The Living Room Jungle Episode | Rare Plant Tour | Collector-Seller Series P8 | Ep 57

I visited Socaltropics (on Instagram and eBay), a husband and wife duo with 17 years plant experience in San Diego, California. They have been collecting, growing, propagating, and selling houseplants for 17 years and have a rare plant collection that will blow your mind, especially their variegated monstera species. Even more impressive is their practical, economical, and minimalist approach to plants and plant care routine (plant care tips abound!).

They have so many wonderful plants and seem such a warm and sweet couple. I especially like that the plants are displayed in pretty planters and intricate macrame hangers.

  2. Pru-Pruh on June 29, 2022 at 10:35 pm

Jimmy at 12:20 "I’m really not a pink plant person…" but the heart-eye emoji in his voice betrays him. 😀

Speaking to us from his living area I noticed Jimmy’s eyes quite red. Jimmy were you partaking in smoking one of your planted friends or did you have a rough night? 😎

  17. blueovalgal on June 29, 2022 at 10:58 pm

  26. David Day on June 29, 2022 at 11:01 pm

We wre wondering where the Monstera Deliciosa Variegata (LARGE) leave in the video was? You would think that if they are in the business for over 17 years, they’d have one. 😔
    Nobody really talks about that!

  27. Epiphyte on June 29, 2022 at 11:03 pm

Thanks for the tour! Awesome collection! The Dischidia looks like Dischidia formosana.

  28. Laurie Nash on June 29, 2022 at 11:04 pm

  29. MANUEL CERVANTES on June 29, 2022 at 11:05 pm

Hey! amazing episode. is there any problem with the kidney (the calcium oxalate crystals) bc of the monsteras in home??

  30. Chris's Garden Pyle on June 29, 2022 at 11:08 pm

OH my keeping kitties out of your plants. I have raised three kittens to 2 years old. Now the largest one is 18 pounds, and still growing, and can leap from the floor almost 6 foot to the top shelf of my living room plant stand. I wired in safety rails because kitties also like to knock plant pots off shelves. He is a brute. I just got word yesterday a friend of mine is going to let me have one of her old iron parrot cages. Going to put it on the dining room table. LOL I also lined up a row of snake plants across the bottom front and sides of the cabinet the plant stand sits on. AND put double sided carpet sticky tape all along my window sills. Not sure what the sticky tape would do to your couch fabric. Might work to keep them off. Good luck and if you find a magic cure let me know. Crazy thing is the kittes pay no attention to the plants on the kitchen counter plant stand. I also put rails on it.

I have really enjoyed this series and SoCal Tropics.

  31. LAJA ROX on June 29, 2022 at 11:10 pm

Another enjoyable episode…congrats. Question, didn’t you have the Fish Tail Hoya for sale on your Etsy shop at some time not long ago??

    I love syngoniums too

  34. Jan Kennard on June 29, 2022 at 11:14 pm

The pink syngonium is so awsome.

  35. Chee Sim on June 29, 2022 at 11:15 pm

I do agree Syngonium is a little underrated, which is great, then the price is more affordable 😆 I recently got a S. Auretum, I love how odd the leaf shape is and it is growing so well!

  36. Allison on June 29, 2022 at 11:18 pm

    Syngoniums are my FAVORITE

  37. Roxana S. on June 29, 2022 at 11:20 pm

Absolutely amazing! Thank you for sharing🤩

  38. The Garden Hoe on June 29, 2022 at 11:23 pm

Such an impressive collection. And they dont have a speck of dirt on the floor!! 😱

Ooooh. That syngonium is gorgeous. A wendlandii I believe. That and rayii are on my wish list 😁 And now Jade and Scrambled Eggs too thanks to seeing their plants! Lol.

Thanks for this series Jimmy! Wonderful! 🌿🤩

  39. Jamie B on June 29, 2022 at 11:23 pm

Awesome vid! What is the screen they place on their pots? What an amazing collection. Thank you for sharing another great video Jim.

  40. Suðrænheilladís on June 29, 2022 at 11:23 pm

Did you asked why they put the moss on the soilsurface?

  41. Tracy,s Tropical greenhouse on June 29, 2022 at 11:24 pm

    Another great video.

  42. Cheryl Anne on June 29, 2022 at 11:24 pm

Stay well, Jimmy! Those NICU babies need you. We just have a NICU baby in our family, but he is out now and doing so well. Gaining weight like a maniac!

  43. Teddy Teddie on June 29, 2022 at 11:25 pm

I really don’t like the emphasize on value, rarity, how it is highly sought after and so forth. The new word for 2021 could be plant snobs. Just enjoying plants and share with friends has turned into ridiculous prices, auctions on Facebook and people showing of plants and just want to make money. It brings out the worst in some people.

  44. Cheryl Faulkner on June 29, 2022 at 11:30 pm

I’m beyond impressed with this. So lovely!!

  45. Sterl Girl on June 29, 2022 at 11:30 pm

  46. Elizabeth M on June 29, 2022 at 11:31 pm

    Really nice Series

  47. Andrei N on June 29, 2022 at 11:31 pm

Love syngoniums too. I’ve got four species/

  48. Vanessa Carroll on June 29, 2022 at 11:31 pm

I have a Peperomia Elongata and I love it! I just ordered a Jade Syngonium but it hasn’t come in the mail yet. I ordered it from Glasshouse Works so, it may be awhile. I just love their living room. My house has a ton of plants too and I am working out incorporating them throughout the house. It’s not an easy job.

  49. Russell Evans on June 29, 2022 at 11:31 pm

Great video Jimmy ,thanks so much . Looking forward to the next one . Have a great weekend .

  50. Silver C. on June 29, 2022 at 11:31 pm

Most of my syngoniums are doing great but one is struggling and I don’t know what it wants from me 😭
