Searching for the best free camping in Texas? You’ve come to the right place.

Despite the size of the state, Texas doesn’t have many free campsites. We’re not talking Walmarts or interstate rest stops – we’re talking about great campgrounds meant for recreation.

We have 7 free sites to share with you today. In addition to location and amenity info, each site will have a unique “Camping in Texas Vibes” score to give you an overall rating.

Hi, we’re the Bradys! We travel the country in our self-renovated 1979 Airstream Argosy. We hit the road in September of 2015 with the goal to live minimally, seek adventure and enjoy the freedom of RV life. We’ve learned a lot in those years and have used that experience to create informative content about the RV lifestyle. We strive to answer any and all questions you may have that will help you on your journey to RVing!

Traveling costs money. Maybe even more than a permanent residence.

Nice job on free places in Texas! RV Texas, Y’All has extensive lists of TX RV sites and information. They have seen 60 some of the 88 TX State Parks, and hope to finish the list soon. We met Tom and Stacey last weekend where they spoke at the Austin RV Show. I enjoy your fine channel and have followed you for a few years. Best wishes for safe travels, and especially good health and happiness. Texas Jack, Austin TX

Brownfield, Texas, up near the panhandle, 40 miles from Lubbock, has a free campground with free water and electricity and a dump station. It is not on a waterfront, but is on the edge of a large park. They have a frisbee golf course, beautiful pecan trees, a pool and a skate board park.

Just wondering if y’all are from Texas. South Texan here from the San Antonio region and can’t afford to travel with a trailer but would love to camp with tents and always wanted to camp on the beach. Been to north padre island in a condo for a couple nights but what camp site would y’all prefer for a camping in a tent.

  17. Kathy Brokos on July 7, 2021 at 3:01 am

Thanks so much for sharing. I’m going to be traveling in my Ford Escape with a roof top tent. Do you see many of them in your travels?

  20. Chelsea C on July 7, 2021 at 3:04 am

My house used to be on north jetty bolivar beach. And let me say this. No one goes there. You could live there for 25 years and no one comes around. Lol.

  21. tomnorman457 on July 7, 2021 at 3:07 am

It’s been years since we stayed there, but Dumas Texas has a free city campground. It’s not on a beach, but it’s right in the city itself. Basically a large parking lot with electric connections. Water fill and dump station on site. There is a donation box on site. Dumas is in the far northern tip of Texas.

Is there any free campsites near Fredericksburg? It is one of our favorite vacation getaways in Texas with the beautiful Enchanted Rock Park. The downtown area is full of gift shops, beer venues and restaurants. Festivals are there all the time. I know there are a couple of harvest host places there, but just learning about rving and wondering if ya’ll had ever been there or not.

I was at Magnolia Beach Feb 29, 2020. I thought it was nice as well. Several RVs but still didn’t seem crowded. You can park literally right on the water and not have to worry about the tide. It’s called Matagorda Bay which is referenced in several Texas country songs Ha. There are also a few spots that are privately owned on the beach that have electric & water if you wanted to do that option but fill up fast. And yes they have updated their camping rules as far as length of stay and Yes, local police do drive by often as well as State Police(one whom is a friend of mind) Ha. So I’d say it’s pretty safe.

There’s a few campgrounds in TX that has free camping with hook-ups. The first one is Brownfield RV Park but people call it Coleman Park in Brownville, TX Free site, 12 RV spots 13amp-30 amp hook-u[s, no 50 amp. The next one is in Mule Shoe, TX its just a dirt lot but its level with about 8 spots. Just for passing through. Its not a great spot but free hook ups right in town. The next one is City Park in Loveland, TX I don’t know if i saw you guys do that one or not,

  25. Thomas Woodard on July 7, 2021 at 3:09 am

We have always liked the free camping at Brazoria County beach.

  26. Teresa Watson on July 7, 2021 at 3:10 am

Free camping sites, some with RV electric, fishing, hiking, no powered boats. Below Tucker Lake dam, no check-in req, no frills. New park under development. Palo Pinto Mountains State Park,. I-20 Strawn Exit, north to Strawn,, FM2372 west 2 miles

  27. Chip Sushidog on July 7, 2021 at 3:12 am

Don’t forget Falcon County park (not to be confused with nearby Falcon State park which is right on Falcon Lake, but which charges a camping fee). We’ll be heading there in a couple days ourselves. Falcon County Park has no stay limit, free water, dump, trash dumpster and free hot showers. There is also limited electrical power available for recharging devices and such at a pavilion and great cell service. https://www.campendium.com/falcon-county-park

  28. Escaping The Rat Race on July 7, 2021 at 3:12 am

Brazoria Beach TX also has free camping for up to 14 days

  29. D Glen on July 7, 2021 at 3:14 am

Just want to mention one the reason there are less sites in Texas is because the government owns less of this state. Most of it is privately owned.

  30. Amanda Dement on July 7, 2021 at 3:16 am

    lake merededith has some

  31. tom wilson on July 7, 2021 at 3:16 am

  32. Chelsea C on July 7, 2021 at 3:17 am

And we don’t have cops so have fun and build a fire. No one cares. Stay for weeks

  33. Magali Ortega on July 7, 2021 at 3:17 am

You mentioned North Padre Island, but South Padre Island has some awesome spots to park your RV for free. There’s so many neat places to visit especially, restaurants. We are super close to the Mexican border, so you can expect great Mexican food.

Edit: Brownsville, TX (also in South Texas) has a park that offers RV parking and they go by donations. The Rio Grande River runs through this park and there’s so many great trails along w/ bird watching. I can’t think of the name right now, but I believe it’s a state park popular for bird watching.

  34. Sheila Ayala on July 7, 2021 at 3:17 am

I grew up in Galveston. My family had a beach house in Bolivar (long long time ago). Haven’t been there in many years. According to my sister, there are a lot of criminals around Bolivar beach at night now. But if you camp there, you can do whatever you want. Camp fire, bonfires, glass bottles.

  38. Joshua Clark on July 7, 2021 at 3:22 am

Dang, what a bummer… how about lbj and caddo grasslands or Sam Houston national forest? You just made Texas look super weak.

  39. Richard Gaston on July 7, 2021 at 3:24 am

Padre Island is a great place to camp, BUT not for a rig. Tent, better by Little Shell. Warning though, if you continue further down Little Shell it would be best if you have a 4×4. And when you pack up make sure you clean up after yourself, my father found out the hard way, he got a ticket for littering

  40. Lawana Folmar on July 7, 2021 at 3:24 am

Having stayed at Magnolia Beach and while it love it the showers have not hot water. Earlier in January 2021 I got the wonderful brain freeze headache while washing my hair. I will be returning there in February.

  41. Melissa Muse on July 7, 2021 at 3:26 am

Can you tent camp at all these places or only vehicle camp?

  42. woody teller on July 7, 2021 at 3:28 am
