There was an abundance of bad taste in the ’70s in America.

  2. Sean Echon on March 29, 2023 at 8:54 am

I remember getting my butt paddled with the wall spoons. Lol!

  3. Litgal78 on March 29, 2023 at 8:54 am

Don’t forget the cake pan copper molds that people hung up for decoration.

  4. Simon Bernstein on March 29, 2023 at 8:55 am

OMG! I’ve croaked and gone to heaven. Fantastic but, not to nitpick but y’all neglected two staples of the era. Those Big Eyed pics of kids, doggies and kittens. And for the fortunate few one of those fancy 70’s organs that did ecerything from tiopany to Tuba to wawa pedal.

  5. Nutty_Bara on March 29, 2023 at 8:58 am

Besides the shag my grandmother’s house still has most of this stuff in it.

I remember a TV console we bought at Grants in PA. Had to be almost 7′ long w/ a record player on 1 side and a cassette/radio on the other with a 25" TV in the middle. It had to weigh 250-300lbs.
My dad hung some Radio Shack speakers outside on the porch during Christmas to play music while we watched TV inside. On a visit to the town where both sets of my grandparents lived, 1 grandmother taught me how to do MacroMay using jute and yarn to make hanging plant holders w/ decorative inserts. To me those were the best years of my life, living in Souderton w/ a population around 14k and being able to ride your bike, skate board or walk anywhere w/o our parents worrying about anything was great. We’d find ourselves up to 3 miles away exploring but knew when lunch/dinner was served if we weren’t there we were grounded. In the summertime after dinner 10-15 kids on the block raging in ages of 8-17 would play kickball, softball or touch football by Shelly and Fenstemacher’s lumber yard. Their lumber yard with no fencing made for great army/cowboy-indians duels. I am so grateful for my life @ 60, I wish so many other kids had
that chance of love in their homes and neighborhoods today. HE double hockey stick in a hand basket today.

When the Big furniture sized TV set quit working, you’d buy a new smaller one and place it on top of the big piece of furniture tv set.

  8. Baughbe on March 29, 2023 at 9:02 am

Lets see, had the TV and for while the cabinet stereo but the stereo got replaced with the newer modular units as fixing a stereo like that was a problem in our area. The TV repair man didn’t do stereos. Had the wood paneling, shag carpets, brassware. Also common of the time but not on this video were wooden wall hanging candle holders. That was a common project in boy scouts at the time and homes got filled with those. Another missed item was the China Cabinet. Full of stuff that didn’t even get used for holidays as any chance of breakage had to be avoided. And don’t forget the joke coffee mugs with the ceramic frog in the bottom of the cup. Just waiting for the unsuspecting guest to drink down that far. And somewhere in most homes, you had that most diligent of home protectors: the Pet Rock. The miniature Grandfather clock, with the number in Roman Numerals. Not electric, it had to be wound once a week. A piano and/or electric organ. Even if nobody played either.

my mom was a poverty induced hoarder and so we kept that big tv and used it as stand for our other slightly more modern big back tv

  10. D S on March 29, 2023 at 9:03 am

We had everything on your list except for the fireplace and paneling. I made ever relative in the area a granny square afghan and made tons of macrame purses with fringe . I still have a stereo that I put plants on.

    Miss the 70 and .80

  12. J Rnfw on March 29, 2023 at 9:07 am

My folks had brass figurines in our living room. I still have some brass in our current china closet, a holdover from the 70s. Polished brass is elegant. I don’t think it ever really goes out of style.

  13. Ned Ludd on March 29, 2023 at 9:08 am

Neither my parents house nor the various places I lived had any of this stuff. My parents had good wood floors and never installed carpeting. I can safely say that I have lived in a place with carpets.

  14. Lavenderflowers Fall on March 29, 2023 at 9:14 am

I liked the wood paneling. You could always find images in it and my grandmother had a flag stone fireplace (I don’t know the actual term) never used it but it was always neat to have.

They even had the little stand with the brushes and things to sweep the ashes out.

I grew up in the 90s but we also did have shag carpet. When I was a little kid and early 90s one was red and the other was blue. I moved from the "Red Room" to the bigger "Blue Room" when I was about 9 or 10.

At one point in the early 2000’s, I even put up some plastic door beads that my mom bought for me.

Of course in my later teens we bought a new house and my grandma redid her house after a fire (which my dad thinks she calls because he wouldn’t pay enough attention to her after getting a girlfriend I don’t know) but I definitely prefer the more minimalistic 90s then the high-tech air fryers and microsuede and leather the 2020s.

Of course now my dad’s buying a brand new house so hey.

Parsons tables. Plastic, square, with interlocking removable legs…

  16. Reading is FUNDAMENTAL! on March 29, 2023 at 9:15 am

Proud owner of that wooden, giant knife and spoon. . I even deliberately purchased two (;!!!)😆), of a smaller, metal version that I painted white! LOVE it 😂😂😂

  17. Tob1Kadach1 on March 29, 2023 at 9:16 am

Ahh Shag Carpet, making British People laugh since the 70’s. Shag means to have sex in the UK.

  18. Magere Hein on March 29, 2023 at 9:16 am

Ah yes, bean bag chairs. I had one made of vinyl; brown of course.

  19. Margaret Briefs on March 29, 2023 at 9:16 am

In the late sixties my parents switched our furniture and accessories to a Spanish inspired ‘Man of la Mancha’
look, including a pole lamp with three hanging Spanish looking globes… we thought we were so ‘tough’ (which meant COOL) in those days.

  20. Mary Jo Eckenrode on March 29, 2023 at 9:17 am

Thank god we don’t smoke anymore!

  21. AmericanMade1964 on March 29, 2023 at 9:18 am

We had those console tvs. Omg and a tinfoil Christmas tree with a spinning light thingy under it. Watched channel 20 scary movies and my older brothers always scared the crap outta me.

  22. Some Buddy on March 29, 2023 at 9:19 am

    "Stereo system" and "TV Sets"

  23. linda chandler on March 29, 2023 at 9:21 am

Where in the world did the writer get such a silly idea that ‘everybody’ had these?

  24. Bruce Dodd on March 29, 2023 at 9:23 am

What went wrong I liked the Console Tv
    It looked so neet

  25. Niftynorm1 on March 29, 2023 at 9:24 am

A lot of these were from the 60’s not the 70’s.

  26. Zaza Krall on March 29, 2023 at 9:25 am

The shag rake had me laughing. I actually had a vacuum attachment that was a rake with small holes at the end of each tyne. , made of metal and heavy

  27. FefferRyerr on March 29, 2023 at 9:26 am

we didn’t have a single one of these things, but friends did.

  28. J Rnfw on March 29, 2023 at 9:27 am

The furniture of the 70s was just plain BEAUTIFUL! All of that ornate wood was very aesthetically pleasing. It was an era where beauty and color was appreciated. Not so much, today, sadly.

  29. Missy Faith on March 29, 2023 at 9:27 am

I’m gen x but my mother had horrible taste in decorating. She made me hate the colors orange, yellow, green and brown. The house was hideous. The only room that didn’t have those hideous colors was mine, once I was in elementary school on. Guess I was lucky that I developed my own style VS her hideous style. My sister even stuck with the yellow and green. I don’t know why but I can’t stand those colors and don’t want them in any place I intend on living in.

Im only 37, but I recollect many of these items. It brings back so many memories that I can actually remember smells from some of these shots. Lol

  31. J Rnfw on March 29, 2023 at 9:28 am

The live indoor plants at that time needed LOTS AND LOTS of BRIGHT LIGHT in order to thrive. They had to be situated in front of a huge picture window or on a window sill on the side of the house that got the most sunlight. Otherwise, no amount of watering or fertilizing would keep them alive, if there wasn’t sufficient light. I found that out very fast when I tried to keep them in my small apartment.

  32. Nerval1855 on March 29, 2023 at 9:30 am

Oh, the owls. As soon as you mentioned it, my memory fired. Granny had one.

  33. Desert Rose on March 29, 2023 at 9:31 am

3 inches was the max length for shag carpeting… 4 inches would never have been even possible to rake. I know, we shopped for shag and had the rake. If there were any 4 inch carpets Im sure they were not for the common home.

  34. Kim14 berly88 on March 29, 2023 at 9:32 am

So much of this brings me back especially the floor tv and glass ashtray on a stand. My dad’s mom had one and it was always full of cigarette butts and they chainsmoked and had deep Smokey voices. Dead now!

  35. Lynn Smith on March 29, 2023 at 9:32 am

I still have the shag carpet in one room that my grandma updated to in the 70s. I still have the brass house-shaped key holder too! Shocking to see my key holder in a video!

  37. Mike Jones on March 29, 2023 at 9:35 am

was born in 65, we had big TVs but no SHAG Carpet, absolutely gross! Smoking, shag carpet and pets…eeech I can smell it going into my friends house. Glad when all that crap was gone.

  38. Michael S on March 29, 2023 at 9:35 am

I wish I was back then…. not in this disgusting world we now live in .

    Wheres the string art?

  40. Cate A on March 29, 2023 at 9:38 am

a lot of this stuff was found at import stores in malls. spent hours in them as a teen. also learned macrame and making terrariums with large glass bottles and small plants. metal art in school to hang on the wall. good memories

  41. William Evans on March 29, 2023 at 9:40 am

Four-inch long shag carpets? Wow! I hope no-one had to rake their floor to recover a lost hamster or pet mouse! Re beanbag chairs – were they actually ever comfortable, or did people ‘tolerate’ them just to be in fashion?

  45. willardroad on March 29, 2023 at 9:47 am

Holy heck, you nailed my childhood. One thing you showed, but did not actually mention, was the wood paneling EVERYWHERE. Mostly fake, sometimes real, everyone wanted it. Our house was done in real, actual wood all over – even in wood panels on the ceiling!

  46. Diesel Bronco on March 29, 2023 at 9:50 am

I missed the 70’s (born in ’82) but having been raised by my grandparents and great grandmother I remember all this because that’s what was in their houses. I still have my great grandmothers console stereo and it still works great!

  47. Margaret Briefs on March 29, 2023 at 9:51 am

I remember periodically polishing the wooden wall paneling.

  48. 5jerry1 on March 29, 2023 at 9:51 am

    ~ Macrame, not "MacroMay."

  49. Kev Macc on March 29, 2023 at 9:51 am

Shag carpeting was disgusting, there was no way to keep it clean. It was like covering your floor with a dirty sweater.

  50. Heather Spence on March 29, 2023 at 9:51 am

Thanks to your video, at 39 years old, I am finally able to identify what is an antique platter that is brass. Well, it will be once I get some cleaner after I finish the video lol. I’ve only messed with it once about 20 years ago with a little bit of CLR, and then I was afraid of damaging it and left it in a box. That is most definitely what it is.
