Designer Dan Marentic shares a look inside his minimalist 685-square-foot condo that’s filled with smart storage ideas and space-saving solutions. See how he maximizes every square foot.
“Though still very small, my new condo has considerably more head room than my sister’s garage (and it’s warmer!). Many of the same storage challenges existed here, but I’ve tried to take advantage of every nook and cranny and add a few unique details as well,” says Dan. In the kitchen, additional storage hides bulky appliances, while a natural stone quartz island provides extra prep space. Multifunctional furniture increases seating in the small living room, where a mod fireplace and quirky artwork inject personality. Storage is maximized in the bedroom with custom built-ins, and the den doubles as as a second bedroom and home office thanks to a Murphy bed.

The fireplace looks like a giant CCTV
It is me, but whenever I see the cement floors/walls, to me this is not much different than a hat with no water or electricity. Looks cold and unfinished and not much can be done with it.

I LOVE MODERN, BUT FOR SOME REASON, THIS SPACE DOESN’T FEEL COMFY OR COZY TO ME. IT FEELS LIKE A MUSEUM.
"Every good livingroom should have a fireplace"…NO. I never understood what a fireplace have to do in a (small) city condo ? Firstly …took too much space, secondly has fake flames, no really wood smell… definitely I see no reason to have one. When I go skiing I rent a place with real fireplace. My pleasure to stay around a good fireplace remains intact. But a surrogate one…no thanks. At least for me.

The moment I saw the Eames Sofa Compact, I was riveted looking at his other choices. Anyone who has owned one will probably always own one or two. The size of an average loveseat, but room for 3-4, super sturdy, suitable for sleeping, easily recovered — as a hint: buy one that needs to be redone and purchase LATEX foam rubber. It makes all the difference in the world and will not flatten.
Love the kitchen. The light fixture above the island reminds me of a Newton’s Cradle (clacker balls).
Really like the two vintage "sofa art" pieces that are voided. Awesome! I’m mixed on the "Ashtray Fireplace," but love the wall and concealed door behind it.
I was very curious when he mentioned his fiancé is "she." Doesn’t look like much of a woman’s touch in that space.
