This 250-Square-Foot NYC Studio Is Exactly What Apartment Therapy Is All About | House Tours

After living in Tokyo for a few years, Nonprofit Fundraising Consultant Melissa Chang moved back to New York City and has been living in this 250 square foot studio apartment for about a year. Melissa describes her style as cozy, vintage, nostalgic, Asian and American.

“I got lucky and found my studio on StreetEasy right at the start of 2021 — still at the time when everyone was leaving the city because of COVID and rents were down for a very brief spell,” she writes. “I love that my studio has a wall of windows, so even though this place is under 250 square feet, it feels bright and airy.”

Very nice & personal but the 2nd small apt without a TV. Plus was there a closet for coats, dresses…?

  3. Juanita Sullivan on October 14, 2022 at 6:48 am

Love this space. One of the best ones yet. What she said at the end is so true. Take your time making your nest. Make it fit you and no one else. I moved back to Canada after living in the US most of my life after being adopted from here. I was lucky enough to find a small A Frame cottage overlooking a lake to rent and I’m still here 12 years later. I had nothing but personal things when I moved in. Went to Walmart and bought two cheap lamps and a blowup bed. I built and replaced from there. The only new things I’ve bought over the years are my tv, computer, phone and a couple lamps. All my furniture is used and I sew all my own clothes.

If this were my apartment I d turn the couch around and make it face the bed, and, if I had guests over for chatting and drinking, would cover the bed with a thick quilt, and put up some thick, rectangular pillows against the wall, to fashion it into a second sofa, when needed.

No carpets in my present home only large washable rugs so don’t use the shoe off rule anymore but we do have disposable shoe covers, but when I move I might go back to it depending on flooring, but definitely a good idea if you have space.

  20. Rand Zopyr on October 14, 2022 at 7:08 am

I’m getting a 90’s vibe with a hint of East Asian – but it doesn’t scream "asian person" so much as someone that maybe took a trip and brought back mementos.

  21. norika0330 on October 14, 2022 at 7:09 am

She and Simu Liu are identical twins 😳

When in my 20’s I had a studio apartment in an old converted house. By far the best apartment I ever had. I hope to find something like that again. Live her peace, very peaceful…and not themed!

  25. Moremi Aj on October 14, 2022 at 7:12 am

I loved the cultural tour through this apartment. I completely agree that it’s the familial and ancestral memories along with a personal touch that makes a home. Thank you for sharing your space with us.

that butterfly table is genius. what a Stunning apartment

  30. Cecilie Noble on October 14, 2022 at 7:18 am

Her space is gorgeous! I was going to suggest a decorative divider behind the sofa, to hide the bed! You really don’t see the bed and the tall ceilings make the room look so spacious! Is there a bathroom in this Studio?

  31. Sharice Breedlove on October 14, 2022 at 7:19 am

  41. colleen royle on October 14, 2022 at 7:32 am

I would have put a sliding shade/curtain between the sofa and bed

  42. Jason Sterling RMC on October 14, 2022 at 7:33 am

This is about as small as apartment living should go. It’s cozy but not unworkable with enough room for proper cooking facilities and proper bathing, along with some storage. The fantastic bright windows also help make it extremely livable.

  43. C D on October 14, 2022 at 7:33 am

I wanted to see the bathroom.. ☹️…it really is lovely though

  44. cathy phegley on October 14, 2022 at 7:35 am

I love this space and this woman. Delightful.💕Cathy

  45. Mike Teo on October 14, 2022 at 7:36 am

I give 5 stars to this tiny but very cosy apartment. 1 star especially to the tray table for its clever idea.

  46. Diann Shoemaker on October 14, 2022 at 7:37 am

Still..what do you do for your clothes??? I mean…this IS New York. Tailored things, for example, MUST BE HUNG.

  47. BumbleBee on October 14, 2022 at 7:40 am

I let someone delivering a piece of furniture for me get in with shoes. I thought they would be sensible enough to avoid the rug, but they weren’t. I still feel stupid for it.

  48. Alecha Blackmon on October 14, 2022 at 7:40 am

    This sparks joy 🥹

  49. wmhfv on October 14, 2022 at 7:42 am

This space is so cute and she seems so fun! Would love to just hang out on that couch and chat with her 🙂 I love how many little pieces of her taiwanese heritage she has all over her home too! Just love so much about this apartment!

  50. Hey Boomer on October 14, 2022 at 7:43 am

This entire apartment is just a few square feet larger than my own bedroom, so I can really appreciate how wonderfully it is laid it out. It appears so livable, so comfortable. And your kitchen is fantastic, given the size constraints. I watched the video several times and picked up more details each time. I’m glad you showed your floor plan – that’s something I wish all home video tours would include.
