How to Decorate Japandi

How to Decorate Japandi

In this video, I continue my series of the most popular interior design styles with Japandi! Japandi is a very popular interior design style in 2021 because of it’s calm simplicity. It is a beautiful blend of Japanese Wabi Sabi and Scandinavian Hygge, perfectly matched with simple, modern furniture and a neutral palette. This style to me feels fresh, contemporary, personal, calming and serene.

I give you a breakdown of the overlap between Scandinavian design and Japanese Zen to create Japandi, and I explain the benefits of this design style, tips on how you can achieve this look in your own home, and my favourites Japandi places to shop!

Could you do a video like this for art deco? These style breakdowns are seriously so helpful!

    I think I’m more of a partial MidCentury Japandi…
I love the design shapes of mid century furniture pieces with warm woods, the clean bright Scandinavian touch in a simply tasteful Japanese space.

  9. ConstantCompanion on June 10, 2022 at 9:32 pm

I think this is one of my favorite videos of yours. Your examples are very attractive. I’m not a fan of scandia. Only cuz it kind of looks like a stick furniture to me. I love the lines and the simplicity when you combine the two.

  10. Gail Remp on June 10, 2022 at 9:33 pm

I’d like to call what I’ve always done as the style. I called it just finding something that worked it looked pretty good with everything else. Oh my god what now style of decorating. Good now they have a name for it

I am taking an interior design course and I was feeling a lack of inspiration today. I watched this and it definitely ignited my spark again! I am really looking forward to learning more about Japandi. Thanks for the cohesive intro, Nick!

I’m planning a renovation and am definitely going to base it in Japandi design. Question – any good japandi concepts for designing stairs? Visual reference would be helpful. 🙏

    U didn’t mention artwork

  18. J G on June 10, 2022 at 9:47 pm

Thank you again Nick. We will be moving into our first home in a few months and have found your videos so helpful. Muji weirds me out too until I found out about their philosophy online (so may be wrong). Apparently it means ‘no brands’, so just a collection of stuff from different sources that people can buy and know it’s good quality and ready off the shelf.

Also if mixing japandi and art deco, how to apply the 80 20 rule please coz that’s 3 styles in one! 🤔

  19. Imani Morrah on June 10, 2022 at 9:47 pm

This is my ideal style. Im obsessed with Japandi

  21. Stella K. on June 10, 2022 at 9:47 pm

That is so interesting. I do not follow styles really I just follow my emotions. I remember as a child I loved mid century and imperfect things. At that time, 80’, that was considered outdated and not good enough. I would find something, mend or make something and it would never be perfect as expected in that time. I was a child so even though I loved imperfect things, I always got frustrated that I myself was not able to achieve that with my own hands. Now looking back, I wish I kept some of the grandmas old furniture that was so calming

I appreciate your nod to the cultural elements of both design styles! Also really love how you include websites to buy items for each style and how organized all your videos are (both within the video and the playlists). Thanks for all the work you’re putting in! It makes me excited to design my space

I fell in LOVE with this style as soon as I watched this video. Please advise on favored furniture retailers for purchase of the Japandi style for bedroom?

I love japan and japandi style but I also love boho style – that is a huge contradiction. Now I am planning to build my new house and i feel tored in between 😀 Any suggestions if there is possibility how to corporate it would be much appreciated 🙂

if there is such thing called Japandi, is there Indiaindustrialism? Or Orientaleclectism?

I’m curious to know what you think about Nitori furniture (it’s a brand from Japan). Would you consider most of their furniture in the Japandi style?

Hot tip: find a nice branch and put it on your wall (it’s my favorite thing in the house). Go find your stuff in nature, not only shops.

  35. Valery Diane on June 10, 2022 at 10:05 pm

Does exists a boho japandi? 🤣 I mean a not-cluttered and minimalist eclectic style with pieces of furniture that come from around the world, with mostly natural wood tones and some pops of rich colors. Does it have a name? Is it possible? 🤣

  36. st F on June 10, 2022 at 10:06 pm

  37. st F on June 10, 2022 at 10:07 pm

Is it ok to use colorful lithographies with gold frames 🖼 along with Japandi furnitures/furnishings?

  38. B Td on June 10, 2022 at 10:07 pm

The traditional Scandinavian style used dark wood, such as teak and rosewood. Many wood used in Japan are light in colour to begin with, but the wood darkens as they age. Lighter wood trend we recognise ‘Scandinavian’ today only started around the 90s.
Also, the pictures at the beginning of the video looks more like Southeast Asia, like Thailand. We don’t have Budda in our homes and we don’t grow trees in the middle of the room… Oy.

  39. This_one_simple_trick on June 10, 2022 at 10:08 pm

All these beautiful pictures of Japandi rooms, where do people just chill and watch tv? Do they just meditate instead?

  40. Brent Byrne on June 10, 2022 at 10:09 pm

Muji (from Mujirushi which means no unlabeled or unmarked) are all over the place here in Japan and they’re not only great for simple Japanese style goods, but also for smart storage solutions because space of course is at a premium in Japan.

  43. n4b1k1 on June 10, 2022 at 10:12 pm

This is absolutely my style. I’m Japanese/American and I like the simple, modern look, but also the Japanese look of my heritage. Without knowing the name of this, I had already started planning this design for my new house. I hope to move in by the end of the year.

  44. Paola Medel on June 10, 2022 at 10:13 pm

Hey Nick! Huge fan here, I love your style. Question- I just bought a Colonial style (exterior) home. I’m very much a modern minimalist, but in this housing market, beggers can’t be choosers. I do want to steer toward a warmer style, do you think that Japandi interiors would seem mismatched to the exterior of the home?

  45. christine on June 10, 2022 at 10:13 pm

Loving this video! Can you do a video comparing different LV bags? 😀 I been struggling to decide which luxury bag to get. I am currently shopping xrepbag.com which offers you so many choices !!

I’m glad I watched this video because I was surprised to find out this might be my style! I’m a knitter so I’m all about natural materials and supporting local artists. I also picked out a kitchen table and chairs that I like for my future home and they look VERY similar to the examples shown in this video.

  48. the proust effect on June 10, 2022 at 10:17 pm

My style is somewhere between Japandi and "old, rustic cottage minimalism." I like the modern, sleek look, but also want the character, slight imperfection, warmth, and craftsmanship of some older pieces.

It gets even weirder with Muji; not only do they sell homewares and clothing, but they also sell skincare.
