Van Life In A Renovated VW Kombi Westfalia

Taking to the road and living the van life in a beautifully renovated VW Kombi Westfalia, this couple are exploring Australia and working to earn their parking spots as volunteers at sustainable communities and farms all over the continent.

The van has been beautifully renovated using almost entirely recycled and salvaged materials, mostly pallet wood. Kylie and Stu had dreamed of living in a Kombi van and did the entire renovation themselves. In this video, we dive into the build process, as well as learn what it’s like to live full time in a VW Kombi van.

I lived in my 1971 kombi in Wellington for over a year while studying. I basically lived at university and came ‘home’ just to sleep. I had harbour views and my brother lived on the other side of the valley, great for showers and sharing meals. On the weekends i’d go out to one of the bays to study, swim, jog and cook. In winter i’d just light a candle and that was enough to take the chill out of the air. Good times!

    Very WISE CLEVER People.
They Bought the Van & used it as it was,
THEN , :- Decided how to Build it & WHAT THEY ACTUALLY NEEDED !! = Excellent !

Never THINK or IMAGINE What you Need in a Camper Van.

Throw A Mattress on the Floor to Sleep on & a Bucket to Pee in.
Everything else is a Personal Choice / Learning Curve to Suit YOUR PERSONAL USE & Needs.

    For the Early Days, :-
You could use Disposable Cutlery, & plates etc.
& Buy Cold Food & Ready to Eat Food. or Visit a Drive Thru ? or Call a Hot Food Delivery Service ?

You will Need a Small cooking Facility for Hot water for Drinks & warming Simple meals.
A Portable Gas Ring will Do the job for the Short Term.

Night time Warmth = ADD More THERMAL Bedding or Clothes.
The Cheapest Heat overnight is a " HOT WATER BOTTLE " Any water Heated via a Campfire or Gas flame etc. Will Keep your Bed Warm all night. ( Re-Use the same Water each Night, Don’t pour it away. )
& / or Buy an outdoor Sleeping bag for low temperatures ?

    Cost of a Van Plus ? £100.00 / US $130.00 ?
Will Get you Out & about for a few days or a week or two, While you work out what you need, = VERY Little Fitting out of a van.
Until You Figure out EXACTLY what YOU need & how often you need it. & How much Space this method will FREE UP.

The materials may be free/cheap but the extra weight will add to the gas and these vehicles are so underpowered anyway. Looks great tho’,,

I find it funny though how hypocritical people are. Driving an old VW Bus is everything but eco-friendly. Fuel and Oil consumption as well as emissions are not up to ecological standards…

  41. Sandy Hagen on April 24, 2022 at 8:12 pm

The only other thing they need to do to make things really “green” is to convert their V-Dub to EV.

  42. BUXBE on April 24, 2022 at 8:12 pm

Bryce, my tiny home is a tent I take on my motorcycle. My combi is a Crumpler Dry Red 6. But, yes, I am dependent on cafes. And silence. 😉
