Full-Time Van Life: Establishing Residency and Getting Mail

Welcome to Module 3 / Lesson 6 of the Van Life Roadmap. One of the most common questions people have before embarking on full time van life is where to establish residency. If you are living full-time in your van, is there an advantage of choosing one state over the other as your home state? And how do you get mail? In this lesson, we cover:

• Using the address of a friend of family as your residence
• Establishing a residency in a new state and the most popular states full time van lifers choose
• Receiving packages on the road
• Mail forwarding services
• Paying bills as a van lifer

Florida isn’t bad on vehicle registrations cost and no safety or emission inspections. When I moved out of Florida after 20+ years there a registration renewal was $38.00 and here in my home state it was $101.00, I’m sure Florida has gone up a bit but Illinois has went up to around $200 for newer vehicles and $150 for older ones, Illinois has state income tax also where Florida doesn’t. Love your rv/ van, it’s very nice.
