A few months ago, our first USA holiday home on wheels went up in flames.. and after a brief trip home to regroup, we’re back in the USA and ready to start looking for our replacement camper van!
In this NYC travel vlog, we finally arrive back in the USA and continue our search for the perfect van/RV. We look at two very different campervans – one vintage rv and one newer, self-build van. We give a full tour of each van, and discuss whether or not we have found the perfect van for us.

Out of the two shown here, the dodge camper is the better choice. As far as age goes, as long as the young man took his time restoring it, I wouldn’t be scared of it. Send it to a reputable rv inspection shop, let them go over it completely. I think it’s a good option.
I don’t think either one of those vans are good choices for you. Buy something newer than the first one, and have a mechanic check it out thoroughly. And keep in mind that any vans in the Northeast should be garaged in winter so they’re not rusty.
so I live I central ny abut 4 hours from NYC I found a great calsss c about an hour out of Albany this year. I found that the places in the country ppl will keep their vehicles barn kept and well perserved
I would be forever traumatized by the year 1987 … no on van #1
Welcome back to the US! When you look at vehicles in the northeast (or anywhere really), make sure you look underneath for rust or rot no matter how good the body looks. Also check for corrosion in case it was in a flood. Be patient and good luck with your search👍👍
Good luck 👍
Ayy nyc Brooklyn my home town/city I’m used to nyc driving born bread raised up here in nyc
1st Van is great. New York means Rust!!! Be careful.
Hello Guys,
Love your channel and glad you’re back in the U.S. to give it another go. Here are some thoughts. Don’t go with either of these lot. Too old too small.
Check out Patrick on the You Tube channel, New Jersey Outdoors Adventures, right up your alley!!! Here’s the bonus, he is ALSO the sales manager of Colonial Airstream in MIllstone township, New Jersey. Not far from Manhattan. The owners, two brothers, Jim and John Lenzo are absolutely the most fantastic people. Perhaps, You Tube wise something could be worked out. Give it a go, blimey, what do you have to lose? I would love if this could work out for all of you.
Best regards,
David Reading
Keep in mind if you want to stay at most of the national parks you can’t have a pop-up it’s got to be solid siding because of the wild life
I’d say no to the second one, just because you couldn’t stand up – that would get old quick. 1st one looked ok. Seems your gun shy on h]the old ones-don’t blame you on that at all. Get an inspection Before you buy! A must- because of rust from salty air over there. Also ate of vehicles. Good luck!
Can’t go wrong with anything built on the dodge platform as parts are readily available. The small block LA series engines are strong engines. Unlike other comments, the 360 has more torque and better suited than the 318 for Rv’s and gets better gas mileage. Stick with the dodge or chevy platforms. Check my channel, several vlogs on my 1999 Dakota, nearly exact same platform as that dodge rv you looked at. Network of Dodge dealerships across the country who can still work on the dodge rv’s if you needed service. Wealth of knowledge on the dodge platforms here if you need it…Best of luck cheers.
Not sure I’d by a van 35 years old . . . . the engine in that thing is a mystery, and remember that engine is 35 years old
The blue van is entirely too small and cramped. The 1987 van is quite nice, I would want to know how many miles it has on it and what’s been done mechanically. Keep in mind fuel economy! It won’t do you any favors if you get a good sale price but it ends up being a gas hog! AC is a must unless you strictly follow the seasons on your travels, even then humidity can be a problem and you will have a difficult time sleeping. Make sure whatever you buy doesn’t end up being lipstick on a pig. Personally I like the look of old short school buses. What about new or close to new at a dealers? You could have a substantial down payment. If you could handle a payment?
To repeat what you probably already know, you’re purchasing two systems – a vehicle and the RV built on it. After you get your selected vehicle checked out as a vehicle, get the RV systems checked out for safety (e.g. propane lines to the ‘fridge, electrical etc ). Admire your nerve.
There’s nothing better than a Dodge. I vote for van #1. I’ve owned Dodge vans for years, and they are super reliable. My 1992 Dodge has 276,000 miles on it, and it has never let me down. I had a 1974 Dodge van before the 1992, and it was still running great with 330,000 miles on it. If it hadn’t have gotten totaled in an accident (I got rear ended at a traffic light), I’d probably still have it.
I feel like this 1987 model is less problematic, because the owner has renovated it and has used it on a regular basis very recently. The other one just spent time in storage perhaps?
No way could I get the 1987 model after what happened. Also, wear and tear on a van in the US obviously will be much higher than the UK just based on mileage alone. The blue van was too small. Not being able to stand up would be intolerable in about 3 days lol. I would get the newest one I could, and I would have to have a decent sized dinette – you need to be able to work comfortably. Plus that’s a bed for baby bean. 😊 Good luck with your search, I can’t wait to see what you choose!
Have you considered looking at another T4 but the american version, The VW Eurovan Camper? It’s a long nose T4 already converted by Winnebago.
The first one was definitely the best and still fits you two. So unfortunate that they couldn’t diagnose what went wrong with Frank so you could know what to have checked on that new one. Hope everything works out and cant wait to see what you guys pick!
Guys, don’t be cheap. Sounds like you got a decent amt of money from the insurance and GoFundMe. I know you want to save some for gas and customizing, but go for newer w/the best engine you can afford. Eric and Allison redid their whole engine and still have problems. Also, like the other commenter said, check-out RV/boat storage facilities to see if you can luck out buying a nice RV on the cheap.

👍
The frist van….l just trust the guy that’s selling….the frist van…….but how much are they they?…..price?
I have a 2000 Rv so I would be comfortable with age if it checks out good. But be careful you were ready lucky with Frank!
Keep looking. You’ll find it
First one was a good size but only 10miles a gallon you would need a good bank account to keep it topped up the second one no its to small for you keep looking there’s one out there for you get one with good mileage as you are going to travel 😉 🥰xx
Love your Pimpmobile at the end!
I would not have even looked at your second. An L3H3 Ford Transit is barely high enough, and sleeping across it is not going to work for me. I’m 190cm tall.
Please convert American Measure to metric. I never can remember the conversion rate US gal to litres, and our gallons, before we abandoned them, were bigger. I remember an eight gallon fuel tank, and I remember 45 gallon drums of fuel. Those drums are about 200l.
I always go back to the first one! Wonder if you will too😊
I swear that is where Maverick was parked just a week or so ago (Van Alley). Check his last video! I know that you had a rough experience in Texas but you are going to get quite a bit more for your money in Texas than in NY. Not in Austin perhaps, but in other areas. The south in general is basically just cheaper.
No to both. The first one was great BUT too old. Realistically you need reliability for a lot of traveling. I say buy newer van and just not go for all the fancy stuff to keep cost lower. Why van? Why not truck and add camper or travel trailer. Reliability a must.❤️❤️Welcome to USA..Be cautious..
Loved the first van. It’s like a little tiny house.
Be very careful when looking to buy an older rv on the east coast!
what a fun adventure! I wouldnt buy anything from earlier than about 2001
I would check to see if the 1987 van has an air-cooled engine. I’m not much of a van expert, but based on what I’ve been told, a lot of older vans and buses used air-cooled engines and that can cause overheating and other problems. Just an idea.
Can we officially call the future new bean a "Baby Bean"?
Thanks for bringing us along on your van shopping, I love looking at all the different layouts and how people set things up. So far I like van #1. We have a little dog named Beans so now we always say Beans Out! when he runs into another room 🙂
Have a mechanic check out the engine. And don’t be afraid to ask the seller if he has done any work on the engine. Ask for paper work.
Yeap, they did a video last November, you can see that same guy in the Van Alley at the beginning of the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlBUfZYzeM8
I saw this guy talk to maverick on his channel about selling this van thats funny he was just there aswell
Run away from that second one
Great to see you guys back! I believe your better off searching in the southwest in order to avoid rust issues. Keep the search going 👍.
I think you’d probably want to head south to find something and away from the Salt water of the ocean. Good luck!
1st van looks great on the inside.
Too old and then too small. Beyond being able to live in it … reliability is key! The US is a big place and often not easy to get assistance if you break down.
Van #1 looks perfect!
HI GUYS, I love your channel, my wife and I have been avid RV travelers since the 1990s. I see that you are looking for a van to explore the USA with and you asked or input. My wife’s family came to Canada from England and we have been there for a visit, loved it. A few tips from a fellow traveler, the USA and Canada are huge compared to the UK, you can travel for hours and never see a town or gas station. Point number 1, fuel economy is a big deal. Unlike the UK, we in North America are willing and do travel long distances at times. Now this is not to say to give up comfort and livability for MPG but it is a factor. Camping off grid or as we call it boon docking is a big deal here so get something that you do not need constant connection to support. (solar panels and a composting toilet are really an asset.) A shower is a must, there are alternatives such as a shower tent that you can put up in a very short time and do offer privacy. Air conditioning is a must, no compromise. Size matters, get something that you will be comfortable in. Look for a decent size water tank. An awning is a must have. Diesel motors stand up much better for long trips on the road and are usually much more fuel efficient. I could go on and on, we recently started a youtube channel about our RV life and now that we are retired we will be able to put some great content starting on Vancouver Island, our home and wow is it beautiful here. In case you are interested it is at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNLqAAwk7HkE5THVAswmZaw . ( Island Adventures with Ken and Bettina) Good luck with your purchase, contact me with any questions that you may have about my advise.
Get out of New York !
Not a safe place to walk anywhere!!!!
Safe travels guys –
A Florida van is a no. A California van defiantly a yes. California has many other enviromental laws than any other state. One that has been in Pennsylvania I would absolutely look for rust! Any state that has snow and salt will be that way.
