Just watched this video and now I’m even more confused as to what style I want for my living room. I’m wondering if I’m just wanting Anti Gold Hollywood Regency.

Also for homes if you use a similar color pallet throughout does it look good if you mix up styles in different spaces that are seperate? For example if I go more casual in a loft than my downstairs living room.

Wow. Wow. I love this video. I struggle with my style identity because I like so many things. This is an excellent clarification of style ID

I’m guessing that I’d most enjoy a traditional rustic and eclectic decor style.

    @Lisa Holt Design
Okay so, deep breath, my style is Mid-Century Minimalist Bohemian. I love clean lines and asymmetry, but NOT "space-age" references. I love uncluttered surfaces and big low furniture, but NOT neutral palettes. I love natural woods and ornately crafted metals, and bright jewel tones with cream and sandy-gold as my warm neutrals, bead curtains, colorful art, but NOT layers upon layers of detail. In truth I love desert modern, Arts and Crafts, but I live in a boxy little house that will support neither of those architecturally, so how do I cope?

Hi Lisa, would you consider the old California style (think white walls, Saltillo floors) in the traditional category? Does is it have its own category? Why is this style not as popular, I absolutely love it. As well as its Latin American cousin— a kind of underdeveloped, utilitarian, close to earth feel. I have a hard time explaining and naming this look that I like. And I wonder why it’s not more represented. It’s super intuitive and useful (like mounting your most used kitchen tools on the wall), and it’s way more humble and resourceful. No flashy, trendy, or wasteful elements but still cozy. This in my opinion is a style that really lasts, but what would you call it?

  13. Brian on May 22, 2023 at 12:38 pm

some good analysis but examples here are exaggerated .

NYC lofts definitely have brick, as do some of the regular apartments, in general. I lived there for many years, and you see exposed brick walls commonly in the older buildings (not so much today in the newer highrises or contemporary buildings).

In San Francisco, exposed brick walls are less common because we have earthquakes here, and as a building material, exposed brick does NOT hold up well to earthquakes. You do see them occasionally, but not as commonly as you do in NYC and other urban centers. Exposed brick in an interior space is, quite literally, a safety hazard anywhere in California (or other places where earthquakes are common), not just in San Francisco proper.

(Yes, NYC has many earthquakes, but the island of Manhattan is solid bedrock, so you never feel them like you do in CA, NV, UT, KS and OK)

Hmm, wonder if I am a split personality? One part Scandanavian, the other part Bohemian/Eclectic mixed?

  18. Effect Phoenix on May 22, 2023 at 12:44 pm

That’s probably the clearest video about that i’ve seen

  19. Edward Casper on May 22, 2023 at 12:46 pm

My style tends to be eclectic because I like to save money buying used furniture whenever possible (and I bought my place partially furnished and decided to keep most of the serviceable pieces instead of replacing them). My space has a "southwestern" oak/Oriental/Art Deco/Arts and Crafts/streamlined vibe, but punctuated with stuff (dressers, an almost unused La-Z-Boy queen-size hide-a-bed in the guest bedroom, an oak roll-top desk, etc. which tend to be on the tradtional side). The unifying element in the public spaces is a general lack of ornamentation. The private spaces are mixed (i.e., eclectic/"Early Salvation Army"). To me, an overlooked factor in the trend toward additional color toward the end of the Mid-Century Modern era/70s was the widespread availability of color television. I don’t think set designers and producers wanted to showcase color TVs by producing shows that almost looked like they were shot in black and white because they used neutral, muted tones.

Can you do modern farmhouse with cottage? Just love your videos.

Hi Lisa! Love love love your tutorials! Would be so grateful for your advice if possible🙏 I’m trying to design my small condo and am torn between doing Grandmillennial, Regency Core (Bridgerton) and Hollywood Regency styles. I love airy florals and pastels, but also love dramatic looks with big indoor plants (that kind of jungle look), dark moody florals and jewel tone colors. Is it advisable to combine them? If not, can I do a different theme in the living room vs the bedroom or should they be consistent? Any tips or advice on pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! ❤️🥰

Thank you so much Lisa! Can you go into more detail about how to create our own lookbook and what questions we should be asking ourselves as we embark on our design journey?

  25. Virgie Mata on May 22, 2023 at 12:54 pm

There’s earthquakes almost everyday in Japan that’s why they are minimalist and lowered on the floor designs.

  30. evita pieron on May 22, 2023 at 1:01 pm

My personal taste is deeply influenced by the house and its location. A little cabin in the mountains with wooden facade wont look healthy in Hollywood regency or art deco styles. Somehow the style is imposed, so how can we decide about our preferencies if the building itself comes in a certain style? If we contradict the interior and the exterior the result is poor. I just need to mention: I Love the way your artistic eye cooperates with your scientific mind.

Lisa, I love your videos so much. They are so informative and inspiring. I am a new interior design student and just want to learn more! it feels so rewarding to study something I find so fascinating.
My mom has a Tuscan style kitchen thats starting to look a bit dated. She wants to go with a updated french country vibe for her living room. I feel apprehensive about this, fearing it could easily look disconnected. Also the challenge of making the kitchen speak the same language of the living room seems difficult. What are your thought on this? I think it might be more successful to go with a transitional living room while bringing some french cottage elements in! Please let me know, It would be such an honor to hear your insight. Huge Fan!!

I adore your videos! I’m currently having a house built and have been watching your channel for ideas. Could you do a video on the best way to achieve the Regency/Boutique Hotel look? I love the look of a classy, chic, almost classic Parisienne interior without overdoing the glam aspect of it too much.

  40. Marlynne K on May 22, 2023 at 1:13 pm

I grew up in a SUPER traditional home but I realized recently I gravitate towards a mix.

  41. Roni Miller on May 22, 2023 at 1:17 pm

We moved from the coast to the mountains. I have always been 100% traditional in my tastes. But I like the bones of our new home, which is more contemporary than I am used to. I’m shooting for a transitional rustic. Any suggestions?

  42. Jana Aslesen on May 22, 2023 at 1:17 pm

Is there a modern equivalent to Gothic Revival or Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1920s?
I want to base my home on the Hobbit house from the movie, it’s so cozy! But I’m worried that it’s going to look medieval and costumey.

  43. kathykoutsioukis on May 22, 2023 at 1:17 pm

I think it should be mentioned that all those Minimalist looking spaces had built-in storage that kept the lines clean. These people DID own things.

Thank you Lisa .This so very helpful as il’m the cheif decorator.I’m trying to figure this out .I’m older, my adult kids live at home , DIL .I have some ideas but my mind feels very confused. I love the old hollywood look from the 40’s .I also like some regency peices and I like art deco as well. But I also love antiques and traditional. I kind of like palm beach regency too .Lol.IDK .I don’t like kitchy from the Hollywood regency era .

  49. Writer In Fact on May 22, 2023 at 1:22 pm

Thanks. I enjoyed looking at styles in terms of relatedness – a new point of view for me. Your descriptions were clear and specific (with illustrations) – which helps those of us who are more verbal than visual.

  50. Dina Rimer on May 22, 2023 at 1:23 pm

I’m really leaning towards modern organic…which according to your wonderful presentation looks alot like beach coastal without the blue? I like all of the organic elements mentioned in industrial and rustic as well thou…I’m trying to figure it out…
