Set inside a 1970’s building and untouched for 50 years, Nicholas Gurney and his clients wanted to create something open, light and airy whilst retaining the 1960’s and early 1970’s retro sensibility.
The only change to the floorplan was removing the walls encapsulating the kitchen, making one large open space, and adding a breakfast bar come dining area which separates the kitchen from the living space. A function wall in the living room contains a built-in sofa with mirrored covered drawers underneath, which disappear and make the sofa appear lighter. A queen size murphy bed hidden above the sofa rests on the ottoman when down. In the kitchen, wrapped in Australian Blackwood, the closest local equivalent to teak, the clever use of a tambour door means the pantry can be concealed when not in use. The timber surfaces wrap around from the kitchen to the bathroom, where custom terrazzo tiles cover the floor and small mosaic tiles on the walls directly reference the original kitchen tiles found in the apartment.

As more regimes follow the CCP,s utopia for us, and weld us into our apartments, this would be a lovely cell to starve to death.
This is a masterclass in using natural light to its fullest, and I like the idea of using mirrored surfaces near ground level .
My only real critique is that the Murphy bed seems kind of rickety. Seems to me like you’d want the support ottoman to be the full width of the bed, and something heavier/ unlikely to scoot around
Is this an apartment or a condo? Perhaps the terminology is different there because where I live a you own a condo and you rent an apartment. You would only renovate a property you own like a condo. This designer did a great job at listening and tailoring to the client needs.
This is impeccably designed, well done!
Wow this makes me want to get rid of all my stuff! It’s such a peaceful space. I love it!
It is 1950s TO 1980s not 1950s "through" 1980s. Basic errors like this spoiled an otherwise excellent video.
Love this apartment!
Simple color and stuff behind cabinet doors
Minimalists always seem like the most boring people on earth. No hobbies or interests and the house is like a sterile hospital.
Why unashamedly? Should we be ashamed of being minimalist?
To me the most unexpected and surprising feature of this space is the Pittsburgh Steelers jersey in the wardrobe.
Just Loved to watch how you designed your dream house, I had to comment as your house is Outstanding.
Love from 🇮🇳
love this one
Love the kitchen!
I will pay this man good money to take the question marks off of the end of his sentences?
Great job
I like an ENCLOSED kitchen…..and I certainly don’t want my guests 2C, let alone eat next 2 my messy (They almost always are) kitchen SINK….🙄
Absolutely beautiful and practical for today’s living without waste!!! Thank you for sharing these important ideas!👏💯👍
Can anyone tell me the exact name (architectural name to be precise) of the storage door in the kitchen please? huge fan of that detail
Feels like traveling in time, nice!!
This! It is so incredibly well thought out. Good job 🙏🏻
It looked bigger in the before
wow! Stunning!
This would great if there was an actual bed room
It’s otherwise well thought out and executed, but I have reservation for the pullout bed. Especially that there’s already a big sofa in place. I think it would make better sense to have sofa/sofa bed for day/night transition. It will also save precious wall space (pullout bed is undoubtedly bulky) and provide some display/storage for above/behind sofa. It’s just my thinking, what do you think?
Love to see an appropriate sized induction cooktop in smaller homes ..(brand details would be very appreciated). A fantastic outcome, Nicholas Gurney and team.
not a big fan of that wardrobe even though the yellow brings that touch of colour.
But I can’t imagine where else you’d put your clothes
This one truly is a tiny, tiny apartment!
The sofa is really ugly, the material looks very cheap and out of style. The rest of the apartment is beautiful.
100k a square metre. Sydney is cooked.
This is not an apartment. It is a cupboard.
This was is my favourite
Minimalist is boring 🤪😋😛😜😝
I need information on that folding chair!
Great, great details – well done.
i’m curious about how much it cost to go from Before to After
Kind of unrealistic. What about majority of people renting in Sydney who can’t change their layouts, or people who live in apartments smaller than this? This is more of a dream than reality.
This cost a grip.
The island looks heavy, and eats up on the negative space
Very well done, minimal but not cold. Love the color scheme that was chosen.
How wish I had money for a Murphy bed for my 33msq flat. I could save so much space. But thx to NTS, I’ve found a good balance to being spacious but still have enough closets to hide stuff
Excellent design
I can’t do mustard but excellently done.
One thing, under the bed, is it sturdy?
Hello from Greece 🇬🇷
I’m really interested in your apartment, I love the design and that it’s not ‘over designed’.
One question.
Is cork durable enough;
I personally feel the area dedicated to the kitchen is far too much in proportion to the sqm of the place. Plenty of layout options – given the opportunity with plumbing etc I would have relocated the kitchen to the opposite wall
I love how <30 sq m can feel roomy and open.
Also, anyone else find this channel’s videos oddly relaxing? I think it’s the music and soft way the architect or flat owners usually narrate each episode.
Beautiful 🖤
It’s beautiful, but just not my style. I wouldn´t put my books under or near the kitchen’s sink…..
Would have loved to see the balcony as well
