This week, we visit a 3-room resale HDB flat in Bugis that was built in the 1970s and is over 40 years old at this point. Homeowners Klaire and Douglas were attracted because of the condition of the place, as it was very airy and bright. Being located in Bugis also meant that it was convenient, and they had good framed views of the cityscape as well.

The theme of the home is a mid-century modern style but done up in a minimalist fashion. Hence, despite it being a 3-room HDB of 732 square feet in size, the space does feel bigger than it is on paper. They chose a combination of vinyl and tiles for the floor – with vinyl from Belgium to take up the living and dining areas, and tiles for the kitchen and bathrooms as they wanted something more practical.

From their dining area, the wall was taken down and a sliding door put in place that spans from one end to the beam in the centre. As such, they are able to both compartmentalise and open up the space as needed. One of the interesting features of the home is due to the beam, which might have been an eyesore for some but they’ve turned it into a distinguishing feature instead with the archway.

Special thanks to Klaire and Douglas for showing us around their lovely space.

That’s a beautiful apartment, but it’s not Mid-century Modern, it’s just Modern or Contemporary.

  2. Irwn Ayb on February 20, 2023 at 6:18 am

nice but i wonder if it’s easy to sell the house if you hack down a bedroom wall.

  3. Renee Koh on February 20, 2023 at 6:20 am

place is decently designed but it doesn’t embody the real mid-century designs, so the term is a bit of misuse here.

Don’t know why I seem to like this owner’s taste. The moment you enter the unit when they welcome you in, you can tell how fresh and breezy it is. This will definitely be how my first choice of home concept for my first house and not forgetting the cat abode

  29. Contrarian on February 20, 2023 at 6:54 am

Great location which is why it’s value doesn’t drop regardless of its remaining lease. HDB flats in non-prime locations would’ve faced significant depreciation with half balance lease.

  30. MindTwister on February 20, 2023 at 6:58 am

Nice Belgium vinyl. It gives it the more natural woody look compared to many others. Great Choice!

  31. Beezlebub on February 20, 2023 at 6:58 am

Loved that they made cat holes in the cabinetry. And Klare is beautiful 😍.

  35. Yan Ng on February 20, 2023 at 7:02 am

Suggest future videos to show both the original and new floor plan. This apartment has been converted into a one-bedroom, and bedroom2 is now the dining area? Showing the new floor plan gives good/factual reference as to how/ how much the space has changed.

  36. Sandra Leong on February 20, 2023 at 7:03 am

I like the minimalist feel without the "coldness" which minimalist style usually exudes. The use of dark wooden colour balances it out. Nice. The kitchen counter top and the table can work doubly hard besides their intended use. Doubly nice.

  37. Anermil A on February 20, 2023 at 7:04 am

I agree – the house looks really nice at night with the proudly Singapore view. That’s the kind of home you wanna go to at end of the day.

  38. Tricia Low on February 20, 2023 at 7:08 am

One of my favourite homes in this channel

  39. Jannat on February 20, 2023 at 7:09 am

I feel like the cat furs really enhance the design of the house itself. Haha

  40. Haley Martin on February 20, 2023 at 7:09 am

Good idea for the cat hole. Love it! And wht do they called, btw way? Gender? Hehe… the cat melt me down…

  41. whitepod on February 20, 2023 at 7:12 am

even the cats blend with the interiors

  42. Jasveer Singh Bal on February 20, 2023 at 7:12 am

They have made a wonderful home. That is the specialty touch I feel in this home.

  43. Mits Millan on February 20, 2023 at 7:14 am

It’s nice, but it’s neither Mid-Century Modern, nor is it Minimalist. A more fitting title for the style would be just "Modern".

  44. John Tang on February 20, 2023 at 7:14 am

What a lovely couple and home!
