Linda, how about one of those TV’s that when they are off it’s a piece of are, it looks just like a piece of artwork, but it’s actually a TV. That way you have the best of two, a TV and artwork over the mantle in your great room.

  2. Lorri Gierman on January 25, 2023 at 5:47 am

Great conversation. I agree with the TV placement on the bookcase wall. You could even separate the bookcases and place the TV between them.

  3. Florence Hayashi on January 25, 2023 at 5:49 am

I agree with John about the tv going on the wall where the bookcases are. No TV on the mantle. And the bookcases should go where the table is. You need the balance across the fireplace wall. Maybe that table would be better in your office? And you could find something else for people to put keys, mail etc. that is not that wide.

As for your oval table in the kitchen, that is great. You always need round and oval furniture pieces to counter rectangular rooms. This adds more interest and texture.

Looking forward to your house progress.

  4. Joyce Browning on January 25, 2023 at 5:51 am

You can repurpose those dark wooden bookcases in bedrooms and get new bookcases for the great room that are the lighter wood like the built-in shelves on either side of fireplace. I think John’s suggestion of TV on the wall where bookcases are makes sense. Great house!

  5. JayCee on January 25, 2023 at 5:52 am

What a fun adventure and new journey. Alot to process, decisions to be made and remade 😀. Great suggestions by talented John and other subscribers. My only addition is at some point in the near future would be to switch out the shinny stainless frig for a custom panel version to match existing cabinetry. It could be just my eye and preference but it’s one of the first thing that draws my eye, not in a good way 🙃. Congratulations on this next phase.

  6. Truthbetold on January 25, 2023 at 5:52 am

Linda, why wouldn’t you consider using that small room behind the kitchen as a drop-off mud room? It does have access to the outdoors. Small gardening tools, jackets and boots can be out of the way and out of sight of you family/TV room.

  7. Tammy Dietschweiler on January 25, 2023 at 5:56 am

Can the bookcases be MODIFIED, to fit the TV inside of it? It is a large bookcase and perhaps this might solve the issue with the table by the door for entertaining!❤

  8. Rose Shellenberg on January 25, 2023 at 5:57 am

Having the bar book table further in the room can also limit congestion at the door way. Having the bookcase on the wall by the existing book table with a smaller landing table helps but minimizes the amount of stuff that land in that area. Just a thought

  9. L. Tiller on January 25, 2023 at 5:57 am

He’s right about the TV placement. The bookshelves will also look better on the other wall. I like his idea about a big round table as an end table and drop off point.

  10. Brian and Tami Olson on January 25, 2023 at 6:00 am

I’m not sure but could you be looking for the word “opaque” can’t see through it❤️

  11. Gibby on January 25, 2023 at 6:00 am

If the shelf doesn’t work in the kitchen, due to being a fire hazard. I would cut the shelf, so it’s not over the stove. Then I would use small tiles to put in the blank space on the wall, and cover the whole shelf/ves with tile too. You wouldn’t lose that long line from far away, still have a shelf, wouldn’t have that underside to clean, and could do any color you want.

  12. Veronica Byrd on January 25, 2023 at 6:01 am

Linda, whey don’t you separated the two book Cases and put the TV between them!! Your new home is lovely.

  13. Jacqueline Keeling on January 25, 2023 at 6:02 am

This was my first time to ever see your “Hubs” on one of your videos. I’ve watched hundreds, LOVE watching. I came to the comments expecting others to be commenting on the fact that he was sighted but didn’t see anyone else excited to have finally met your hubby! Has he actually been on before and I’ve just missed him?

  14. Linda French on January 25, 2023 at 6:04 am

Good ideas, but the talking over and interrupting was annoying.

  15. Linda Springer on January 25, 2023 at 6:05 am

What if you separate the two sections of the bookcase and put the TV between them? It looks like that wall is plenty long to accomadate that. Then, have a shelf made to
go across the top between the two bookcases. A shelf that matches the bookcase.

  16. Carol Summerfield on January 25, 2023 at 6:06 am

Do the bookcases separate looks like the do. Maybe putting a tv between them.

  17. Yvonne Spinella on January 25, 2023 at 6:08 am

    So charming❤

  18. Peggy Schram on January 25, 2023 at 6:08 am

Very interesting!! Can’t wait to follow along.😊

  19. lora millard on January 25, 2023 at 6:09 am

Another idea to solve the tv location. Leave the bookcases on that wall you have it on but separate them to leave space in the middle for the tv to hang in between on the wall and have a console under it with books, plant etc. You also would not see it walking into the room at all until you sat on the couch.

  20. lora millard on January 25, 2023 at 6:10 am

That glass looks like my rain glass in my front door sidelights

  21. lora millard on January 25, 2023 at 6:11 am

Linda, I’ve seen people put their tv over the fireplace and they have a picture covering the tv itself. Not sure how it’s done but that’s always a possibility for you so that the tv is not seen when not in use.

  22. Patricia Panagopoulos on January 25, 2023 at 6:14 am

Hello Linda, I’m so excited about your new new home, I’d love to share a thought. Why don’t you do a Murphy bed in your office, with built in shelves for your books, there are so many amazing styles, that way if both your sons were in town, they would each still have a room. Just a thought!

  23. Kimberlee Cloutier-Blazzard on January 25, 2023 at 6:14 am

A lot of folks buy (small) LED projectors vs. tv’s and just aim them towards a light-colored wall or have a drop-down screen while projecting. All is virtually unseen when not in use. Just a thought.

  24. pattiadams922 on January 25, 2023 at 6:15 am

Would you consider separating the bookcases then use a library table with a tv hanging above it. The tv with frames and you can use the screen to show a piece of art. When not using the tv it will show as a picture above the table

  25. GrannyJan on January 25, 2023 at 6:16 am

I follow a mother & daughter design team in North Texas with a channel called Farmhouse Living. They had a video with some kitchen trends. One showed a shelf exactly like yours except it was maybe a bit narrower and was marble or stone. It was beautiful and apparently a newer trend instead of the usual open shelving. You might be able to find a great deal on a strip of stone to your taste. I actually live the shelf and even if you cut the strip out above the range as Veronica said, would still look great and provide storage for pretty things.

  26. Jade Abernathy on January 25, 2023 at 6:19 am

Re the shelf above stove….if it’s stainless, brass etc would it get hot from the stove? Can’t wait to go on this exciting journey with you. Love your videos!

  27. brenda michalowsky on January 25, 2023 at 6:19 am

What about a Murphy bed. Enjoying this brenda canada

  28. Tammy Dietschweiler on January 25, 2023 at 6:23 am

I wonder if there is room for the treadmill in your office with a bookcase or armoire to block and hide it. So many wonderful plans, I can’t wait to see the final reveal. Love your home.💕💕💕

  29. 01Allure on January 25, 2023 at 6:23 am

I’m happy for your new adventure! I’m happy you are bringing your team with you to reimagine the life you and hubs have curated😊

John really understands design and budgets. He is so kind when giving advice. Linda, your new home is and will be beautiful. Keep us all posted on the progress. I also look forward to seeing how you design your gardens.

  31. pattiadams922 on January 25, 2023 at 6:27 am

Regarding the large doors in the kitchen, is there space on each side to make a space for the doors to slide back into when they are opened?

  32. Yasmin Clarke on January 25, 2023 at 6:28 am

The idea of moving the shelves and adding the tv to the large wall is genius! It would look pretty and be comfortable to watch movies with the fireplace going! 😊

  33. R K R on January 25, 2023 at 6:28 am

LOL!!! Bankette – this SOOoo takes me back! My folks built our home (for 7 kids) in the ’40s & ’50s and they had a triangular table fitted into the benches along the 2 of the walls. We kids found them to be excellent places to shove lima beans and any other detested veg into….

  34. brenda michalowsky on January 25, 2023 at 6:28 am

The bookcase on the wall where the designer says makes sense that will balance the room fireplace on one end bookshelf on other end, brenda

  35. Ann Myers on January 25, 2023 at 6:28 am

I love the idea of the front room being your dining room and having a sitting area in the kitchen. John’s idea for the great room is so much better than having the tv in the corner. The bookcases on the wall opposite the fireplace is best. The table under the tv on the wall where the bookcase is now. The table could still hold your books and bar. A table by the back door for your drop junk. This is so much better than what you were originally thinking. I love your channel!!

  36. garbsproductions on January 25, 2023 at 6:31 am

Would you consider a “frame” tv over the fireplace. 99% of the time looks like beautiful art, 1% TV😊

  37. Pay Petry on January 25, 2023 at 6:31 am

My idea for that shelf is to cut a design out , like carve a curve out a piece, just above the stove. i can’t wait for the yard i know you gonna light Dewey Street up on that corner. I thought you downsized my smaller but this is great size. what a fun house. i will be riding along with ya. Hey Stewart!

  38. Jackie Cook on January 25, 2023 at 6:32 am

You could always separate the book cases and have them plank your TV on each side.

  39. Justice forERICAalonso on January 25, 2023 at 6:33 am

Can’t wait to see your new yard area and your ideas

  40. Mrs. E on January 25, 2023 at 6:33 am

The deciding factor for the TV may be the wall that supplies the stud that the mount can be anchored to. Flat screens are delicate as far as scratching or breaking also and you would not be wanting to lean anything against it.

  41. Connie Pothier on January 25, 2023 at 6:34 am

You are talking about putting shades on the side windows. Is it possible to hang shades that roll from bottom up, so the light can continue to come in through the top part of the window.?

  42. brenda michalowsky on January 25, 2023 at 6:37 am

The table in the kitchen, the one you wanted to use book-bar, wood is so much warmer glass to eat off is noisy. Brenda

  43. Laura Brashear on January 25, 2023 at 6:38 am

Could you separate the bookshelves, place a tv in between and keep your drop off/bar where you have it?

  44. brenda michalowsky on January 25, 2023 at 6:39 am

Slipcovers where are they from thanks

  45. Truthbetold on January 25, 2023 at 6:40 am

I’m with your designer’s idea where to put the TV. Those dark-wood book shelves though beautiful are too strong a focus on the wall you intended for them. Opposite the fireplace would be a much better balance. Thank you Linda we learned a lot from your conversation.

  46. Future Will Pass on January 25, 2023 at 6:41 am

Try placing the television on the wall opposite the wall of the fireplace. Change the layout of the sofa. Have them facing each other. One can look outside and the other at the bookcase. You can recline on the sofas to view the fireplace or the other way to view the television. Possibly a coffee table between the two sofas. Maybe a sofa table behind the sofa that is near the large window. Plants could be placed on it.

  47. Susan Haynes on January 25, 2023 at 6:41 am

He is right about the TV and shelf . I love the round table by the door. Love your new house.

  48. Dorothy Card on January 25, 2023 at 6:41 am

Maybe the treadmill would fit in the bathroom. Quick shower after workout. 😃

  49. Kathi Linton on January 25, 2023 at 6:42 am

Drapes behind the tub would be gorgeous!

  50. Jeanne Brinkman on January 25, 2023 at 6:42 am

Love your new home …and ideas.
Because you love vintage and antiques…. Could you “ house” your TV in some kind of armoire …. and than pull it out on a swivel…. And your armoire would be a focal point and never the Tv. …could even store stereo equipment for music. ❤Glad your feeling better… you look wonderful!!!
