I just realize a curved sofa would be Perfect for my Mom’s living room!
We always have to sorta, curve the armchair and side tables cuz of where the fireplace and dining room are.
But a curved sofa would fit SO much better and be less visually cluttered!

My bathroom has a pedestal sink and I hated it from the moment we moved in.

  3. Robroy MacGregor on January 21, 2023 at 4:29 am

We made our own vanity and included a vessel sink because it allowed us to have a drawer directly under it. Our house is small and we needed storage. That is the most used drawer in the whole vanity.

I hate my vessel sink, it came with the house and i cant get rid of it now maybe later

  5. Veronica Reither Reese on January 21, 2023 at 4:32 am

I dislike farm sinks. If you are washing dishes or other items, you have to rinse your items in that same water. There goes your bubbles and you have to empty the sink to keep from overflowing.

  6. Laura Chatfield on January 21, 2023 at 4:33 am

I agree. I bought a house with a very deep bowl and a very short faucet. They also for some reason put it to the right of the sink instead of the opposite side of where you’d be standing, as if they were left handed or something. It’s awkward and hard to get scoops if water to wash face or rinse mouth after brushing teeth.

Vessel sinks 👎🏾👎🏾👎🏾 i have to stand on my tip toes to wash my hands

As soon as I heard "arc lamp," my mind went to a specialty electrical device called an arc lamp. These are lighting devices that predates incandescent filament lights by decades, was used in movie projectors and search lights in the first part of the twentieth century. Florescent bulbs are modern examples. See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arc_lamp

I think a curved sofa in the corner of a smaller room can work

  10. richie on January 21, 2023 at 4:41 am

    I agree

In my country almost every house has a sauna. The bathrooms are usually designed with that in mind and there isn’t much shower curtains or such. Going to sauna is often social, so there will be multiple people in the shower area as well, and everything will get wet anyways so we just let it happen. Open showers.

I live in an apartment with no sauna, and in my small apartment the shower is awful. That space could really benefit from a closed of shower space. That bathroom is not designed to get wet entirely, yet it does. There’s no space to hold my clothes while I shower. In my parents home there is a spesific room to change your clothes before entering the shower room, mine doesn’t. Yet I still have this awful half wall that doesn’t do much

Open showers with walk-in are supposed to have a sloped floor so the water drains down to the waste. But I agree on all the points of that one.

I’ve been using open showers for the last 4 years and nothing is splashed outside of it. Maybe my bathrooms were always not that big. Oh, once I lived in a Dutch apartment with a no-wall shower, and I loved it.

  16. thatjillgirl on January 21, 2023 at 4:43 am

I haaaate vessel sinks. Every time I have to use one, it’s so annoying to get your hands in there under the faucet but within the bowl, to say nothing of trying to wash your face in one. I just always feel like I have to try way too hard to not hit my hands on the sides while I’m using it.

And open showers are definitely more annoying than you think they’re going to be. When we bought our first house, the master bath shower had an open design where the glass only encloses about half the shower/bath spot. It looks beautiful. But we quickly found out the splashing couldn’t be adequately contained. We wound up buying a shower curtain for the open half. Which, hey, it still looks pretty good with the curtain. But that’s just something to keep in mind with those open showers.

The only reason I have an arc lamp is for when I’m hand-quilting. It reaches.right over my chair for great lighting. Other than that, my husband constantly smacks his head on it. He wants it gone.

  18. Cornbread Oracle on January 21, 2023 at 4:46 am

The best shower we ever had was in a tiny bathroom in our cabin. Hubby gutted the whole thing, ripped out the standard tub/shower insert and rebuilt a tile surround shower. It had a half wall, tiled and a lipped threshold. No shower curtain and no glass to obsess over. Just wipe the tile quickly after the last shower each night and it was a breeze to keep clean. I loved it!

  19. Mike Chan on January 21, 2023 at 4:47 am

100% right on the doorless shower. You want to keep that steam in. Doorless showers are not soothing, or cozy. Instead they are cold and drafty.

  20. Marie Villhauer on January 21, 2023 at 4:48 am

I hate pedestal sinks in Airbnb’s or hotel bc there is no where to put your cosmetics, skincare, toothbrush ect.

  21. LordGertz on January 21, 2023 at 4:48 am

For vessel sinks cleaning that is when you go to your steam cleaning wand and a towel. But for everything else pretty dead on, some like the curving sofa are great in large spaces, but that is not mist of use. I think Home Design is once more beginning to trend away from what was once said to be it’s core principal Stylish Practicality (at might have been Stylish Usability it has been years since I heard the quote.)

  22. Tadas Talaikis on January 21, 2023 at 4:49 am

Good tip on vessel sink, will reconsider using it 😁

  23. citticat2 on January 21, 2023 at 4:50 am

I have a smaller shower area and I have an open shower against the pony wall and if a little water sprays out on to the marble floor so what – I like the freedom of having a open concept and I never have to wipe down glass.

  24. dyl rols on January 21, 2023 at 4:52 am

Love it ! Thanks from Wales Uk 👍🏻⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  25. jeanemery1 on January 21, 2023 at 4:54 am

I despise pedestal sinks. Where are you supposed to put your stuff? Electric toothbrush, curling iron, water glass, etc.

  26. toadamine on January 21, 2023 at 4:55 am

Don’t you have central heating? How cold is your bathroom wjen showering? 😆

  27. Annie Rocks on January 21, 2023 at 4:56 am

I have a vessel sink and it is easier to clean that the regular ones

  28. Amanda K. on January 21, 2023 at 4:56 am

i never had a problem with water splashing or feeling cold in a half shower. i was surprised to hear these complaints. i think they’re stylish, accessible and easier to clean

  29. fifikusz on January 21, 2023 at 4:56 am

What about the bathtubs standing on legs along the wall?

  30. lover heart LoL on January 21, 2023 at 4:57 am

  31. Kelliana Bourbon on January 21, 2023 at 4:58 am

My apartment has a pedestal sink, but not like a cute one, and it’s so stupid. Like they could have spent a bit more money for storage

  32. ttrev007 on January 21, 2023 at 4:58 am

the most impractical thing my mom ever got was a floor that was not waterproof. I was absolutely not surprised when it got a water blister from a small mount of water on the floor. it is near the fridge water dispenser. She is still in denial and somehow thinks that it was a good idea.

  33. S Sisu on January 21, 2023 at 4:58 am

I have a vessel sink and I absolutely hate it. We just rent so it wasn’t my choice but it is so impractical and impossible to wash your face in the sink without the water getting everywhere.

  34. Francesca on January 21, 2023 at 4:58 am

I fully agree about the open shower. I stayed at a vacation home that had a very large tiled shower enclosure. It wasn’t even open and it was freezing. I’ve lived in some crazy places (having to use an outdoor shower in a northern CA winter) and it reminded me of that. I don’t think shivering even with hot water running on you is an ideal experience. It made me miss my tiny shower enclosure at home (something I’d never thought I’d miss, haha!).

  35. Loissupes on January 21, 2023 at 5:00 am

Check out the skinny confidential. She actually puts rocks in the bottom of her sink. Looks great but I do not understand how she cleans it!

  36. M. Hart on January 21, 2023 at 5:01 am

    Grimey little hands…lol!

  37. john blaine on January 21, 2023 at 5:01 am

I think you forgot to mention that stupid “ frustration” clock on the wall behind you with no numerals and both the hour and minute hands almost the same size. Or is it kinetic art and not meant for telling the time?🤣?

  38. Kate BC on January 21, 2023 at 5:01 am

Agree wholeheartedly, Nick. Both types of sinks are simply not practical!

  39. The Ad on January 21, 2023 at 5:02 am

As a microbiologist, I got a good laugh out your insistence of using soap. 😊
Oh, and deer heads mounted on the wall are fun to bump your head on, just like arc lamps.

  40. Ryan Yoder on January 21, 2023 at 5:03 am

People don’t care about functional it’s all about likes on social media.

  41. Lesley Sogl on January 21, 2023 at 5:06 am

In the UK the half-door shower is a thing! I’ve lived in 5 houses here and in all 5 of them, the shower water ends up everywhere and is a nightmare to dry. It takes longer to clean the bathroom floor than to take a shower! Also, ALL showers here are in bathtubs, which is incredibly dangerous (especially if your elderly) because standing and hopping out on one leg from a curved surface that is covered in soapy water is a death wish! Maybe you can add this to the list too

  42. Darlene Stadler on January 21, 2023 at 5:10 am

I wanted to install a vessel sink because I loved how beautiful they are. Then, I was a guest at two different destinations with gorgeous vessel sinks, but found them to be awkward to wash up over. I then knee that the vessel sink was not an option, and appreciated coming home to my counter top sink.

  43. AppleJade on January 21, 2023 at 5:11 am

Re: open shower – in a lot of homes in Asia, they have no shower doors… the whole bathroom is The Shower apparently 😮 I asked how my towel was supposed to stay dry and I get this weird look like they think I’ve never showered in my life …

  44. Karolyn Knight on January 21, 2023 at 5:12 am

Thank you Nick! I live in a home covered top to bottom with impractical furnishing. I rent this house and it always gets oohs and Ahs but it’s so hard to keep clean.

  45. Book Mouse on January 21, 2023 at 5:16 am

I have a lovely sink vessel…an use an old tooth brush to clean it. Yes it can be difficult but I love it. 😛

  46. Bonnie Ordonez on January 21, 2023 at 5:17 am

You take what I know I already know and put it into words. I just recently found you on YouTube. You’re my new goto fave!

  47. misses elise on January 21, 2023 at 5:18 am

6:30 in some places (primarily japan iirc), the shower is a room on its own

  48. John Terpack on January 21, 2023 at 5:19 am

I never would have guessed you were six foot. Yeah, I have more scars on my head than I care to think about from living in a world designed by dwarves.

I can outdo the pedestal sink. My sink is a wall hanger. Sure, it has tiny little spots on each side of the faucet that can hold a bar of soap or something. But still as practical as a screen door on a submarine. Also, no cabinet underneath means exposed plumbing and no place to hide the plunger.

  49. S. A. DeWitt on January 21, 2023 at 5:25 am

As a short woman, just over 5′, I strongly dislike the vessel sinks. I have to reach up and over to wash. Yes they look nice, but are not practical.

  50. Stacey Rogers on January 21, 2023 at 5:25 am

The open shower is pretty cool in warmer climates. My brother lives in LA (southern California) and has a bathroom with a drain close to the middle of the floor near(ish) the shower and it feels quite free to use that shower.
