โš ๏ธ SAFETY when BOONDOCKING & DISPERSED CAMPING ๐Ÿ•

With campgrounds closed right now, many people are looking into dispersed camping as an alternative. Understandably many people are concerned about the safety aspects of camping remotely on public land. It’s a sad fact that there are criminals who will prey on campers and hikers out in the wilderness by intruding on and raiding campsites, breaking into vehicles or worse. Hopefully some of these camp security tips can help you stay safe and feel secure out in the wilderness whether you are living in an RV full time or out for the weekend tent camping on public lands.

About to go dispersed camping myself up Guadalupe MTs..taking a gun, my dog, bear spray and a varied selection of knives lol.
I don’t think I’ll need them, but you never know. Better safe than sorry in this case.
    Subbed. Blessings.

Probably not a good idea to start anything with an armed camper when you are out in the middle of nowhere without being armed yourself. You don’t have the same rules in the sticks. Nobody would know if you got taken out and rendered into ashes in a campfire. Teeth, bones, clothes, all of it, ash. You can take your chances and assume nobody would do anything, but you only have to be wrong once. I feel like a lot of people don’t think about this.

I’m retired Law Enforcement and been around guns all my life. Backpacking they stay at home the majority of time. I backpack solo and my camp is normally setup 100 feet or more off trail. My two items are a good , solid , wood hiking staff and a large can of Bear Spray. The Bear spray is rated for Grizzly Bears and will go out over 30 feet. The benefit is it’s a non lethal item but you would not think that if you were on the receiving end of it. It’s good for any warmblooded critter , 4 legs or 2. Plus I hike the Florida trail and as a member I can not carry a firearm on it even with my Concealed Weapon Permit. The weapons for that permit are carried when I’m the so called civilized areas.

Not to do "stolen valour" .. but what about hanging up a "United States Marine Corps" flag as soon as you get to camp? Who the hell wants to F with a Marine?
I liked the idea below (Hoo eKoo posted it) that says to "bring multiple camp chairs".. that’s REALLY smart, give that person a "like" for it. .we will possibly start doing this one..

Lol i have been camping in the cascade mountain range of the pacific northwest my whole life!!! Only thing that’s scarry in the woods alone is your thoughts!! Cougars and bigfoot the rest are all scarred of you and won’t bother you as far as other people out in the woods if you see another person your not far enough away!

I would never recommend ot anyone to go into the wilderness without firearms, rifle and pistol. Case in point, my friend was out overlanding solo in eastern Oregon. He was setting up camp for the evening when a car with four methheads drove up and exited their vehicle. My friend picked up his rifle, the methheads got back into their vecicle and left. My friend packed up his kit and left to find a different place to camp that night.

Get a speaker with a soundboard of different gunshots and animal noises.

A good axe/hatchet/tomahawk goes a long way, as well as a walking stick!

Just like a condom! Would rather have one and not need it, then too need one and not have it.. The hole family might get screwed. The dog too! Lol. Sty safe!

Are you around the Pacific Northwest?

  18. Copper City Traveler on January 1, 2022 at 2:56 pm

When we take our Cleveland horses on a weekend excursion(even in Winter), we always pack the Henry .45/70 rifles. Always. We don’t take kindly to trespassers on our vast property.

Firearms are needed to protect a society from their corrupt governments more than from camping dangers

  21. BILL WILLIAMSON on January 1, 2022 at 3:00 pm

My only security concern is when I live my short bus on my small motorcycle to go trail ridin or head into a town for stuff. How safe is stuff left unattended? Other then that, mr .45 colt is my emergency life saver.

  22. Steve Smith on January 1, 2022 at 3:03 pm

Not a necessity, but I bring a pistol to scare away animals if nothing else. I’ve only been threatened by people once in 50 years of camping. Definitely bring a dog๐Ÿ˜

  23. Amanda Sims on January 1, 2022 at 3:04 pm

Thankyou so much Donny Great advice! I sure hope I never Have to defend myself against anything out theret threatening, That could ruin an awesome camping trip! And my self defense weapon of choice is an extremely loud Blast of a Horn enough to nearly rupture eardrums and Bear spray! I also carry road flare’s you would be surprised at How many people don’t think of Road flare’s as a weapon and just be careful not to set the whole forest on fire unless Your life is literally on the line, I would.

  24. Bob Thompson on January 1, 2022 at 3:05 pm

found myself face to face with a huge buck. Made noise coming out of the woods, not a sound going in. Could have been bad but wasn’t

Hi Donovan, new sub here. I’ve been hiking, camping, backpacking, now van living since age 10…now 74. Only once did I feel threatened and it was an encounter with a mountain lion in Arizona. All I did was raise my hiking poles and shouted. It turned and left me alone. However, it’s the two legged animals I’m more wary of and using common sense and gut feeling helps me to avoid trouble. I now live in a van to travel wherever the compass points. I do carry a firearm safely secured just in case. I’ve traveled almost 4000 miles in the last two months and have yet to feel like I needed to use any kind of tool for protection, even when boondocking.

I like how you see both sides of the gun issue.

  28. Cottage Country Bruce. on January 1, 2022 at 3:09 pm

one more tip, keep your keys handy, to set off your car alarm.

  29. Tremjar on January 1, 2022 at 3:10 pm

i generally always bring at least one side arm, and sometimes a shotgun depending on where and how long out, i have had to shoot a cyote before to disperse the pack that was surrounding my campsite, only had to take out one, the rest got the message and left, just used a 9mm handgun for that. only time in all my years of camping and being outside on day trips did i ever have to even think about actually using it… often years ago we tried to go camping in the same spot we could shoot at…take everything, and make a trip for everything in one place, 4wheeler over that way, shoot over that way, camp in the middle places like that… but those do not really exist anymore.

  30. Knowhereman on January 1, 2022 at 3:10 pm

The fact that people are worried about offending someone if they mention carrying a gun for self defense shows the erosion of the first and second amendments.

  31. Kenton Hammond on January 1, 2022 at 3:11 pm

Either my .357 magnum or my
.44 magnum is always with me in the boonies. I’m in the,.. your stupid if you don’t camp. If you’re not competent or comfortable with a firearm, train & learn how to use it & put it in your tool box. Every skill you learn will help you sometime in life. Nothing is better in the backcountry for protection than a high powered revolver,… period.

Large dog bowl and 2 pair of dirty work boots at the steps. Never take anything for granted. Never

You made a cool video I also have you ever camp in Georgia ?

  34. Lee Cox on January 1, 2022 at 3:16 pm

Regarding having a gun or guns: It’s better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it. I keep a tactical shotgun in the rig, and a carry-firearm outside if I feel the need to. I don’t ever want to have to use a firearm, but when I know I am able to effectively defend myself in any situation, it provides peace of mind. I grew up with firearms and have had training in their use. Some folks are not comfortable around firearms, and that’s okay, but I go by the advice in the first sentence.

  35. Lee Row on January 1, 2022 at 3:17 pm

Life is crazy these days be safe son.

  36. Lost13 on January 1, 2022 at 3:21 pm

Great video. For me it depends on where I’m camping. Sometimes I carry a revolver and sometimes I only pack pepper spray.

  39. Cupcake Mcgee on January 1, 2022 at 3:22 pm

Always carry something, never know who you run into.

  40. photorooster on January 1, 2022 at 3:22 pm

Funny story about carrying a firearm. We had a pop-up camper for awhile and over 3 months traveled from FL to CA and back again seeing everything you can see along that route. We passed near the Mexican border and thought it would be fun to cross over and look around. We did and right at the very moment we crossed the border I remembered the handgun. DAMN! We did a U-Turn and left right-away and I was sweating bullets that they might search our vehicle. They didn’t but WHEW that made me think about the wisdom of carrying a firearm.

  41. Lazvt84 on January 1, 2022 at 3:25 pm

GET COMFORTABLE with a firearm for a whole host of obvious reasons….besides, they’re fun and your birthright!! Great vid!

  42. KANDACE PATTERSON on January 1, 2022 at 3:26 pm

Of you over 65 and cant run..carry a gun…and do go deep..ambulance cant get there.

  43. Sky King on January 1, 2022 at 3:26 pm

Good video!! I have been a firearm carrier and user since i was 16. I travel the U.S. now in a motorhome but i am always loaded to the hilt. Several hand guns and a 45/70 rifle. Just my choices, but i will say to anyone who carries, if you are not prepared, in your mind and intent, to defend yourself to the maximum and the knowledge of when it is that situation, donโ€™t carry. And by the way, those 30โ€™ wasp/hornet sprays are very effective to an intruder. Whether it is animal or human. and not lethal.

  44. Lore Noah on January 1, 2022 at 3:26 pm

The advice on the gun is absolutely true! It’s a personal choice!!

  45. Robert Cochran on January 1, 2022 at 3:29 pm

Having a firearm in the wilderness is sort of like carrying a condom. I’d rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

  46. Brad Irvin on January 1, 2022 at 3:29 pm

If I’m able to have my car right by camp (as opposed to hiking in), I’ll park my car with the headlights pointing toward my tent. That way, if I hear something in the middle of the night, I can hit the unlock button on my key fob and my headlights will turn on and illuminate the entire area around my tent.

  47. Seth's New England Trails on January 1, 2022 at 3:30 pm

You laid out your thoughts well. No gun here. I backpack in New England and we don’t have large predators like grizzlies to worry about. I’ve never felt particularly unsafe while hiking/sleeping in my car and I am not interested in the responsibility nor weight of carrying a gun. Frankly the big danger is just driving to get to these wonderful places. Nice channel!

  48. bikingal on January 1, 2022 at 3:30 pm

this single 68 years old female, wasp spray with 20ft reach, mace, knife, air horn, very serious night stick, remote for car with panic alarm ready, know every part of the body that will most hurt and incapacitate anyone with ill intent, especially the 2 legged male types… sorry guys, but I know I can’t match strength so maybe brains over brawn in my case… and of course use my instincts and don’t get into any situation that doesn’t seem right….

  49. 123limelight on January 1, 2022 at 3:30 pm

    definitely carry never know

  50. California199_? on January 1, 2022 at 3:32 pm

I bring my firearm for protection because I sleep in a tent not in my car. I have seen mountains lion and bears also near the creek I was camping with my single family. Camp fire is illegal now in California so no smoke is keeping the animals away.
