Inside An Architect-Designed Sleek And Stylish 5-Room HDB Home

This week, we tour a 5-room HDB at Tampines sized at 1,216 square feet. Homeowners Geoffrey and Sian Ching did not have a particular design style in mind, but they knew from the start that they wanted something modern and sleek, with black and wood accents. Where they differed from everyone else was that Geoffrey actually has an architecture background – so he could put his expertise to the test here with his own home!

One of the biggest changes was the hacking down of one of the common bedrooms, this allowed for the dining place to be situated there instead, and made the living space a lot more open and spacious.

They were also very conscious of storage spaces, hence the full-length storage where the TV is placed, this gave them lots of different storage cabinetry to store away their items neatly.

We like the seamless nature of the apartment too. The wooden fluted feature wall provides a sleek transition between the living and private spaces of the home – so much so that their friends have trouble locating where the bathroom is in the house!

Special thanks to Geoffrey and Sian Ching for showing us around their wonderfully modern home. For more please visit: https://www.mynicehome.gov.sg/home-tours/reno-journey-an-architects-home-big-reveal-pt-3/

Wisely designed and love everything concealed ❤️

Design is nice but just imagine the nightmare of cleaning in between those fluted wooden panels and the concealed panels vice versa.

Architect indeed (not to be conflated with interior designing or house staging). Can tell from the line and curves. A lot of thought appears to have been put into this. Very nice work 😮

Nice design!! Did they actually hack the walls in bedroom 2 (make it smaller) so that they can fit in the extra wardrobe behind the master bedroom door?

Decent! But kitchen and toilet a bit too dark for my liking.

Seldom see homeowners "conceal" natural lights. But then, I think they might be introverts. Ha! And it’s a beautiful home nevertheless. Well done.

Only need one word to describe the renovation……….NICE

  8. Online Voice on May 27, 2022 at 9:07 pm

The reno is nice, but it seems you have to turn on the aircond most of the time, since there is not much natural air flow in your design.

  13. Shawn Lim on May 27, 2022 at 9:11 pm

Wait… this place looks super familiar…. Is it the same one that the tefal ads were shot in?

  14. Candy Loh on May 27, 2022 at 9:14 pm

The whole house seems very dark, even for the toilet….. limited sunlight coming in, too many concealed corners, notice that most lights have to be on even during daytime. Sleek but not practical…

beautiful home!, wondering about the bed frame though, is it plastic or some sort of fabric (the curved cream & green feature). Either way, going to be harder to clean, esp the nooks. hmm ..

We really like the wooden concealing doors that hide rooms away, achieving a sleek look and creating an air of mystery in the house 😂

Look nice but such theme home are best suited for large landed properties with huge space, or at least high ceilings. This just feels claustrophobic

  24. Qasrina on May 27, 2022 at 9:30 pm

Super sleek home! Love how everything is concealed and colours of the home kept minimal💯

This is such a beautiful house…. very impressed. ^^

  27. Kah Hao Tay on May 27, 2022 at 9:35 pm

Beautiful place! I see the traits of a public servant in the lady, “why can’t this be cheaper?!?, why are we choosing this over that?” 😝😝 like a procurement expert.

  28. Ji Zhang on May 27, 2022 at 9:36 pm

I’m shocked to see that they have to turn on so many lights in bright daytime, just to get the lighting effects as "deisgned", when the valuable natural light coming from the service yard that could contribute to the kitchen and dinning areas is totally blocked, not to mention the monthly electricity bill that will follow… As an architect myself, I can totally understand that this is typical for an architect: sacrafice so many valuable things unnecessarily to just following a "design idea"…
