You are to blame, for me taking a master’s in Interior Design! 😀 This is true! I still go here and get some great pro tips from you, Lisa, Thank you. Without my blackout drapes in my bedroom, I would never sleep!!I have one table lamp next to my bed, lights in the ceiling and a light over the bed. Lights I have!! I love the look of the black pendant wall lights but am I the only person who hates to see those black cords dangling down the white wall from those lovely black wall lights? I use dressers like nigh stands AND to hold more; my sheets, clothing, etc. I have a nice black chalk painted chair in the corner ( and a black metal bed with open sightlines) but I have never sat in my chair!! I am talking your advice and shopping for a large area rug after my new laminate floor comes in.

  19. C S on May 20, 2022 at 7:59 pm

Great tips. We’re building a small house and I’m taking notes. One fortunate thing is that it’s in the mountains, so we do have big windows with woods all around – nature taken care of!

Need 12×12 foot the concept is very hard. Maybe my walls might be 14 feet so tinny we move from our dream house to a really smaller one.

    *RECAP*

    Tips for DREAM BEDROOM…

    1. Color matters: i.e. the recessive (read: cooler side of the spectrum that appears to move back into the space) tones of blue, green, or light neutrals (ivories, creams, linen colors) that create a lovely envelope of calm, quiet, peacefulness.

PRO TRIP: *Never* paint bedrooms bright hot orange or brilliant red

    2. Lighting also matters: Be able to control the lighting at a) the windows and b) where you have placed lighting. c) blackout drapery may be necessary to keep light out if you need to sleep during the day. (my tip: or if there is exterior lighting that comes into the room) d) be sure you have 3 points of light: in the center of your room, on either side of the bed, and some kind of task light. NOTE: All of these sources must be dimmable either at the wall or on the light source themselves. If you require a fan, make it low profile with a center light and aesthetically appealing.

    3. Become a storage ninja (watch the video for this topic is very specific to your needs and the size of your bedroom) in a designer way.

    4. Handle the "must have" furnishings (i.e. the bed and a little sitting spot that is NOT the bed), plus a statement headboard that is appropriate for the size of the room and provide walking space on each side of the bed. If you don’t have the floor plate for that, a daybed is your best option. Designer "don’t": never shove a bed against the wall, even if you live in a studio.

    5. Rugs: If you don’t have wall to wall carpet, make your area rug as large as you can make it.

    6. Nature is calming and peaceful. If you don’t have a gorgeous view of nature from your bedroom window, include a floor or hanging plant or even fresh cut flowers.

  47. Han Tran on May 20, 2022 at 8:40 pm

Hi Lisa, Thanks so much for your informative and helpful videos! However, one point that I respectfully disagree with is having plants in a small bedroom. As we know, during the night, plants consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide, which may be detrimental if you sleep in a closed, small bedroom with lots of plants around you. I love plants too thanks to their positive energy, but I do not believe that plants belong to a bedroom. I think if we want that aesthetic look that plants give, we should opt for fake plants in a small, enclosed space.
