24X48 Tile Floor Installation (TUTORIAL)

24X48 Tile Floor Installation (TUTORIAL)

Large Format porcelain tiles are becoming popular because of their style and less grout. These 24×48 tiles create a modern, durable, and easy to clean floor surface. Many considerations need to be made when installing 24×48 tiles or other large format tiles. It is necessary to do floor prep before hand which may include; grinding high spots; filling low spots with a patching compound or self leveling underlayment (SLU); and/or crack isolation membrane. It is imperative to start with a flat surface within TCNA recommendations of no deviance greater than 1/4″ in a 10′ span. The proper thinset should be selected, preferably one that is rated for Large Format Tile (LFT) or Large Heavy Tile (LHT). We prefer Custom Building Products Prolite or Laticrete LHT.

Is he tiling right on plywood subfloor? If so I’m kind of surprised. Would have thought he would have used some sort of underlayment or uncoupling membrane.

I have a question. Should I wet my tiles before laying them?, im my case im using porcelain tiles. I am from south east asia, where in our region using adhesive is not a common practice (we just simply apply mortar (portland cement) on the ground and lay the tiles on it).

  3. Gary Petit-Frere on October 5, 2022 at 7:07 am

You only cover 100 square feet of tile per day?

  4. Tony Condor on October 5, 2022 at 7:08 am

I have these exact tiles on my fireplace wall all the way to the ceiling. They’re beautiful

Great video man just did a bathroom floor today first time tiling, 24×48 tiles too. Flat buttered the back of the tiles with no ridges and half inch knotches on the floor but i tell ya man there was no way i was pulling my tile up Iike that after setting it down lmaoo last tile, forgot two leveling clips and man oh man even with suction cups it was a no go for lifting that back up, so guess i got a good bond. Ended up perfect!!

I’d like to know how you gridded out and cut the tile around that jut out wall.

  8. Harry Patel on October 5, 2022 at 7:12 am

    Good job 👍

  9. Lavinia Timofte on October 5, 2022 at 7:12 am

Am I the only one who spotted a cracked tile left in the corner? Just carry on laying? Can tell how much you appreciate your work..

  10. Weston LeClair on October 5, 2022 at 7:13 am

Sooooooo, air won’t get trapped in mortar bed with opposing (perpendicular) trowel directions on substrate and back of tile?

  11. Sailor473 on October 5, 2022 at 7:14 am

How about, instead of leveling the substrate, using thinset over the slab a mortar mix bed, then thinset under the tile? This I believe is the mortar bed method of installation.

Also, is an uncoupling membrane necessary for LFT installations.

    Thank you.

Surprised you didn’t use uncoupling membrane on this would have me shook

QUESTION: can you use a manual tile cutter/snap for 24 by 48" porcelain composite tile, aka compound marmoglass? or it it best to use a wet saw? anyone have any tips, pros or cons?

  16. maximoowastaken on October 5, 2022 at 7:20 am

Can you say how much you charg per sq ft for this job. Awesome video

  17. Spidey on October 5, 2022 at 7:21 am

  18. Scott C. on October 5, 2022 at 7:21 am

Thanks for the info, I never did 24 x 48 tile before and about to do them. It is nice that you throw in the little tips about these larger tiles that you normally wouldn’t think of!

  19. Levan Jgharkava on October 5, 2022 at 7:24 am

You are leaving lot of air pockets by spreading compound in different directions on tile and on floor.

  20. Дмитрий Королев on October 5, 2022 at 7:24 am

    Теперь понял,главное решительность!

  21. J C on October 5, 2022 at 7:24 am

Tile contractors charge wayyyyyy too much to install those 24 x 48 tiles. like really though, you don’t need to check for edges since you use the clips, theyre also not that heavy as youre able to move them around solo. I just don’t get it

  22. propertyservices1 on October 5, 2022 at 7:24 am

So basically every tile Co outside Italy has not Mastered the fine art of cutting tiles square ? Lol.

  23. Junkyard Dawgs on October 5, 2022 at 7:26 am

I want to know how you cut that one tile in front of the one you set that is going around the wall without breaking it!!! Thats what l want to seeeeeeee!!!!

  26. RS RSC on October 5, 2022 at 7:28 am

    You’re just a beginner 👈🏼😅

  27. fartpoobox ohyeah on October 5, 2022 at 7:30 am

You use the flat side of the trowel to "key-in" or "burn-in" the thinset. A nice thin layer (with a lot of pressure) before you trowel a coat on top. At least this is the way I was taught 30 plus years ago.

  28. Natural Born Reeler on October 5, 2022 at 7:31 am

I have a project I am doing andI would like to actually talk to you about.. also I was going to order 2 for drains and see about that rs membrane

  29. Marcos Zúñiga on October 5, 2022 at 7:34 am

Does the direction of the thinset on the tile matter?

  32. cond2008 on October 5, 2022 at 7:36 am

Thank you TileCoach for your very helpful videos. Any chance you know the brand and style of the tiles in this video? thank you so much

  33. Frogmanpipes on October 5, 2022 at 7:37 am

If you or someone could please answer my question. If I choose a larger tile. Should or would I save on the money on the labor? Thank you

  34. andrewhitchen on October 5, 2022 at 7:37 am

Do you "back butter" or do the full 1/2in x 1/2in trowel back spreading of the thinset on tiles if they are 24 x 24? Thanks btw, great video.

  35. Lazzy J on October 5, 2022 at 7:46 am

Hi Tilecoach, great video. how much would you charge pr. square feet laying tiles like these, just work price not the tiles price. thanks

  36. Jasper Martin on October 5, 2022 at 7:47 am

Will that 36000 dewalt cut the 4’ft tiles long way?

  37. G Wynja3 on October 5, 2022 at 7:48 am

Those big tiles are some hard work. You will know you had a days work. A bucket of mud per tile!

  38. Yusuf & I on October 5, 2022 at 7:49 am

How much does that big cost to install? How much by square foot?

  39. MandrewP on October 5, 2022 at 7:49 am

The one thing that worries me on these large tiles is the possibility of them cracking if the sub-floor isn’t perfect. Like if you are moving a heavy appliance on a two wheeled dolly and the floor deflects a little then CRACK! I might use these large tiles on an on grade slab but not on a above grade wooden floor.

  40. L. Scott Music on October 5, 2022 at 7:51 am

Do you think the QEP Lash leveling clips are big/strong enough for this size tile or does this need heavier duty?

  41. Alexander Amato on October 5, 2022 at 7:54 am

What size grout lines (and spacer clip system) do you have on that installation? Is it a 1/16" or 1/8" ?

  42. MAGA MAN on October 5, 2022 at 7:54 am

Those wedge shaped clips tend to push the tiles apart when you tighten them down, at least the ones sold by home depot do. The tool to install them also ruined my hand because it can’t be adjusted to a comfortable width and ended up putting a not of pressure on my thumb joint. I really like the Marshalltown leveling system that screws down. It’s easy to install, no tools needed and if you screw up, it’s easy to undo.

I’ve been following you for a while now. I’ve been a tile setter for 32 years. 15 years in the union and the rest in my own company. All commercial work. I love your passion for the trade. Your a true artist. In my opinion our trade is the most rewarding at the end of The project.

  44. Ian Earnshaw on October 5, 2022 at 7:57 am

Good video thank you, I use leveling clips a lot and so far I’ve been able to tile the whole floor in one day, I have always wondered the procedure of setting the clips and then cleaning of any adhesive until the next day to resume tiling, or is it that simple? Something tells me not!

  45. Manny G on October 5, 2022 at 7:59 am

Can I work for you . I’m 21 and I wanna be part of ur team !!!

  46. Yaima Perez on October 5, 2022 at 7:59 am

Can I fly you down to Florida? LOL but seriously……I just had a terrible shower tile install and stopped job before finishing and didn’t proceed to finishing my floors. 🙄

  47. Abdul Hai on October 5, 2022 at 7:59 am

flat and level are not interchangeable. Does the floor need to be flat or level?

  48. Paul C on October 5, 2022 at 8:01 am

I’m planning a 1600 sq ft job using 12×24 porcelain on a concrete slab. Other than making sure floors are flat and ideally level, do you not worry about expansion joints or coupling membranes/crack isolation? So much varying info out there. Your work looks really good. Would really like to hear your opinion. I’m in Nevada so very dry conditions.
