Julie, I love your design ideas and your channel. I have a brown golden chrystal granite counters with cherry cabinets and a cream colored island. I’d appreciate your help with backsplash ideas. I don’t want to look outdated Tuscan style, but need good suggestions for a backsplash.

Hi Julie, can you please help me design my house. I really like the way you design💕💕

We will be building a house in 2023 and I am getting my ideas together now. Loved this video as you showed us many many choices and different ways to use color and materials. I am thinking I want a Quarts(white with gray veins) island top with sink and behind that a butcher block counter top on each side of my stove with white subway tile back splash. I am also wanting white shaker cabinets. ANY suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

At 3:53 I LOVE the combination of the open shelf just below the upper cabinets and the way those cabinets have some open, some closed spaces. Are those upper "cabinets" actually all open shelves with a barn-door sliding arrangement in front of them, or are they alternating shelves/cabinetry? If they’re shelves with sliders that feels like potentially a huge cost saving compared with cabinetry.

Julie we are in the process of updating our Formica countertops with granite. We choose White galaxy which has creamy beige colors with small speckles of black, even minute subtle purples (you have to look for them). It has a creamy white background. We are trying to figure out what backsplash materials and colors would look best with the busier pattern of granite.

  8. Sher Bear on February 28, 2022 at 11:05 pm

My home is small cabin type. I love my natural hickory cabinets and want to use black backsplash with black grout. I currently have a brownish muted Formica 🤪…what color countertop? I’m stuck. Please help..I like almost everything you show..

Is Zellige a type of artisan tile, or is it in a category of its own?

  12. Carlos Mangrobang on February 28, 2022 at 11:12 pm

We are doing a kitchen remodel in the spring so now looking for cabinet, countertops, sink, faucet, backsplash and appliances. Kitchen is a small U shape space that two people can barely cook in. We have a lightbox in the ceiling that makes the space even smaller. Needless to say, we will demo that lightbox and install a few canned LED lights. We’ve asked our contractor to provide under the cabinet lighting to brighten up the space. There is a garden window that provides natural light during the day. We love to cook so looking to invest on quartz counter. Wifey loves the feeling of wood. I love the idea of stainless steel for prep area but honestly, if I can surround the 30" induction cooktop, I would. What color do you recommend to make this small space bigger? How about frosted glass upper cabinet doors instead of solid wood? Backsplash or paint?

We did a 40s retro inspired kitchen and did light quartz counters with light grey veining paired with a rectangular zellige tile backsplash with a penny round accent line in white and black that accents our pot filler. While the backsplash does mean a little more maintenance since the grout, I wouldn’t change a thing since I love the look!

  16. AR H on February 28, 2022 at 11:14 pm

I have a really beautiful and bold black granite countertop with swirled lines of color. I have had a difficult time deciding on a backsplash. Help!

When using solid slab on the splash, I don’t see any plug outlets. We have code that requires them, where are the putting them?

I have a galley kitchen with the white cabinets. the white is not bright white but a medium white. The appliances, sink and faucets are stainless steel. the floor will be wooden medium brown. i have 9 glass tiles each tile is 6×6". The glass tiles are handmade and are very bright and colorful. I am planning to install them above the cooking range. For rest of the back splash -Would linen white 6×9" subway tiles stacked horizontally on top of each other look good? For counter top I am thinking of either whitby, wayborne, Smithfield, newport, highgate matt, or swan bridge from cambria quartz. instead of subway tile could I do a quartz back splash. in that case the back splash and counter top should be either newport or Smithfield. what do you suggest?

Hi Julie, really enjoy and appreciate your channel and your ideas and the color that you infuse . I have a dilemma I love my backsplash which is talavera tile unfortunately it’s also on the countertops and I use my kitchen a lot so that has worn down and I would love to keep my talavera backsplash and change out the countertop with something I haven’t decided on yet but wondering if it is even possible to salvage the backsplash when taking out the talavera tile on the countertop what kind of countertop would go well with the talavera tile backsplash? If the backsplash can be salvaged when they demo the telephone countertop

  28. Tanya Muir on February 28, 2022 at 11:26 pm

I have granite and always loved it.. had it in 2 houses. This house i did a different backsplash and did glass with a design over the stove.

  29. Laura Some Number on February 28, 2022 at 11:29 pm

I knew I didn’t like the stacked subway tile look and with the second picture it clicked and I realized it’s because it looks like an Excel spreadsheet.

Thank you for the great info on countertops and backsplashes. We are doing our kitchen in the next few weeks. I have decided on quartz. My question is would you mix colors? I found a beautiful piece of quartz (white with black veining), I want to use it on my island and then use a softer black quartz with subtle white veining on the actual countertop. What are your thoughts? The island would be a very bold piece, just because of its size 52×93. Love your videos. Appreciate your input.
Also congratulations on the new baby! Hope you are doing well!

Thankyou for your informative videos. We are working on choices for updating our kitchen. We have recently tiled the floor with rectified porcelain in a light beige lappato finish. We have warm toned handmade brickwork on the back of the peninsula we wish to keep along with natural pine arcitraves and skirting boards in the adjoining living room. For simplicity and budget we will go with white gloss flat doors, probably with black hardware to match curtain rods and lights in the living room. Love all these things together but struggling to choose counter (ceasarstone type) and backsplash. Any suggestions please?

Hi Julie! Great video! I would appreciate any input. Is it ok to have this on our kitchen with white cabinets/champagne bronze hardware & Calacatta classique quartz counters : beveled white subway tile in a traditional herringbone pattern with bright white grout? Do the bevels and herringbone pattern give it enough texture or should I dial up the grout color a bit? Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

How do you feel about a Watefall island. Are there and cons to doing a waterfall island?

  43. Gentoo Ryan on February 28, 2022 at 11:49 pm

I’m building my first home and the original backsplash is too delayed so I need to pick a new one. Thinking darker gray / black linear stacks with white cabinets/black fixtures, grey w/ white vein countertop… Thoughts on dark backsplash to contrast the white? It would run the whole kitchen and behind the hood. Your videos have been a life saver during my design planning!

  44. Alina Miller on February 28, 2022 at 11:50 pm

You lost me at "laminate is outdated" 🤣🤦‍♀️ come on have you seen the laminate options out there? So many possibilities right now, and so much cheaper!! Plus it can be changed sooo easy if you want a completely different look years from now.

  45. janesaun on February 28, 2022 at 11:53 pm

Yes, I would like a countertop and backsplash video for the bathroom—along w the other parts of the bathroom, like floor and shower.

  46. Frances Rice on February 28, 2022 at 11:55 pm

I especially liked the kitchen with sage green cupboards, white tile backsplash and minimal wood shelves. I also love the patterned tile! I like the Zhelige tiles a lot too! I am going to redo my kitchen, so this video is very helpful!

  47. Chantal Chalhoub on February 28, 2022 at 11:55 pm

Hello this is an amazing video. I am building a new kitchen with natural oak cabinets and would like to use dark granite as a countertop since granite is easy to maintain. Which granite should I choose Angola or Zimbabwe? Which materials should I use for my backsplash and island ? Which color ? I like to have natural materials in my house 😊
    Thanks a lot 🥰

  48. S. Wilson on February 28, 2022 at 11:56 pm

This is by far the most comprehensive, all encompassing coverage on the subject of kitchen countertops and backsplashes. We are all different and not everyone wants a "luxe elegant look". You brought in the artisan options and made room for all the possibilities! Plus giving room for variations on the ever popular subway tiles. I’m a designer myself and have only used typical uniform subway tile on one project, an oyster color artisan style with medium gray grout. I love the more artisan subway tiles and plan on using again, along with a more decorative tile over the sink and stove as an insert for some wow factor! I also love that you dont try to be too cutesy in your presentation, inserting alot of "omg’s" or "That’s just got to go!" Theres a place for "personality" but it can be too much, imo, and you hit just the right note and balance! I like that you tone down the overly enthusiastic hyped up rhetoric and that’s coming from someone who is and can be super enthusiastic when it comes to design! And YES, please do one on bathrooms!! If you haven’t already! Thanks for great content!
