What is the color of your wall behind you in this video ?

  2. Matt Rihs on September 13, 2022 at 4:58 am

Tip 4 (Don’t go too dark) is great advice. Nothing worse than going with a color with a super low LRV that looks great on a paint chip in a well-lit store, and getting home and painting it in a poorly-lit room with only one window, and not really seeing the color. Also, that sweater (from what I can see) is awesome. Kept having to refocus on the content, and not the sweater.

The Tenth Mistake: Putting up with a very old and tired paint job. Especially if the walls are Harvest Gold. ๐Ÿ˜„

Yes, bright colors are the worst. I enjoy a dark, moody, loungey vibe, especially with greyed, dusty tones. No color is too dark for me as long as there is lighter trim. I never pick color in a paint store. Am obsessed with my 2 Benjamin Moore color decks. I curve the swatch to eliminate the white border and hold it up to my eye while looking at the intended walls. Never a mistake yet. Thanks for your good list!

Awesome video and helpful tips – thank you. We are planning to paint our office and would like an energizing mood. Do you have a video that recommends energizing paint colours?

Iโ€™d have to add as the 10th, how one color can have a profound effect on another color. Pinks and creams, green tints and reds, etc.

I live in WNY and it’s blah, gray, tan like a third of the year. A friend suggested a sunny yellow with a celery green trim in our livingroom. Immediately changed my mood. And when it’s windchill of 0, it doesn’t feel so cold in here.. I look at the neutrals and just shudder. I guess I’m not going to be in fashion.

Why? Whyโ€™d you hide that chin dimple? Omg! So… I will leave it be, but no more face hair in my opinion!

If I want to try a lacquered ceiling look, can I "just" paint a high gloss polyurethane over the regular paint?

  10. Emerson Williams on September 13, 2022 at 5:06 am

It’s a myth that a dark color on all walls makes the room feel smaller…it can have the opposite effect, and make the walls recess. Several interior designers on here have said that, including some really good ones! It’s an old myth that needs to go away. You just have to know what you are doing. But otherwise, good video!

Hi, I am wanting a light silver grey wall colour to go with my white furniture. The style of the room is a modern minimalist Scandinavian look. My apartment is a east facing unit that sits behind a enclosed patio so itโ€™s a bit darker unit. Are their any suggestions on which colours will achieve a light silver grey rather than a blue wall under such conditions? The artificial lighting is on the warmer side between 2700-3000k. Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.๐Ÿ˜Š

I could never have beige walls. It’s like living in a cardboard box……

  13. MaryQuiteContrary on September 13, 2022 at 5:16 am

10th mistake IMO: That gray undertone. I find it depressing, not soothing. I like clean, clear tones, whether pastel or saturated.

What is that shade of purple that is shown? What brand, etc?

Great videos and info as usual.
But as cute as you are, would live to see more picture examples of the topic for longer periods of time and less of you.

I totally offended someone when I asked ‘what color are going to paint in here?’ The color looked like primer. I bright white& chalky.

  23. electricshoess on September 13, 2022 at 5:27 am

I’m not sure if this is a hard and fast rule but I try to make sure the colors from room to room dont clash- I like to have a little fun with the paint colors in the bedrooms but all colors look like they could at least be friends, if not in the same color pallette.

This is a great video. I bought my home brand new the end of 2008. The builder painted the walls AND the ceilings a "soft tan". Personally I am not a "colored ceiling" person and before I moved anything into the home I hired a painter to paint all the ceilings white. About 9 years ago I painted all the walls in the house a color called Bone. It’s time to repaint. The trouble I am having in my home is the lighting. At one point I was set on painting Revere Pewter but when I brought a paint chip home the chip took on different colors depending on what wall I held it up on and often times looked muddy. I am now thinking about trying to find the "right white" to paint all the walls and ceilings including having all the current interior white doors and baseboards resprayed the same new white color. Another issue I have in my home is all the wall corners are "bull nose" which in my own personal opinion means that if I were to paint a color other than white I have to paint the entire house that color. My personal opinion is I hate the look of when people try painting an accent wall and there is bull nose corners involved. There is no way to meet up two different colors on a bull nose. It looks like crap. I could paint a wall with inside corners an accent color but I don’t have a single wall downstairs that doesn’t have either a door or window on it which again personally I don’t think looks good. Just my own personal thoughts.

I didnt make one mistake choosing paint colors for my recent reno. This is my first time designing interior. Without any experience I avoided all your 9 mistakes. The outcome is super nice. I chose Knoxville Gray as bedroom wall color. The dark charcoal infused green blue is really calming for sleeping, much better than light colors. I use all BM paint, more expensive but I like the colors I picked and the paint quality.

  26. Artist's Touch Painting on September 13, 2022 at 5:29 am

Very well done on this one. Alot of this comes to over thinking or just straight up letting a designer go. I think it wise for it to be looked at as an art wich is subjective. Certain palates work in certain instances like you touched on. Ultimately it is left up to personal preference but these are great rules of thumb to avoid regret.

  27. Luiza Muller on September 13, 2022 at 5:32 am

Hi James. I appreciate your comments and suggestions. I’m wondering if you would answer a question for me. Our painter uses Benjamin Moore paint, but the colour I like is from Home Depot’s Marquee line (MQ3-28). Could BM colour match that? Thank you.

  28. Raya K on September 13, 2022 at 5:33 am

Awesome! But I thought the whole dark walls make a space look smaller thing was something that now interior designers are saying is a big myth. What are your thoughts on that? Also can you make a video about how to pull off white walls properly?

  29. Chris Ekstrom on September 13, 2022 at 5:34 am

Question on paint brands, to paint vinyl siding. In your experience which is the better for durability, Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams.

  30. Teresa Wasinger on September 13, 2022 at 5:34 am

Dark walls often recede, making the room seem larger.

I have a bedroom that I want to make into a crafting room there is a west facing window, would Agreeable gray be a good choice? also what would be a good trim to go with it?
