1940s Retro Cottage Getaway | Before & After | Etsy

Tina Spangler uprooted herself from her New York City apartment and lifestyle for the woods of upstate New York where she renovated a 1950s cabin into a vintage cottage. She found her home in a forgotten community in Narrowsburg, NY called Luxton Lake. Once a thriving vacation destination for African-American New Yorkers the area was mostly abandoned in the 1970’s when the damn was removed and the lake was drained. Tina found a dilapidated 1950’s cabin in foreclosure and with very little funds, decided to take the leap and fix it up in her favorite vintage style from the 1940s. See her before and after home design and get inspired by her unique retro vintage style!

For the last few years I come back every couple months to watch this. It’s really refreshing to see someone who doesn’t have to have their vintage perfect and always matching in era. ❤️ I love this house.

Beautiful home. My nephew just inherited my grandmother’s 1940’s bungalow home in South Carolina and your home reminds me of the style and decor of the era. Simple, cozy, vintage, functional and elegant.

This is exactly what I plan on doing with my future home I am building. I have also found a bunch of nice modern kitchen things that are vintage styled and I am super excited about building it with my parents help.

lovely, lovely, lovely. it’s so fun to visit people who have a million and one old things… i’m very nostalgic. my grandma had the green fireking dishware, as did my beloved mama. i’d so rather go back to living in the past compared with this world today…

Love your attitude about your home. 🙂

  22. Buds on July 20, 2023 at 1:35 pm

Love the house! One question: does a linoleum rug run the risk of having lead like old linoleum flooring? Really pretty, and would love to get one, but wouldn’t want to risk my pet’s health.

  23. Gretchen Thom on July 20, 2023 at 1:35 pm

    Wonder House! and Wonderful Attitude!

  32. John Valdez on July 20, 2023 at 1:41 pm

I really loved your video. I think it is important to show people examples of how old things can be enjoyed and experienced very positively. Too much of our culture is based on being disposable, citing that it is "too old" or "obsolete" to be used anymore. This is how marketing has tainted our understanding of truly wonderful things in our lives, disrupting many good memories, experiences and cheating future generations out of appreciating the finer things found in a simpler life.

  33. Ms LadyT on July 20, 2023 at 1:42 pm

Dag, they made their homes worthless, took em and sold em for the quirkiness

  39. Jon Aiken on July 20, 2023 at 1:50 pm

I had forgotten about the linseed "rugs"…my grandmother had one in her house, fifty years ago! Thanks for posting, and thanks for the memory.

  40. Bambi West on July 20, 2023 at 1:50 pm

I stumbled across your tour. The 30’s through early 1950’s are my favorite homes and decor. So many people buy these lovely older homes and gut them and turn them into 2020 style homes and it makes me so sad. Wonderful job and thank you for loving your home and not totally remodeling it in. ☺️

  41. Mary Lawson on July 20, 2023 at 1:51 pm

Great job. I have the green cups, etc. but I will be 72 God willing.

  42. Kathleenie Beanie on July 20, 2023 at 1:52 pm

Love your love and care of vintage things and color. We have lost so much style through the growth of the many new renovation shows.

  43. Helenaville on July 20, 2023 at 1:57 pm

I love your point that to be authentic everything doesn’t have to come from the same decade.  People in the 1940s owned items from the 1920’s etc.  Anyway you did a great job, it’s wonderful and with a welcoming ambience.

  44. bg147 on July 20, 2023 at 1:58 pm

At first, I thought it was going to be way over-done but I was pleasantly surprise. Her stuff is earlier than mine, but my 1923 bungalow is all vintage/retro. She has a cute place.
