1950s Dream Kitchen: A Film to Enjoy Together
The Opal Season Co. team has watched hundreds of hours of archival films from the 1940s, 50s and 60s to bring you a selection of curated videos to watch together and spark reminiscing. This lighthearted 1955 film, entitled “A Word to the Wives”, features two friends conspiring to get one a new kitchen – all while marveling at the magic of mid-century appliances.
The “Time & Again” Film Series has been curated for people living with dementia (typically early or mid stage), as a way to enjoy time together with a care partner. Whether you have a diagnosis yourself, are a care partner for a loved one with dementia, or working in long term care, we hope you enjoy this dementia-inclusive reminiscing activity. At less than 15 minutes, this stand-alone story is also ideal for people who find it difficult to follow more complicated or longer plots.
Additional suggestions for after the video is watched:
– do you enjoy planning a housewarming parties? Or would you rather be a guest?
– ice cubes seemed to be a tricky thing to make! Did your fridge automatically make ice cubes, or did you fill a tray? What about “circular” ice cubes?
– for those who enjoy sensory activities, bring cutlery to sort into a cutlery organizer, or a stack of tea towels to fold!
This archival footage is brought to you in association with the Prelinger Archives. The film has been lightly edited for clarity.

That neighbor husband played The Old Man in The Christmas Story movie !
Carl Koshack
George needs to step up his game and buy her that kitchen.
Always with a cigarette in hand just like my dad
The Old Man is the same whether not getting his wife a new kitchen or new furnace.
"besides, my mother’s been quite ill in Cleveland…" Presto! Hon. That dame got that new home when her mother-in-law went 6′ under and she got all the goodies. With a little luck (or a little "help" ) you can have a new house too. Ask any Gen Y or millennial who has gone "orphan." They’re paying 400K for their new home with no skills, no sweat.
wtf are those recipes lol
So simple!
George should have hired Aunt Bea or Hazel.
Lol 😂 apparently men didn’t know how to actually cool in the 50s. Granted considering my father it’s probably true 😂
I subscribed immediately.
Is that the dad from. Christmas Story?
I could have used help like this with my dad years ago. Maybe when my time comes. I’ve already told my daughter about your company.
Alice is a real bragger
That’s the dad from The Christmas Story ❤
Thank you!!!! I have been looking for this particular video.
i adore their fluffy hair ❤️❤️❤️ gosh so cute!!!
"I doubt if George knew how to bring things to a simmer." – I feel like there’s some very not 1955-appropriate shade in that line.
That’s Darren McGavin (aka The Old Man from A Christmas Story) as George! What a kick to see him so young!
The dream kitchen lady even has a more modern (for the time) hairdo, and better clothes even than the poor other lady. So sad.
That’s Marsha Hunt as the wife with the dream kitchen. Darren McGavin, Scott McKay and Janet Riley.
I don’t think there was a kitchen in the 40’s, 50’s or 60’s that DIDN’T have a Sunbeam Mixmaster on the counter top,..and we STILL have our chrome based Osterizer Blender. They built things to last back then. It seemed much simpler back then, but of course those of us who weren’t born yet romanticize this era.
