Fellow Scorpio-no wonder I like your channel so much. It helps me a lot to think of your primary vs secondary tip. It’s new to me. Thank-you, Garrett!

I prefer completely clear counter-tops. Easy to use when needed, easy to clean, smooth & clean lines when no longer in use. It just gives me a peaceful feeling when I enter my kitchen and everything is shiny-clean and cleared.

The lighting idea was worth watching this video. I’m doing it!

  4. Alesia Osborne on September 18, 2022 at 3:02 am

I’m a scorpion too. I don’t like how it looks to have anything on top of upper cabinets.

  5. storm wright on September 18, 2022 at 3:02 am

I would go for ceiling cabinets, but I’m 5’2 so no. If you’re able to renovate and have the budget, a cabinet soffit or drop ceiling is also a good option to research if you want the space to be closed and minimal. It’s a great place for ductwork and if it juts out, also a good place for recessed lighting.

How did I miss this video! I have 12ft ceilings and I have been wondering what to do atop my cabinets that makes sense and won’t attract lots of dust. I think it’s gonna be uplighting for me. Thanks.

PS, I loathe sweet tea. And I was born in the South….

I have a rug I can move around to where I will be standing for a long time. It is fabric, not rubber (on to). I also have a small one for my nearly-20-year old cat whose legs now slide out behind her if she stands directly on tile while she eats in the kitchen. She seems to enjoy that.

Agree with the over the upper cabinet suggestions. With my vaulted ceiling, I store attractive vases up there – and 90% of the time when I use said vases, they’re on the dining table. So… kitchen-relevant!

You have actually helped me solve a HUGE issue I have – the dreaded oak cabinets that don’t go to the ceiling. I refuse to paint them because I love wood, live in what many would call a cabin and it just wouldn’t ‘go’ with the structure and ‘flow’ of the rest of the house. Real pine walls, vaulted ceiling with a big wood beam etc. The kitchen is open to the living and dining space but 2 of the 3 walls are white, which I can’t stand. I have been contemplating extending the cabinets up to the ceiling, but know for sure it just won’t look cohesive, the wall above the stove being vaulted to boot, especially on a budget. I have a wonderful collection of antique tea pots and kitchen ware IN BOXES stored away not knowing where to put them. Now I know. I want to enjoy them. So, a new warm neutral on the walls, some good oil and wax restoring of the cabinets, some dimmable lighting and my antiques, and I think I will love it instead of hate the ‘stuff’ that gets put up there. Maybe a 1" plate rail along the top edge for safety. I also have some beautiful chargers and antique plates – now I am excited about tackling that space rather than dreading it! Sincerely, Thank you.

Can you give me an idea for hanging lighting over island and on over breakfast table? Should they match? would love lighting that is rather formal, elegant, sophisticated ( chandelier!) But chandelier is impossible to keep clean in the kitchen

I just bought a home with that space. I’m going to have it built-in with additional cabinets. It just looks un-done

  13. Ooweee Ooweee on September 18, 2022 at 3:13 am

I am allergic to just about everything and did not even consider the amount of dust or whatever that can be collecting over these kitchen cabinets! Made a note to myself!

  14. Steph RossBrown on September 18, 2022 at 3:15 am

I’m crying over the sweet tea commentary 😂

  15. Poseidon Adventure on September 18, 2022 at 3:17 am

Garrett, you are so right about cabinets going to the ceiling. I hate the dust-collecting space when they do not. I had renovated my kitchen a few years ago and right to the ceiling with a gorgeous crown they went. I love the look. Unfortunately, I’m selling my home and my kitchen in the new home cannot have cabinets to the ceiling, since my ceiling is too high. But you’ve given me some ideas of what to place up there. I have some giant-sized platters and some pitchers that might work for me, and if I need to use them , I can still climb a ladder to get them down.
Love your home decor, love your ideas, love your love for silver and dishes (am I the only one who appreciates fine China? No one wants to use them anymore. People tell me to use paper plates when I have company. Umm, no!) I love turning a house into a home. Thanks for your excellent videos and advice. ❤️ 🏡

Really love the way you address real issues in most folks spaces. It would be great to have an unlimited budget but most of us have to save up to "fix" the builder shortcuts like not having the cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling. I have to fix that too in my own kitchen too. You’ve inspired me to put up my all white platters on display would visually fill the space in my white kitchen and clear upper shelf space to use for the rest of my guest service until I can afford to fix my small kitchen. I was stuck with what to do in the interim that wouldn’t look silly or be a lot of clutter. You’re awesome!

@GarrettLeChic Love your strategic handbag placement. Looks like a Birkin. I absolutely love your style, it’s very much my style as well. I’ve been binging on your videos, you have a lot of very helpful tips of the trade. You and I agree on quite a few things I’ve noticed…especially word signs <eye roll>. Just wanted to drop into the comments to let you know how much I love your channel! I really hope to see it grow in the coming months. I am also a HUGE blue & white collector myself, so I love that about you. Don’t worry babe, ya can’t have too much B&W; no such thing! I myself have 20 pieces in my living room, displayed tastefully throughout. Keep up the beautiful work, I adore your input on all things interior design. Kisses.

  27. Deborah Lindstrom on September 18, 2022 at 3:26 am

Took a lot of your advice Garrett, over the objection of my tenant who wanted an all-white kitchen. Going with medium wood and white-gold veined counters. Need to select pulls and knobs this weekend. Went with a little bit of a 70’s vibe. What do you think of a cupped pull that doesn’t contrast with the wood–also dark? That would mean mixed metals because it will clash with the SS faucet and sink right? Thanks for your help. I’ve been paying attention. You are why I sprung for the cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling and the not too trendy colors.

  28. Cath Baby on September 18, 2022 at 3:30 am

Oh damn, Garrett…another spot on video! How did I ever function without you??? I need you to stop me from doing something. Please. I beg of you. I live in the Canadian countryside – not to be confused with the Canadian wilderness – I am redoing my kitchen. My wee (800 sq.ft) house has an open kitchen, dining area, living room. The walls are Granny Smith Apple green. The floor (someday) with be this satin Maple, beyond gorgeous laminate flooring I’ve had for 13 years (always knew I’d use it someday!). My new counters are butcher block, cabinets will be white thermofoil. Here’s when I need you to stop me. My living room has a woodstove (used all the time in cold weather). I want to put brick tile veneers behind it (up to a four foot height which is Ontario Building code) and use them on the kitchen backsplash (up to the underside of the upper cabinets). Please stop me. One of my sisters is begging me not to do it. What are your thoughts? Signed……Confused in Canada.

thank you, my dear garrett … i found your channel only coincidentally some weeks ago … now, have have started watching your videos by and by … i am an old northern german lady who has decided to declutter her home/house and to kick out things in a style… i had to realize that i have become operationally blind within the decades, and that i have collected far too many things in general and in particular tin cans, with and without advertising imprint … there are hundreds … but also candles and candle stands, cat figures, tea pots, and and and … even my little garden was too full.
your explanations help me a lot to change things to the better …
i have donated things to different welfare bazars, a to-be-museum for tabacco and alcoholic drinks, to youngsters and so on … i must say my house has become a lot lighter – in weight and looks
i hope to be done by the and of the year – and then i am going to start a lot of paint work – and a second round of decluttering.
my godson (almost 20) seems to be very happy with it and claims that i seem to become younger with everything that leaves the house.
garrett, thank you for the inspiration !!!
    best wishes, fee

Glad I found you. As I’m making decisions on paint colors and decor for my kitchen. (Bought a lovely older home that hasn’t been touched since the 1970’s, or before). Want to make it enjoyable to live in, & update where needed, but keep the character of the house. The kitchen could benefit from more than the one central ceiling light fixture and the over the sink light. I’m thinking of under cupboard dimmable lighting and a second ceiling light.

  33. Debra Hill on September 18, 2022 at 3:32 am

Intentional is essential for the cabinets gap. I have seen homes that use that space for storage. Huge aluminum pans, crockpot, coffee pot system ,boxed glassware, boxed dishes, air fryers, paper plates, plastic storage pieces. Etc. I have the issue, but I remained intentional, not filling the entire space from end to end, small cohesive grouped items in odd numbers .Giving the eyes time to rest.
🤔🤔🤔Peace health and blessings from Atlanta.

  34. Bionic Goon on September 18, 2022 at 3:32 am

I have a vaulted ceiling, open concept with big space above my kitchen cabinets. To make it easy to clean I line the tops of the cabinets with aluminum foil. It’s hidden behind the crown molding so you can’t see it. I just go up on a step ladder and change the foil each season.

  35. Rust and Ribbons on September 18, 2022 at 3:34 am

This was packed with such great information! Loved it. I do have that gap..unfortunately..but, keep it bare and just have lighting. Great tips! Thank you so much. Your silver chest is 🥰.

Very enjoyable I’m a pisces in fact it’s my bday today! I’d love some more advice on mixing metals. Predominantly I love gold, but for taps and indeed sinks it starts to be difficult, I know you mentioned in another video to mix that way one is always in fashion. I have been thinking about this alot. just feel strange about gold and silver like I always wear gold jewellery and don’t mix…. but I’m about to choose all the hardware through an entire new build. Gold is going to be difficult….(think hinges, sinks, door knobs, taps etc etc) The only metal I can get throughout for consistency is shiny silver…. any thoughts? I guess diamonds are effectively whitey silver with gold in Jewellery and they always work…

Great video, regarding kitchen cupboards, what do you suggest if there is an existing bulk head? (if one wanted to save money,,,and does one really use the entire space of a cupboard that extends to the ceiling?) stay well 🙂

  44. rose on September 18, 2022 at 3:49 am

I just literally changed my lighting up above cabinets yesterday! I hate clutter so I like lights instead. but I changed from an orange glow to blue. I never liked the orange tone the old one gave off. It’s just so pretty at night to have the light as a drop back, it lights the whole wall above the cabinets with a pretty glow.

  45. Kim Peterson on September 18, 2022 at 3:50 am

    Love you Garrett!

I have 11 foot ceilings in a Victorian house and we did not take our custom built-by -my -husband cabinets to the ceiling. You don’t wanna know the grease that has accumulated there over 30 years. We’ve cleaned the tops off 2 to 3 times in 30 years. I put my Chinese pottery up there which is visually arresting, but that collection is, as you say, not something that belongs in the kitchen.

But never fear— I’m renovating two other properties we will move to, a country cottage and a city condo. In both properties we took all cabinets to the ceiling because that grease buildup bugs the heck out of me.

I’m adding lighting to the top of my cabinets this weekend! I have a sloping ceiling in my kitchen and it was too hard to make cabinetry to the ceiling look any good so I left it open. I use the odd triangular shape to display my Le Creuset cookware. Cost me a fortune so it needs to be seen plus it adds a pop of red to my kitchen! With lights behind it, they’ll look even better. Thank you for this brilliant idea.
