  6. amtakach on June 7, 2021 at 4:44 am

Jeff, thank you for all of your videos, they are awesome. Wondering if you have an opinion on waterproof laminate vs. LVP. I installed LVP in our last home a few years ago, and the look was OK, but it seemed to scratch easily. We are buying a new home and I’m wondering if the waterproof laminate would be more scratch resistant and still be waterproof enough for bathrooms and kitchens.

Im putting laminate on concrete slab. Floor has some minor dips. Will my underlayment help level that out or should i use a concrete leveling compound

Did you do the engineered hardwood flooring video? I cannot find it. Is there an index/search feature to see every video you have made? I do not see one on removing tile from concrete and then prepping the concrete for new floor (whatever type).

Hi Jeff, I just recently moved into an older house that we are working on fixing up. The bathroom is in rough shape and needs to be redone all the way down to replacing subfloor that has rotted in the corner. We do not have the budget to redo the entire bathroom at the moment. I was thinking about putting sheet vinyl over the ugly tile to dress up the bathroom a little bit. I know it’s not a permanent fix and would hopefully only be a year or so to redo the bathroom entirely. Do you see any issues in putting sheet vinyl over the tile?

Jeff! Thanks so much for your reno videos. They are so cool. I hope you get more subs. I have a question, we are planning to reno our ensuite bath and we would like to a soaker tub. We are planning to put the tub on where the toilet and move the toilet to another location adjacent to the tub. Can we convert the toillet drain for the tub to use; and create a new drain for the toilet drain? Then tie it up to the drain line together? Would this work? Thanks a lot for your help!

Hi Jeff. I have learned so much and accomplished many things with your videos. I’m doing kitchen and will be installing LVP. My house is 1975. Sub Floor is 5/8 Plywood I’m removing old flooring back to subfloor. Should I add 1/2 or 1/ 4 substrate for laying the vynl on top. Thank you so much

  21. Jason Robertson on June 7, 2021 at 5:02 am

Curious I don’t see any membranes like ditra mentioned for the subflooring. Are they just not good or over rated as far as support against movement for tile installs.

Can vinyl plank install over tile that isn’t flat? I have 12×12 tiles with wide joints that are randomly designed with uneven surfaces.

  24. Billy Buck on June 7, 2021 at 5:05 am

I have an older house full of rough cut pine flooring. It’s awesome. It’s not tongue and groove. I guess it was done the old school way because the spacing between planks was created manually or with shims, and they were all nailed down by hand, not tacks or with a nail gun. One room, added later, is carpeted. I want to rip out the carpet and replace it with the same style of rough cut pine, and I want to use square nails. I keep reading about how "super easy" this is but I also keep coming across contradictory how-to advice. You have lots of great flooring videos, but none cover this simple old school technique. I’d love to see you cover this.

Why have Laminate if Vinyl is superior? In other words, other than a very slight price difference, why would someone choose Laminate over Vinyl?

  33. Jim McDonnell on June 7, 2021 at 5:17 am

Love info. Just found it and watched a bunch as so unbiased and info. Per this one did have to watch multiple times. My question. Price not prime factor but rather value add. Plan on selling home In 1-4 yrs. Live in Houston and damage to laminate ( worst decision in house was replacing carpet with laminate looks so cheap) so replacing upstairs floor ( not bathrooms as tile and like look etc. Includes bedrooms, media room, game room, closets. First floor is tile with hardwood in dining, sitting, stone ( forget name ) in office. Sounds goofy but separation in rooms and very few places actuall see flooring differences and wasn’t issue when looked at literally 50 homes moving back.
Options considering hardwood, engineered hardwood, vinyl plank. Designer and all read says hardwood not good in hot humid weather which defines Houston. Have hardwood downstairs and see some cupping, discoloration water but not bad unless look hard.

Designer recommending vinyl plank and selected one like… thickness, texture, look, width ( 7”). Can’t seem any hardwoods from upstairs even from walkway open to downstairs ( 40 ft ceiling/ bay windows).

Priorities are basically resale in the 1-4 yrs and something I really can enjoy in interim. Initial cost is not issue if capture large portion and increase sale ability. I am not looking at detailed comparison ( made up numbers well below actual but if costs 1000 units and makes it attractive and easy sell and get 600-700 the cost to me is 300-400. The neighborhood typically attracts executives with family or retirees with children/ grand children visit often ( just included for wear and tear requirements ).

I am willing to have cost recapture within band and just qualitative. Absent everything I would prefer hardwood but unclear if that is pro or con to typical buyer mentioned ( have old dog and friends may spill a beer watching sports so May have minor issues….if that or humidity, etc require sanding/refinishing to sell easily that needs to be included).
Designer says vinyl plank best because look is so close most won’t notice ( obviously would say actual material on sale material), people with kids/pets want durability, etc.

Sorry long and confusing. Your videos have been great and helped me in things didn’t realize. Very hard twist is willing to incur cost ( initial cost minus recapture cost at sale) impossible to measure I know but you come across as person that can give advice.

Thx, sorry so long, liked / subscribed sharing with friend

    Jim McDonnell

Thank you so much for this video. You answered questions I had for quite some time. I’ve been trying to find well detailed or well explained videos online for quite some time on subflooring, but nothing has come close to the detail and explanation you have put into the subject. Recently, without really wanting too, I found myself in a project having to install subflooring in the bathroom, and I was really concerned about the OSB and the thickness required to handle tile. Today, this video has helped me out tremendously. Really appreciate your content. Thanks again.

My house was built in 1930. I took the carpet out and there is an actual wood floor (with a design) under it. Should I take it out? Or should I just put vinyl on top?

  39. Jon D on June 7, 2021 at 5:26 am

Hi Jeff, currently in the middle of building a second suite in my previously finished walkout basement. The house was built in 1986. We want to put vinyl plank flooring down. The sales people tell me I can install the floor on the concrete but our contractor wants to put plastic and plywood down first. If not plywood he recommends at least the plastic vapor barrier. What do you recommend? Love your videos!!

Tiles work best on reinforced concrete floor. Wood requires a lot more work to get tiles right. I would avoid tiles on wooden subfloors when reasonable.

  44. TimDiana Hird on June 7, 2021 at 5:31 am

Where do you get that underlay?

  45. krissy5721 on June 7, 2021 at 5:32 am

You mentioned a new type of floating engineered hardwood you would be doing a video on. I couldn’t find any videos about it posted after this one? What was that product?

  46. : : Joanna : : on June 7, 2021 at 5:33 am

Do you have a link to the high density flooring underlay you talk about at 37 minutes? I know to get from flooring supplies store for about 20 cents sq ft, but is there a brand name?

  47. Dapper Dame on June 7, 2021 at 5:36 am

So when installing tile on osb the thickness needs to be 1.25 inch even with a uncoupling membrane?

  48. Madellyn Pineda on June 7, 2021 at 5:37 am

The vynil on my bathroom floor is ugly and old. From what I heard in this video, I should pull it out and install the new one? Or I can just install it on top of it, since it’s very flat? Well of course I will double check that the door can open and close freely 🙈 by the way, now I understand why the whole apparent makes so much noise when I walk 🙄😣😣 so annoying.

  50. A Cooper on June 7, 2021 at 5:38 am

Don’t get it. You can tile directly on plywood that’s 1.25" think? No cement board needed?
