How to Install Composite Decking | This Old House
How to Install Composite Decking | This Old House
Norm Abram and Liz install composite decking. The wood toned planks are evenly spaced and attached using clips and screws. They work their way all the way to the last plank to finish it.

What episode is this?
Pretty sure she wasn’t able to drive that screw in lol
Well done!
That hidden clip that secures the board is really cool!
1:54 they really go over the top to show how useless home owners help really is.
Funny, I’m in the middle of doing the same project, with the same product. You might also mention they offer a facia board.
I’m putting down Timbertech NOW and its painfully slow and tedious. The hidden fasteners are great but can be a bit annoying to keep all aligned.Timbertech also has a CORE-TEX screw system with matching plugs that are absolutely perfect.the plugs are designed to work with the bit they provide and are invisible after applied.only defect with the system is you can NOT back the screws out—so make absolutely sure you want and need that screw in that exact spot or you’ll be cursing and looking for a saw all to cut it out of the underside.also pay close attention to the spacing specs as this stuff will grow before your eyes in the summer sun.Good to see old Norm out there working…I hope that girl made him a sammich too😆
Is joist tape necessary?
Anyone else notice those joists look like they’re spaced 12" instead of 16" because this
stuff doesn’t have the rigidilty of wood?
Her husband must be very handy as well where is he Probably inside playing video games
I am in the middle of placing a new deck and I just hear about composite deck from my neighbors. How long will this composite deck last before I have to replaces a new composite deck? And should I return all the deck wood I purchased and get composite deck better?
Good video; however, they didn’t mention that you should either seal or use a good oil based paint to the wood foundation underneath to reduce the opportunity for wood rot down the road.
Norm!
Let’s give some airtime to women drilling, but only show her drilling the beginning of the screw and not the bottom half.
Great job as always Norm! You are looking good!
Nice Videos
Couple recs to owners,
Trex, azek fiberon is plastic wood mix, so if cutting diablo for example makes a blade just for trex, etc Carbide also works but it might melt the wood
The pieces are very heavy but imo work it compared to regular wood, they require cleaning with a deck brush and simple green and thats it
Family chose trex over azek for the price and becuase of the flat drink rail, azek only has curved top railings.
If you put one in, Id eventually ad in a deck sun awning, they do like to get hot if in the sun
Family also used leftover pieces to create a door on a hinge and store stuff under the deck.
the only downside about this material is the messiness when you’re cutting
it’s really bad

Sure promote deck installs when there is a nationwide treated lumber and composite decking shortage
Not questioning Norm, but at 2:00 is there a riving knife on that table saw?
My composite deck nightmare https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H36i8f782CE
Hmmm. I need to redo my decking. Kinda want to do giant sequoia wood or redwood sanded down to smooth as glass with automotive 3000 grit sandpaper like a 1930’s Chris Craft style boat finish and then lacquered or whatever they did…then use skateboard griptape in the walking areas so you can actually walk on it. Anyone please chime in on how that would never work. Thanks in advance.
Anyone know what pattern would work for a 222in long deck with 24oc joist using 16ft treated
If you’re building a deck using DekPro aluminum railing and you need some textured black balusters, let me know. Just finished ours and have 20 left over textured black balusters 32" long. eighthof8@hotmail.com
Hi
please let me know where we can buy those small metal attachment & what kind of air gun u were using & the deck screw . thanks
can you just use a drill?
I’m a former union carpenter of 30 years. I had to show this simple video to some young inexperienced contractors who put a 1 1/2 rip right at the front by steps instead of against the house. And their picture frame didn’t go all the way around, they chose to stop it 6 inches from the house too. LOL….it’ amazing the lack of common sense/basic skills passing for builder companies here in North East NJ.
The exact color I need
I dont recommend decks. they always fall apart.
Half-capped Composite. I won’t be surprised if it warps 2 – 3 years later
Gun shoots the screw.
i really like the video but wish they would have shown the installation of the perimeter board used to hide the "end grain". Depending on the support available underneath that can be tricky. Also , what technique did they use for finishing off the front edge of the perimeter board?
I am in awe that those screws didn’t bubble up around the head. I did a small area recently and when we face screwed the boards, we had to drill a countersink so it wouldn’t bubble. And yes, I was using the correct composite screws. How did y’all do that?!
why put composite decking on a wooden floor joist, composite on steel = 100yrs
I really love this kind of projects… good job guys!
I hate plastic anything…. It melts. Is toxic when it burns…..I would rather deal with a wood deck.. As the second you drop a BBQ pit on it.. It’s going to get burned….
Norm is definitely the man 👍
First
Because its hidden screws, how can u change a stick that’s in the middle if one goes bad?
Why didn’t you start at the wall side then you don’t have to do that Micky mouse of a job…
That deck sure looks good. I did a fine job
Does anyone know what brand is that nail gun?
Boiling hot in summer and like glass in winter Beware …..burns babies, children and pets
Those screws are described as carbon steel, making them brittle so the screw heads can break off at edges of short lengths of decking.
Why didn’t you pre drill the holes? Those boards will split!
What model sensor is that? I can’t find it anywhere
This summer I stripped (5 layers of stain and paint from prior owners that had been shedding for yrs), sanded and stained my 14′ x 20′ deck, rungs and railing myself. It came out beautiful and helps husband see the deck in moonlight (light reflected stain) when he comes home at 1 am from work. Also built a catio along and round the deck. It came out well. Husband and cats are very happy.
Now during winter time to plan next summer’s project. Basement rehash (including repointing 100 yr old stone foundation) or waterproof (aka cat proof) flooring on first floor or putting in drainage around the outside of house (neighbors have drainage issues into my basement).
