I’ll be moving into my first studio soon, and your videos are so inspiring. I love having a table to eat at, so I’m thankful for your tips. I also have a small upright piano I inherited that I hope will fit.

Honestly, the number one non-essential item in most studio apartments (except those very few with a highly defined and sectioned off hidden area for it) is a separate bed. Invest in a good quality daybed or sofabed and you won’t feel like a tween having her friends over after school to play Monopoly in your bedroom! (Embarrassing!) It also frees up a surprising amount of floor space, giving you room for a small table and chairs, a storage ottoman that doubles as a coffee table or extra seating, and bookshelves/display shelves! Oh yeah, and a tiny desk, a dogbed, and a big*** dog crate! And a Kallax unit I love. And a sofa/console table and a vintage bar cart. Wow, you can fit a ton of useful items in under 500 sq ft if you don’t waste most of it on a bed.

I don’t see your kitchen in your video 😞

Steffi taught me that it IS possible to have too much storage furniture pieces in a small space! For example, I had two full bookshelves, two nightstands (well, they were just cheap 2-tier open shelves from Lowe’s I sorta used as nightstands haha), another mini shelving unit, and a mini 6-drawer unit (similar to the popular Ikea Alex drawers). Because I live in a studio, I thought an excessive amount of storage shelving was absolutely NECESSARY. Turns out that’s not true at all! I’ve now comfortably downsized from 6 furniture units to just 3 (including just ONE bookshelf from 2 FULL bookshelves), and even found a way to comfortably store all my things in a decorative, uncluttered way! I think that goes right along with the suggestion to axe the dining table, because it’s all about maximizing the small space you have so you have more room to decorate! It’s an absolute game-changer! 🙂

For ergonomic reasons, I’d have to encourage not making a habit of working from the couch. I’ve been a remote worker for over five years, with no problems during the first half. During COVID, in order to change up my scenery throughout the day, I worked everywhere but my desk and ended up messing up my back from neck to shoulder. After a quick but necessary chastising from my PCP who is a DO, I went back to sitting at my desk, with a few adjustments, and making sure to take regular stretch breaks every 30 mins to an hours

Thank you for watching! What do YOU think is unnecessary for a studio apartment? How do you make the most of a small space? Do tell!

  9. Magurite Geist on October 29, 2022 at 8:17 am

I think ALL studio apartments should already have ceiling 🪝 for
    Plants
    Mobiles
    🪁 kites
    Pictures
    Mirror’s
    Macrame
    ETC!!!

I feel like I’m a lonely holdout in that I would rather have a desk and a dining table than a sofa. I just don’t ever have people over and I hate crumbs on my sheets. I feel like finding layouts without a tv and sofa as the focal points is basically impossible…

  11. GradKat on October 29, 2022 at 8:23 am

Dare I add a bar cart to the list? Of course this depends on a person’s lifestyle, but unless you have friends dropping in for drinks on a regular basis, is a specialised cart with a range of drinks really necessary?

I agree with the points you raise, Steffi – although for myself I always have to have some sort of dining table, even if it’s tiny. You’re spot on about coffee tables; my living room is pretty much a corridor between the front door and the kitchen. I have nesting tables, and just get one out if I really need it. Otherwise I prefer to balance drinks on the nice wide arms of my favourite chair!

I also think you make a good point about the dividers; they do suit some studios, depending on size and layout of the apartment, but I think in most places they just limit the space.

One challenge is if you move into a “furnished” studio, as I did. They are common in Paris. I’m working on it, though 🙂 Fortunately, the pieces worked together well. I am able to blend my own furniture in fairly well.

I love my piano bench as a coffee table! Small, has storage, and provides extra seating when needed

I fit everything in my 441 sq ft studio: living room area with coffee table and tv stand, bedroom area with queen size bed, art studio area, reading nook area, dining area with dining table…all in the main space. Then there’s a separate kitchen and bathroom

  23. Thera Webster on October 29, 2022 at 8:43 am

I don’t even watch TV. I craft, do food prep, and do all my paperwork at the kitchen table as it’s next to my kitchen alcove. Here’s the problem- l am disabled and have to have an oxygen concentrator and CPAP by my bed. I have a two drawer dresser at the end of the bed, a rocker, and my book shelf next to the entrance to the dressing room and bathroom. My art stuff, cleaning supplies, and extra towels are in a cabinet tucked in to the dressing room. I wish l could include pictures because l’m getting frustrated with my setup. Most people come over and hang out at the table. I’m trying to reconfigure but l need a lot of help, and there is nobody.. lbvs

I just threw out my 4-seat dining table, switching it for a 2-seat (4 seat possible) fold out table. I have a beautiful green vintage sewing machine and a big screen stationary computer and also need space for doing crafts. Solved it by using IKEA Kallax shelves as storage and “legs” and put a 4 meter countertop over it. IMy TV hangs at the back (I use wallpaper for cover up) of another tall IKEA Kallax wish I also use as a divider between bed and kitchen area. I watch TV from bed case I don’t have space for a coach.

  27. Kate Cogsworthy on October 29, 2022 at 8:47 am

I have a 2BR, but the great room was such a weird space that I decided to get rid of my dining table and either eat on the coffee table (which has a pop-up top) or at the kitchen bar.

  28. Joy on October 29, 2022 at 8:54 am

As an artist with a tablet setup etc. I do need a desk. Same goes for my programming hobbies! But other than that this was really really helpful! Thank you so much <3

Interesting! In my tiny flat, I have an octagon travertine table which is the centerpiece of my apartment. It is the focal point and everything is styled around it. It hosts dinner parties at night, Sunday brunches with friends and is my workspace during the day. Actually during the first covid lockdown is when I invested in a sturdy large table because I couldn’t work all day from home without it. Single best investment. 100 agree about the coffee tables. Instead I have small side tables I can move around as needed. I live in 40 square meters / 430 square feet.
