Lynyrd Skynyrd are the ultimate Southern Rock band. Their signature three guitar attack coupled to superb songwriting and massive on stage charisma has rightfully earned them a reputation as one of the greatest live bands of all time. The original band infamously had their career cut short by a disastrous plane crash in 1977 which took the lives of three members plus two of their road crew and seriously injured several others. In 1987 the surviving members reformed the band with Johnny Van Zant taking the place of his brother Ronnie. This concert from 1996 captures the band on top form at Rockpalast’s Loreley Festival on 23 June 1996.

This is merely a tribute band. Only one member of “The Lynard Skynyrd Band” is in this band, Gary Rossinigton. The lead singer of this pretend band is related to Ronnie Van Zant, but another pretender. Lynyrd Skynyrd died in a plane crash in July 20, 1977. Six people died in that crash. Sad that people Will pretend to be like the original in order to bring in cash. The Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Tour was a tour started in 1987, a ten year anniversary of the crash, that was undertaken to pay tribute to the original band members who died in a plane crash in 1977. And the tour was limited to a certain number of gigs. But so much money came in that they decided to keep it going to bring in cash. Ronnie Van Zants widow protested saying that after the crash they vowed to never play again. Besides they kept all the money and Ronnie’s widow was cut out of it. It even went to court.

I think this is just great. I know it’s not the original band, but the original band aint ever coming back and they died before I was even born. I would still pay money to see this every day of the week, I think it’s brilliant, it really does look like a great show, the music is perfect and the singing almost sounds like the original. I just got into LS from Youtube and I love them, and I would love to see the latest band iteration if they every come close to where I live.
