Thank you Sarah! So…I took your advice! I turned on zoom about a half hour before my next virtual meeting and set up my background, using my entry to our dining area in the background as a frame around me and tweaked some decor (simplified) on either side leading up to me, fixed the lighting in front, used a small pillow behind my back, sat upright and checked that the top of my head was just a bit from the top of the screen. As soon as we all checked in, there were about 6 of us, one of the docs (I work for a health authority) remarked: hold on please, I need to tell Sandra how inviting her zoom looks, I just want to crawl in there, it looks so cozy! HA!
Your videos are always a joy for me and this one LOL made my day after that! Seriously though, GREAT tips and I’m on zoom a few times a week from home; might as well make it the best zoom I can 🙂

Wonderful topic and thank you! Zoom meetings are so common at my work now and I do several a week. Backgrounds are always challenging, you have just made it so much easier!

Great video Sarah! I have to do a lot video conference calls and I am actually shocked how many people have no idea about lighting and acceptable camera angles etc. …

Very good. Very helpful.BUT.. .we share the computer space and have one stationary computer….nor a laptop… Maybe we need backgrounds on wheels so we can change the space….and 2 different chairs….style wise. On wheels…..and I’ll have to put his lunch kit on the floor, (but remember to put it back. etc., etc. .you get the idea…reality T V at our 🏠. Ha Ha

I love these suggestions! I have frequent zoom calls for a blogging group I’m in and I feel that wherever I am in the house there’s reno or unfinished spaces in the background. You’ve given me a lot to think about!

I downloaded the clothing and some backgrounds app (TV frames, etc.) for Zoom and have played around with wearing some of the hats like a crown and bunny ears during Zoom calls. smile! Have you finished all the YouTube Creator Academy workshops?

Just finished this for my husband’s home office. I painted the main wall a dark hunter green and then installed long shelves stained in a soft walnut color. The shelves are filled with books with all the pretty hardbound books directly behind his head (camera wise). His desk is placed next to the only window in the room. Already have gotten a lot of complements on it.

Hi, How did you blur your background without having that weird affect where it outlines your head? Are you using a specific camera that focus’s on you, if so what camera? Thank you!

I notice backgrounds all the time, especially when watching news channels and interviews. Sometimes the background is more interesting than the speaker. During my Zoom summer school classes some people use a green screen situation (one guy had a Hawaii background.) So distracting…
    Everyone should watch this video!!

  20. Anita Clegg on June 11, 2022 at 10:59 pm

I love your background better than Shea’s. I like yours because it is your home and how you designed it. That’s why I watch you, I want to learn how and what you did. Not to be comparing but Sheas background is nice but I feel it looks like a fake tv show staged background.

Love this video content. Peoples backgrounds drive me crazy.

Thank you for sharing easy to understand advice for styling our homes for online meetings. Last year I had to create a space for weekly meetings. I finally settled on being in front of a quilted wall hanging that my daughter made for me. It has a white background with red appliqued hearts which signifies my love for ministering to women and creating items with various crafts. I praise God for leading me to your channel! I’m learning so much about creating beautiful, soothing spaces in my home! Plus, you live in my beloved home state! Hugs…

Perfect timing for me to see this video! I have an national conference I am attending at the end of the month. This is incentive to get finally get my office space moved to a different room. the new space will have a window in front of me and another to my side…that will be great for natural lighting! Also I will have a huge antique apothecary cabinet behind me for visual interest. I like the idea of creating lines…I will use the the top of the cabinet for display pieces that will draw attention to me. Thank you so much for the words of wisdom!

Zoom has been a nightmare for people like me who are not photogenic. It’s like 60 uninterrupted minutes of looking at your worst.

  28. Delicate Venus Flytrap on June 11, 2022 at 11:09 pm

Actually i prefer your background to Shea’s lol… well done, thank you for these tips.

When we started weekly extended family meetings last year, every Sunday evening, we started out with fun novelty backdrops that were available through a Zoom App thing, (ie. beach backdrop, outer space backdrop…) so I decided to try the Spa backdrop, including a ‘Green’ mud mask and my hair in a turban, white bathrobe… I joined the family meeting…and had a good laugh when I realized, that my GREEN face mask, along with the GREEN SCREEN fake app backdrop, made my whole face disappear and all my sisters and mom could see was a floating turban with eyes! lol!
