How to Create a Stunning Focal Wall for Your Living Room | Julie Khuu
How to Create a Stunning Focal Wall for Your Living Room | Julie Khuu
Today we will be talking about the ONE thing that I feel every room needs- a focal point. A focal wall or focal point is simply a statement-making element that brings balance to a room. In the bedroom, it’s the bed. In the dining room, it’s usually the dining table, chairs, and a beautiful light fixture above the table. But what about the living room? There are so many elements to a living space that can become the focal point, that it may not be immediately obvious which walls to prioritize.
If you have ever wondered what to do with all that blank space on your living room walls, this video is for you!

Thanks so much for sharing these videos. Should a focal wall be the one we look at when walking into a room, or can it be off to the side?
IM MOVING INTO A RETIREMENT 1 BEDROOM 500SQ FT OPEN CONCEPT APARTMENT. LG PATIO WINDOW LOOKING OUT ON A GREEN PARK. HOW DO I MAKE THAT A FOCAL POINT? I HAVE A cherry wood fireplace and want to put my TV 55" on top . My orange twins size hide a bed across fireplace. I have an antique desk . No table in middle Also have a grey LAZY BOY lounge chair. THIS A RENTAL PROPERTY so I am limited and all walls are white. I am 85 and have only myself to make a nice place to live in.
WOULD YOU CONSIDER SHOWING RETIREES IN SMALL APARTMENTS WHAT CAN BE DONE? HOPE TO GET SOME IDEAS BEFORE I MOVE 5 OCTOBER. THANKS AND I LOVE YOUR CHANEL.
Your videos are so wonderful Julie!! My wife keeps wondering where i get all of these good design ideas from
I only have 2 walls I can put a gallery wall…over my fireplace and where my bed is. Over my fireplace is impossible to use nails to hang
Excellent video! Thank you!
My focal point in my longer than wide living room in open floor plan (living, dining, kitchen) happens to be a large floor to ceiling corner/diagonal faux stone fireplace/wood burning stove with no room on either side. It takes up a lot of room. Last time burned wood in it three winters ago. It’s hot. I don’t like it but my husband refuses to do anything with it and won’t allow me to. There’s no room to center furniture around it either. It’s a problem space no matter how you look at it 😢😢😢
Hi Julie. This is very informative and probably one of your best videos
What if your bedroom is also your office? :/
Wow amazing show. I wish everyone get to watch the greatest tutorials. 🙏🙏🙏
Very informative…i do learn a lot…i love interior designing…thanks so much.
Thank you Julie for showering us with your knowledge and supplement with so many great examples. Yes I agree I have an stunning internet Professor teaching me all about interior design. Side note…the background music is gives a modern vibe but also a little creepy…I was like… is there someone laughing or giggling?? Where does it come from?
Julie, thank you for introducing me here to some interesting designers: Patina Farm, Janie Molster, Simon Upton, Jessie McLaughlin. Very exciting for this newbie to interior design!
I felt very encouraged to see examples of assymetry in some of your focal wall examples. I have been so frustrated with the way my doorways and my central ceiling lights are off-centre with regard to my windows and hallway/room openings. It has really bothered me that i cant get a symmetrical layout for so many of my walls, and I was worried that accentuating the assymetry would just look weird. Now i can see that it can work! i do hope you would consider doing a whole video on where to start to build an asymmetrical interior which looks balanced and intentional in the end, instead of looking like nothing is quite the right size, even when it is.
hi julie, been following and watching all your tips, i have a tiny house with narrow living room. please help me design it in a minimal way. and how to create a focal wall using wallpaper as well as the sloped ceiling using the wall paper?
How to make a focal point in a room where one wall has big fireplace, another opposite wall huge window and it walk through room so 2 remaining wall has openings???
This is really a good video. I’d love to ask that in hot places, people don’t have a fire place so in those types of situations, people create focal points on both behind the Sofa Wall and the TV wall. What’s your opinion on that and what’s your advice on having two types of feature walls?
💗💗💗💗
Do you have a video for large wall in staircase…especially one that is part of the living room. Would you recommend panelling?
Good video but I hate the suggestion about shelving your books by color. When I see a room like that I instantly assume that the owners are not readers, perhaps illiterate, who have bought their books (which are unread) by the yard. I assume they’re posers and I mentally lower their IQs by several points. Not everyone is a reader and that’s fine, but don’t display books you haven’t read! When a guest tries to initiate a conversation about one of the books your ignorance will be revealed and you will look and feel like an idiot.
So much good information in this video and I was hoping to see a space shaped like mine to give me a clue on what to do. My living room is shaped crazy. No fireplace, no space for tv, choppy wall space. 3 unproportionate windows and a powder room right next to one of the windows. I don’t know what the architectures of this space had in mind. It is beautiful empty but its so choppy and now that I have to decorate it is frustrating. And don’t get me started on the supposedly dining area that has the set up for a tv where I would no doubt want to put artwork or a couple of mirrors. Ugh! I may have to get a local designer to come in to give me some advice.
Julie, you are a gift of God.
I am in love with your channel! Thank you!❤️
I need help. All this looks so beautiful.
Can you please teach me how to decorate a small humble leaving room without fire place i just have a terrase door & window because i leave in a small appartment. Sending love from switzerland❣
Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. They are so helpful. I now know what not to do.
I really do have to say this. It’s very difficult to find interior designers who address the “real life” usage for spaces and homes. But Julie, I’m all the way in Nigeria and I use your tips consistently!! That’s a testament to how amazing you are!
This focal point/wall video is full of great ideas! Thanks!
This video is a big help for me on what to do with the empty wall in my house. Thank you Julie 👍
Well explained. Thanks 💐
Nice
I have a cherry dining table, buffet and wall table. I want to bring in shelving for the end wall. Would glass and chrome work? I have a crystal chandelier and gold frame mirror over the buffet.
Can you help me with my 1960’s upstairs bungalow bedroom?! It’s a very typical Michigan style of home and the upstairs is just such a weird space to make flow! I have a king size bed and really just want to design around that! My home is 1000 square ft so its … just … AWKWARD!
An excellent video, great presentation, the contents – as if you have written for your book waiting to be published! 🙂
Julie, love your videos. You should add details of your outfits also:)) very nice style!
Wait…is this a shirt and blazer or a shirt with two poka dot patterns. Whatever it is I love it. 💘.
The colors, the contrast…L.O.V.E. IT
Lots of ideas on gallery walls.
Thank you so much, Julie.
Can you do a design office
Have you done any videos on incorporating a giant (75") flat screen tv on the focal wall? I live in a two bedroom condo and the open concept living area is the chosen place for my husbands TV.
I’m wondering about the group of 9 pictures that were right up against each other without spaces between the pictures. Is that okay? I really liked it, but I always thought that there had to be, for example, 2 inches between all the pictures.
Great info. I am in a dilemma on which shape of lampshade to go in my livingroom corner, accent wall. Have you done a video on lanpshades before?
Thank you Julie for sharing your impressive knowledge. I’m confused though, with contrasting colors in design versus monochrome:
My hard wood floors (from 1915 not 90’s) are much yellow/orange and i’m repainting the whole house with very light pastel colors (very light turquoise in living room)
I thought i should pick a light honey leather for upholstering the chesterfield sofa, to match the floor… Now i wonder if i should do the opposite!? 😰
Also, i thought a gold chandelier would contrast with the wall color, but match the sofa and floor… So so confusing…
Floors need to be sanded, but i wasn’t planning to color them darker. (The winter here is much too long and dark!)
Julie thank you for these videos! I’m really looking forward to a video that addresses “having a fab living room that also doubles as your children’s play area and media room”. That would be so useful!!!! ❤️❤️❤️🌻🌻
You’re amazing Julie, thank you so much for this content! I have an open room between my kitchen and living room – one wall contains the bathroom, one wall is the opening, another wall contains a changing table and rocking chair. The largest wall has a side table and basket for my yoga things as I also use this space to practice. I am thinking about a DIT gallery wall for the large wall. Currently, I have a piece of art above the changing table/rocking chair. I know it’s difficult to imagine, but I am having trouble figuring out what to do with the space as the location is so strange as well as using it for baby things and yoga! Please help if you can 🙏
Hi Julie, If your television is on your TV stand, can you put a large picture/painting above it? What are the parameters regarding how big the picture should be? I am afraid that if its so high above the TV it would look bad. It’s not a long picture, but a big one that should probably have wall space all on its own. Are there rules regarding how big the picture is supposed to be over the tv set? Thank you.
Yes to a wallpaper video. I am looking for scenic wallpaper for a new powder room. The choices are overwhelming.
Hi Julie! I was wondering if you knew any information for the rug in the gorgeous room featured at 10:28? I’ve spent over an hour hunting for it to no avail!
I hope that I could afford your service to help make my humble place beautiful , I love simplicity and beauty at the same time
Thank you so much 🙏🤗🌹
Isn’t hierarchy a white male thing? Ha, ha, just kidding. I saw an opportunity for a stupid woke joke. I’ll see myself out now. 😆
Hi Julie, do you have a video clip of carpet under the coffee table?
Awesome video as always you are truly amazing at what you doing I think I speak for everyone when we say we love and appreciate everything you do and all the wonderful information you give all of us
So I have a question on a different topic but you have given me so many wonderful tips and pointers to beautify my home
Recently I had my entire home except for the kitchen laundry room and downstairs bathroom installed brand new plush white carpet it is beautiful comfortable on your feet but very white and I was thinking about layering some oriental style area rugs do you give me a splash of color and also protects the white carpeting a little bit in the entryway I thought about putting a 4 x 6 black and gold oriental area rug so that people can come in and sit down on the bench and takeoff their shoes and I was thinking if I did that I should probably do a matching oriental area rug in the foyer and also in the living room and dining room one could be under the dining room table I ordered a table 90 inches which you recommended to me before. So for the living room I ordered two large white leather sofas Andy chair as well to form a nice seating area on one side of the living room and I also have a marble and brass coffee table and end tables I’m curious if a area rug even though there’s already white wall-to-wall carpeting would be appropriate or if it would be too much I installed gold is a Roski Crystal chandeliers in the living room dining room and flush mounts throughout the stairway and entryway and hallways but all the lighting fixtures are gold and crystals and the wood trim on the walls are black in the walls itself in the ceilings are all extremely white with a semi gloss and then of course the white wall-to-wall carpeting so I’m wondering if layering the area oriental rugs on there is a good idea or if it is just going to make the room look too busy and maybe the white wall-to-wall carpeting is enough but if it is a good plan to do in the area rugs layered on top of the wall-to-wall carpeting do you think the black and gold would look nice and if so would you have any recommendations for a black and gold or white and gold or something with those colors in it and it was silk oriental my living room is 17 x 14 in my dining room is 14 x 12 I have been looking and it has been very difficult to find any really nice war black and gold oriental or white and gold. Thank you so much look forward to hearing all your wonderful ideas you have already helped me make our home beautiful Hope you enjoy your weekend be safe God bless
