Installing Vinyl Plank Flooring? Save Time and Money on Baseboard!
This is a quick option to save time and money when replacing carpet with vinyl plank flooring. The process is basically making a shoe moulding that looks like part of the existing baseboard.

Love it! One of the better solutions I’ve seen.
How can I cover the gap but with a brick wall
Genius! I hate the look of shoe moulding. This would be so much better!
Dude! I was going to replace ALL my baseboards.. you just put a hitch in my get-a-long… in a good way lol
This is exactly what i was looking for!! I’m trying to save my customer some money…. small crisis between she and her husband on costs. This should help…now to hunt this material down in austin texas!!
Helpfull! Thank you!
If I replace my current wood laminate floor I’m going to have large gaps under the baseboard and door trim casing. This ‘trick’ will not work.
Only really works if your floor can go under your existing skirting boards
Never thought of this, great idea!
Super good idea. Thanks! I can see you’re practical and your skill freehanding on the table saw showed me you have the kind of skills that only experience brings, so I subbed.

Thanks for watching!
THANK YOU! I did not want to go through the trouble of replacing all of our baseboards but, like you, I can’t stand the look of quarter round. Will definitely be using this tip.
What material did you use to cover up molding gap? I see it’s mdf but what product? Thx!
Quarter round looks alot better
What flooring is that? ❤
That is a good tip. It looks great. I’m trying to decide what to do after installing carpet tiles. My baseboards are a very simple 1"x4" (nominal) Quarter-round won’t fly. I might just do this, but going all the way up the height of my baseboards.
Lowe’s carries short shoe molding
Looks good but don’t have the money or patience to do that
Genius! Any ideas on a removable solution to the same problem? I need to cover the gaps, but my basement is finished with Owens Corning panels, so I don’t want to have to nail anything to it.
Thanks, solved my issue.
I’ve been thinking about using a doorstop moulding in replace of a normal shoe moulding/quarter round. What do you think of that?
Perfect. Now all I need is table saw 😁
Genius!
I’m still confused as to how much gap to leave between the floor and the trim. I thought there had to be a gap for expansion. It is that just around the edges of the floor?
awesome. thank you
Too bad I have stained pine that has already mellowed over 15 years 🙁

I wish I would’ve seen this video 3 hours ago before I ripped off all my baseboards 😕
That’s an AWSOME idea! Thanks for sharing!
Is it possible to fill the minuscule gaps between the shoe board and the floor? At the end I saw it wasn’t completely flush the to floor and that bothers the perfectionist in me 😅
How do you finish off the floor under kitchen cabinets? Do you caulk or use shoe moulding?
Looks fantastic
Great idea just what I needed thanks!
You are my hero! Hate removing and reinstalling baseboards
ok thanks for video. question: how can the planks still expand if you have the newly cut pieces to be pressed down on the vinyl planks
question: if done in the bathroom will i need to caulk the newly cut pieces to prevent moisture. is it necessary.
Great video and love this so much more than 1/4 rounds. I’ve seen recently people caulking between the floor and baseboard but what a mess IMO. We have a lot of variation in our flooring. What could be done to you to cut down the MDF strips of you don’t have a table saw? I’m just getting started in the tool game and watched your 3 must have tools. Great video there too. Should have gone with a thicker laminate flooring. In my case I am going to you oscillating tool to take out what I need on my flooring to fit in laminate under but if i do a bad job then I would caulk it.
Love your solution but I have rounded outside corners with the pre-formed rounded corner pieces that match the molding. Any ideas on how to handle that? Maybe I can cut slots in the back of the pieces to make them able to wrap around the corner but I don’t really like that idea. I thought this was going to be my solution for replacing my laminate with plank vinyl. Not giving up one idea, just need that corner solution- help… 😉
How can I cover the gap but it’s between a brick wall
How did you installed floor with wood base since floating floor?
Absolutely brilliant "idear"! I am having LVT installed in my office which currently has carpeting. I do not want the base trim ripped out and deal with the repair and/or touch ups afterwards. The only problem I have is that my trim is only 3 inches and tiered so I would have to get a very thin piece of replacement MDF. I might do something like this. Or try to get my installers to do it. I really like the flatness and will not do shoe or 1/4in molding. Thank you!
You can also use 1/2 inch corner cove molding, it looks much better than the typical quarter round, and is less visible.
gosh, Ive been scouring the web for this I hate shoe moulding. But my gap is so big on one side and I dont understand how to scribe, the house slopes down in the middle, so one end is fine and drops down 2", but the stove is there so I want to put it at least cover up to a bit behind it "for now". "1900 house it is what it is". ty!!
Wow.. You’re genius! Thanks you!
How do you know what size shom to use?
Is it okay to use mdf? I was told not to because of the possibility of swelling when it gets wet?
Man that’s a clean look! Smart
I like that floor. Smooth. What brand and color.
I’m having LVP installed and don’t want quarter round. The gap between existing baseboards and floor are wide due to previous carpet installations. We were going to remove baseboard and move lower to close the gap, but that would leave the cut line and paint/wall damage issue showing. The baseboards are pretty wide already so don’t think we can buy wider ones to cover up. Would dealing with wall fix be that big of a hassle. I understand this is a fix to avoid that.
Very good, thanks. ….from Ireland.
