This week, we visit Kelly’s cosy 2-room BTO flat in Bukit Batok. As an architect who founded Studio Oasis Architects, this 505 square feet apartment is a perfect example of how a small space can be transformed into a comfortable home. The first thing Kelly did was to remove the internal drywall partition, creating an open concept living space.

Kelly’s kitchen is a highlight of the apartment, featuring custom carpentry and a beautiful pastel pink color scheme along with a quartz countertop. She chose to retain some of the existing finishes of the unit, which inspired her choice of color.

While it is an open concept space, she did incorporate a sliding panel that can be used to segregate the different spaces when needed.

Storage is not an issue in this apartment as Kelly cleverly hid a full-height wardrobe system behind a flushed panel.

The main feature of the house is the platform bed that extends towards the study, creating a seating area as well. A screen was installed at the bed for privacy, and the design language carries on behind the bed and sliding panel, creating interesting light patterns on the floor.

For the dining, Kelly opted for a low dining table to create a cosy atmosphere, similar to a sofa set. There is no sofa or TV wall in the living area, but instead, Kelly has open shelving where she keeps her books.

Singles cannot buy new 3 room flats, only eligible for 2 room flats some choose to buy more expensive resale flats. I hope government can consider allowing them to buy 3 roomed flats, not so crammed. At least got a proper bedroom or a office room in a 3 room apartment. Also can HDB consider lowering the age of eligibility of purchase at 32 years of age instead of 35 now. Stressful for singles not having their own space.

Really good design. One of the few I’ve really liked that truly take into consideration how people feel in the space and not just purely based on technical rules. Everything kind of flows nicely.

What does 2-room flat mean? I was waiting for the other room to be featured but this is all I got. I am just used to hearing 2-bedroom condo (in Canada) that means 2 bedrooms. So anyone please help me out. Thank you.

This is by far the nicest and best flat I’ve seen. The layout is so clean and surreal, very relaxing to the eyes.

  10. pervertt on May 9, 2023 at 11:12 am

Well thought out small space that full of exquisite detail.
I would have never thought this was a tiny HDB flat.

not sure about the bed plataform, it looks a little chunky and the screen is almost not working as space divider, but love the rest of the apt, very simple and well designed!

  19. Ann Leong on May 9, 2023 at 11:25 am

Platform bed not that elder friendly; a renovation cost of $45k is a bit steep for 2rm BTO, I think my 4Rm replacement flat (previous 3Rm was enbloc) is about that amount (include built in kitchen table with hob & kitchen cabinet with hood)

  20. Raff on May 9, 2023 at 11:26 am

where is that dining set from!!

  21. Tammy Tsang on May 9, 2023 at 11:27 am

This apartment is compact but comfy. Kudos to the owner/ architect of this place for designing such a great place for her.

  22. TZE GOH on May 9, 2023 at 11:28 am

It’s a bit like New York City, with a view into other people’s windows, except that the outdoor actives of the arts like ballet or the opera or like the Met Museum is sorely lacking.

  23. Colin Bateman on May 9, 2023 at 11:29 am

Very well thought through and well designed space.

  27. Naimah Q on May 9, 2023 at 11:31 am

Near the bathroom there is a floor to ceiling storage wall unit. I LOVE the rounded corner it’s very smooth creating visual interest while remaining unobtrusive. Where can I get this?

  28. Enchanteralle on May 9, 2023 at 11:31 am

Beautiful and calming. If you don’t own a bunch of stuff and keep it simple, you can open up a small space. I love the wood design. Thanks for sharing!

  29. Iana on May 9, 2023 at 11:32 am

That kitchen and bathroom had me so impressed. It feels bigger than a 47sqm space! It doesn’t feel cramped but it also doesn’t feel sterile like many small spaces designed by architects.

  30. Ruby Vegso on May 9, 2023 at 11:32 am

Nah sleeping across the emtrance is a big feng shui non

  31. DESSERT X on May 9, 2023 at 11:34 am

first home without TV. haha cant imagine that gg

  37. wumingkkk on May 9, 2023 at 11:39 am

Not easy to shoot a 2-room flat due to small spaces. But this turns out very well to showcase that even small spaces have their purpose and unique design. Bravo Stacked Homes! Hope to see more of such small flats more.

  38. peh yi on May 9, 2023 at 11:40 am

    Estimated cost?

  39. rosecolouredglasses on May 9, 2023 at 11:42 am

Exudes comfort and ease. Apartment seems to have high ceilings, very lucky

  40. Gail Albers on May 9, 2023 at 11:45 am

very elegant looking space. I like the usage of wood and especially the rounded corners like in the BR.

  41. gennaterra on May 9, 2023 at 11:46 am

Why didn’t she move the bedroom into the kitchen so to have the bathroom close. I mean, such a small apartment a private bathroom is more useful.

  42. MJ on May 9, 2023 at 11:47 am

    So lovely

  43. M Butler on May 9, 2023 at 11:47 am

Really like this one, especially the curves being part of the design. I like the open woodwork and sensible layout. Does the bed open into more storage? I think a hidden access door under the mattress would be a good addition.

  44. lovely littlegirl on May 9, 2023 at 11:49 am

If I lived in this apartment, I would never leave. So cozy!! Such a dangerous apartment for a homebody like me

  45. Joel Low •卢家伟 on May 9, 2023 at 11:50 am

Love the layout that break boundaries and creating new spaces!

  46. Pandajojo Wilson on May 9, 2023 at 11:50 am

Like the design… like the wood screen and the sitting area

  47. Hanna S on May 9, 2023 at 11:51 am

I absolutely LOVE the pink kitchen! Such a unique idea, but it’s perfect in this apartment.

  48. Wed645 on May 9, 2023 at 11:55 am

I love all the round shaped elements. I noticed that the kitchen counters are high compared to your height. I am 5′ 0" tall and find the standard counter heights to be quite tall for me as I prepare food. Not able to use natural elbow bend to press down while chopping, stirring, or mixing. I have to raise my arms to work in the kitchen and because I can’t use gravity to help push down, my shoulder muscles fatigue pretty quickly. Since this was a custom design, I wonder why you choose to keep the counters at that height, compared to your body size. I wish my counters came to about my waist, that would be so much easier!

  49. Shana Ming yu on May 9, 2023 at 11:57 am

this is so smart! i love it ❤️

Beautiful. I wish I could live in a place like that. What is a household shelter? Greetings from Canada.
