This sweet 145-square-foot kitchen in Piedmont, California, “is meant to be on the humble side,” says architect Robert Kelly. “Ninety-five percent of us live in small kitchens, and this kitchen has everything we need and want. Almost all magazine kitchens are large kitchens, but they really aren’t what most of us have room for or need.” Here’s how Robert and his wife Ronna got their kitchen remodel right.

Glad they kept the breakfast room, that’s a very sweet space.

What a lovely family and love their space, esp. how it fits in with the rest of the house.

Love the tall cabinets, the simple clock on the wall and I just love seeing families.

Nice job keeping it looking vintage. The only thing I would have done differently was put some stainless steel somewhere, like the stove and refrigerator. Stainless is a wonderful juxtaposition to vintage.

Really like this kitchen. But also have always liked 1920’s homes.

Lovely renovation, very well done. I for one would never be able to live in the past. It’s nice to look at, but I want full modernity in my kitchen.

Love mixing new with the old and leaving the architectural details and character of the home. Reminds me of the Garden District homes. Being conservative and making it classy and functional. Love it!

Oh, l really love your kitchen and the way you kept it simple and in style with the rest of your home! I’m so glad you kept the “Tin Can” repair patch! The Butler’s Pantry with the skylight!

I love that they left the vintage charm of the home intact! I scream inside when I see old houses gutted and modernized, with none of it’s original beauty left behind.

Reminds me so much of my grandmother’s home in Long Beach CA. Good job.

Love this kitchen and the fact that the character of the home was important to the homeowners. It’s a charming space with arches. Glad they didn’t destroy the character by knocking out the walls. The stove and windows were great finds. Glad they kept the tin can floor patch.

  27. Cooky Smith on October 21, 2022 at 5:20 am

Love this kitchen much more than the modern gigantic ones. Practical, functional, tons of light! Very good taste.

    I love old cabinets.

  29. Mark Austin on October 21, 2022 at 5:24 am

Really nicely done! Perfect blending of old and new. Finally people that understand that the refrigerator shouldn’t stick a foot into the room. Bravo!

Thank you for not doing open concept or greatly enlarging the footprint. Love the stove, the hidden microwave, and of course the can in the floor. 👍👌👏

This kitchen is so unique and quaint and yet incredibly functional. What a lovely home! 💕

  35. adiiiida on October 21, 2022 at 5:32 am

Love this! I really love the idea of preserving the original character and respecting the original architecture of a home! You see so much of the generic open-concept-kinda renovations where people just rip all the walls and also the good vibes out of their homes! Open-concept is also not very practical since it eliminates privacy and all other possibilities of having cozy nooks and archways and all of the different moments you can experience within an older house! People just end up living in square boxes that aren’t particularly interesting or homey. The popular trend of opening it all up for the sake of entertaining overlooks the fact that people actually spend the majority of their time at home just living by themselves/with their closest family.
I love how this reno turned out! Especially love the butlers pantry with that amazing skylight-moment <3 This kitchen is perfect! All the simple, yet traditional detailing surrounding the hood and cabinets and the high ceilings and crown moldings and that door leading to a green garden directly from the kitchen! Perfection! 🙂

  46. Judith Neeley on October 21, 2022 at 5:42 am

I love everything about this. I bet the rest of the house has character, too.

    Iove this kitchen❣

  48. The Deco Cottage on October 21, 2022 at 5:42 am

THIS! This is how you do a “modern” kitchen in an old house. They’ve done a great job of maintaining the charm and character of the original house while making the kitchen modern and functional for a young family. It’s great to see thoughtful and intentional renovations in old houses.

We’re about to start a kitchen renovation and hope to do the same thing to our 1928 Tudor Revival cottage. We’re putting in all new cabinetry and floors in the space but sticking to classic finishes and shaker doors that nod to the 1920’s.
