here is a long long list of things you need and things you definitely don’t need for college. if you’re a freshman moving out to university for your first time, here’s the advice for you, whether you’re residing in a dorm or your own apartment. packing for this is pretty difficult so i hope this helps you with your move-in/move-out process.

you’re so pretty ♥️
I brought 1 bowl a fork and spoon. I just washed it the moment I was done. Thar worked best for me. As for the books, yes if you are going into stem wait. But if it’s a humanities or arts, literature, language etc. You’ll need the book. I have always needed the book except for my hard science classes i.e. astronomy.
Do you need a printer?
To add to the printer thing printer ink is also hella expensive
I saved this video year ago and now I am moving to dorm next month and I am so grateful that I did this! Thank you for all hacks! I forgot kettle on my list and I throw away everything that I didn’t need on my list
A friend of mine gave me a package of detergent sheets. Basically they are squares of solid detergent soap that dissolves in the wash. Saves on the weight and mess of liquid detergent, I have probably a whole semesters worth in a bag the size of a tablet.
People say leave stuff at home, but my parents are moving so I’ll have to do something with my stuff
Printers I say depends on your major a lot. If you need to print all your worksheets for class along with printing off notes, finished assignments, etc it does come in handy. You can get a cannon printer for $30, they are small, ink is $25 and I only had to replace it 2 times all year. Print things in greyscale when possible and it helps save ink as well
this video made me very glad i chose to live in an apartment my freshman year
what’s the website / chrome extension at 5:23 ? i have been looking for it forever
about the giant detergent container: you could use a reusable condiment squeeze bottle thing to transport a smaller amount to the room? Like the bottles on a table at some restaurants, or maybe some kinds of glue
So as a kid in foster care who doesn’t have a family. I am bringing literally everything I own with me because I have nowhere else to put it. I don’t know what to do…
This is a year late but a printer is useful depending on your major, most do not need to bring it but even so in my major of architecture we still have to go to custom print shops due to the size but we also had to print alot of the lecture references as well. I say double check and purchase if you need it later in the semester instead.
I have to disagree about dishes. I ate SO many meals in my dorm room and drank so many cups of tea, and not having to go to the dining hall for cutlery or a mug was so nice. Just don’t bring 2 of everything, and learn how to wash your dishes ASAP lol.
I love most of this, however, I do believe some of this is course specific. I’m a film student, without my Mac desktop I would struggle as a laptop is simply not powerful enough for some of the projects I undertake while at Uni. Obviously she’s not saying you must follow her advice so this is not hate, just a note. If you honestly fully believe it will benefit your course, bring it as she is only talking from her specific experience, as I and everyone else in this comment section is 🙂
When integrated graphics gets shout-out but dedicated doesn’t 🥲
I’m going to attend the Disney College Program soon and this was super helpful. I’ve never had to go away for college before (community college was my main standby), so I really wanted to make sure I wasn’t overpacking- which I tend to do.
Thank youuu I’m moving to study abroad in the next months and I’m thinking about doing my dorm shopping there
One thing that I think is essential is some lighting alternative to the overhead light. The overhead light is very harsh, especially when waking up/going to sleep. I just have a warm desk lamp that makes my room way cozier
I love how honest you are!
Hears another thing Relate to the don’t get textbooks before classe start
Some proffsers send out emails/ tell everyone to look threw the book before the semester starts
If that say to do that but the books before class because you will be using them
Other than that wait a week or two
Don’t bring that many clothes. Seriously I brought soooo many clothes I didn’t need and didn’t use.
I know this was over a year ago however, for those that do bring candles with them and can’t light them bring a candle warmer/mug warmer can still use your candle for there yummy scents ❤️
Tide pods might not melt if your school has old washers. Liquid detergent is your best bet
As a nursing major, the textbook thing usually applies, but it NEVER applies in lab! Always always ALWAYS buy the materials for lab!!
Lovely and useful video!
I do have to add a caveat to your Tide pod suggestion. In every one of my 4 dorm/apartments through college, the washers provided were not strong enough to dissolve the Tide pod and I would be left with the clear packaging on my clothes! Just a. fair warning.
Instead of a wax melter to make my dorm smell nicer, should I just bring febreze?
watching this as a highschooler 🥸
So I’m bring my ESA and he’s a larger dog, What all should I bring for him?? I know the basics like bowls, toys, leash, harness and collar, and maybe a cage for when I’m in class. What else do you think I would need for him?
I’m not going back to dorms. Probably ever. I don’t know why I’m watching this
Me: watching this video when I am not even close to college
As a Brit who drinks an abhorrent amount of tea, a electronic kettle is an absolute necessity for every single household. To the point where when she said "bring a kettle" I was confused because the student accommodation over here literally INCLUDES them. Like the way they provide stoves and fridges, they provide kettles 🤷🏻♀️
why am i watching this AFTER packing
I will only be staying 3 days a week at the dorm so I really don’t need that much things, but being aware of all this will actually help me a lot when I actually move in.
On your thumbnail you look like a baby
OK so, I just recently got into the Singapore Sports School, and there are dorms there. But, the 1st years are 13 years old and I don’t know if this is going to be relevant when I move into the small dorms. Any advice?
If you have issues with physical health, executive dysfunction or just mental health in general, keep the reusable dishes on you but have a pack of disposable compostable dishes too.
Disposable dishes can add up in your budget so take care of that before spending money on this.
But also, if you have any issues like the ones mentioned above, college is going to drain the life out of you. And you will not want to do the dishes.
I don’t hate doing dishes. For me it’s the easiest job in the world.
But we have a shared bathroom in our hostel and a sink (for washing dishes etc) downstairs. I can’t tell you how dirty the dishes got while I tried to muster the courage to wash them.
Some had to be even thrown away because we have a humid kinda environment and fungus would start growing while i couldn’t wash them. A few times it happened, I washed the dishes, dried them, treated them with disinfectants, washed and dried again. But a couple utensils kept getting mold so much that throwing them away seemed the better option.
louie zong music
The intro made me laugh so hard!🤣
Hello, I love your video 🙂 Just posted a new one if you’d like to check it out 🙂 Have a wonderful summer day 🙂
Not the dishes 🙁
Thanks a lot for this!!!
Seeing that your string lights are near paper posters ; please make sure they’re not getting too warm and becoming a fire hazard ! <3
me watching this on the laptop she advertised: ;-;
DO bring a printer: When you have a essay or some arbitrary task that requires printouts: do get one! The most frustrating thing you can do at campus is rely on a "printer being online" or "has enough paper" or "has enough ink" and you need your work "Today Martha" DO NOT waste your time relying on the printers on campus to be working: because you will be in queues, find that your work is printed wrong and SO MUCH MORE! Bring your own, F these cheap overly sized machines that should be in the garbage bin.
Cool Asian girl 😎
thank you, ive been having so much anxiety moving into my dorm.. i needed a reminder that im not gonna be changing my whole life
Watching Americans use a kettle is my worst nightmare. #teachtheamericanshowtouseakettle
me a junior watching this as if i was a freshman
I’ve been in college for 5 years, what am I doing here
