I’ve been a white-wall girl ever since I was a teenager, after I had the bright idea of painting my whole bedroom dark purple (walls and ceilings) while not having any accent lights, just one powerful white led bulb in the centre of my room, which I wore uncovered (no light fixture, just the plain bulb screwed to the ceiling). It gave me frequent migraines. Maybe it’s time to let go of the post traumatic white wall syndrome and invest in some interesting colors now that I know better.

Mirrors. I live in Oahu and almost every house has the mirrored sliding closet doors. I wish they didn’t πŸ˜₯ I’m assuming the purpose it to make small house look bigger but talk about overdoing the look πŸ‘€

Some people put too many small/ditsy little furniture pieces in small spaces. Looks cluttered. Too many "occasional tables," curio cabinets etc. Nothing wrong with a larger cohesive unit for storage and surface area. I think it makes the space look cleaner and larger, though it seems counter-intuitive.

In fengshui, mirrors can be a double edged sword that needs to be strategically placed.
I’m not firm believer of fengshui but it’s got some pretty fair points on this. For example you shouldn’t place a mirror that reflects your whole bed, because when you wake up at night the reflection might startle you. Same for mirrors that flashes at you from the front when you open the entrance door. Two mirrors facing each other is a big no no too for the same reason you mentioned.
I for example don’t like rooms with too many mirrors in it. I think the rule of thumb would be don’t put where it’ll make you feel uneasy or surprise you when you walk into a room.

  9. OnceUponAVideo on January 17, 2023 at 4:43 am

I live in a sub 500 studio (with 2 cats). My biggest tip is to remember vertical space. I have a pretty big bookshelf unit (in beautiful mango wood) that goes within a foot of my ceiling. Not only do my cats love perching on it, but it also takes the place of smaller shelves that just ate up a lot of floor space and didn’t provide any visual interest. I have the matching drop leaf table that can be my desk or opens up to seat 6 for dinner.

If I had a penny for every time my mother has told me that "painting the walls a dark colour will make the room look small!" I could have bought my own damn house and painted the whole thing black. I’m not taking interior design advice from the women who designed our bathroom.

agree with your suggestions, but it’s difficult to see putting theory to practice with the photos you use.. Even though your suggestions are for small spaces, the photos you use are all of large rooms.

  18. MK on January 17, 2023 at 4:47 am

This video is a bit deceiving because you don’t show a β€œsmall” space like a 400/500 SQF size apartment.

We painted our bedroom this really rich dark purple and it looks so beautiful. I’ll always have a dark bedroom now. πŸ’œ

  21. DeadDancers on January 17, 2023 at 4:49 am

I have been trying to work out how to handle a small bedroom in a small apartment – and white walls have seemed so harsh, like I’m in a prison cell.

I think I’m going to be brave and try a dark room. If I go charcoal/black walls though… should the ceiling be black too? What about the (three, though I’m thinking of replacing the WIR with a curtain) doors? Keep them white? Hmm.

I painted my small library (that’s what we call it – it is a second bedroom) dark like Hale Navy and I LOVE it! I painted all the trim and accent wall too. It looks awesome! The room is fairly dark anyway so even if I painted it white it would still be somewhat dark – so I went for moody!

I’m disappointed you didn’t show any small spaces or give us ideas on furniture or furniture placement. I have a small Livingroom and need to buy new furniture so this would have been the perfect video for me. I have been watching you for ideas.

Thanks–after 30 years, I finally figured out where to put my 3×5 wool rug. (In the hallway–it’s too small for everywhere else.)

  30. thegazette on January 17, 2023 at 5:04 am

Can’t believe you left out store up. Small spaces tend to have higher ceilings, get high book sieves, loft your bed, and get everything off the standing line of sight. It makes the spaces feel more open, because we all know that small spaces have to do double or triple duty in that space, so store things higher.

  31. Silly Jellyfish on January 17, 2023 at 5:04 am

I can’t recommend mirrors enough. In my old tiny 1 room appartment with kitchen/living space and room just big enough for a massive wall to wall floor to ceiling roll door, table, and bed, the thing looked SO MUCH BIGGER and spacier when i switched 2 central roll doors for mirror panel ones. It provided tons of space for hiding everything in so the place could pass as minimalistic and have zero clutter yet at the same time the light from the window bounced around twice for extra effect. Combine that with a glam ceiling platform light with tons of sparkle and the room looked great. Simple and small, yes, but full of light and air

Hi Nick, I’m a new subscriber, so forgive me if you’ve already covered this, but can you do a video on lighting, specifically, the difference between ambient, task and accent lighting? I’m pretty sure I get what task lighting is, but ambient and accent lighting kind of sound like the same thing. I’m decorating my small house (which hasn’t really been updated much since we bought it 33 years ago!) and could really use some help with this. Love your channel, thanks!

Your examples/photos are really or small places. Some of those β€˜rooms’ themselves are probably about 500 sq ft. No real help (visually) to address small spaces.

  35. ana rup on January 17, 2023 at 5:09 am

Storage space has been the biggest challenge for me in my small apartment. I have to make sacrifices on what I buy/keep in the house so I can have some empty spaces

  36. marie on January 17, 2023 at 5:12 am

We need more videos on this topic, Nick. As a European living in a tiny European apartment, I find these decor tips really useful. Thank you.

  37. James on January 17, 2023 at 5:13 am

One way to think about the light vs dark small space is that while light can "open a space up", dark can make the space appear deeper/more "unknown" as if there is more to the room than there is – almost making it feel bigger.

  46. Pavel Adamek on January 17, 2023 at 5:26 am

I think it is pefectly fine to embrace the fact that your space is "small", there is no reason for fake-y measures to make it "bigger". Not for you, you are not lying to yourself after a week living there, not to your guests, who do not give a crap. So yes, screw white.

  47. FreeForLife on January 17, 2023 at 5:29 am

I just have too much stuff for the space I can afford. My bedroom only has a small closet that is filled with boxes of things like Christmas decorations, etc., so I had to create storage with plastic shelving units in the bedroom, but I now feel like I’m living in a storage space with a bed in it. I still have a storage unit, because I can’t fit all my stuff in here, and I’m a little sick of feeling squashed into this space. I’m seriously thinking of getting a roommate so I can rent a 3 br place and really stretch out.
