Ask A Designer: How To Layer A Rug Over Carpet

Layering rugs is on trend, but is it okay to layer a rug over carpet? H&H’s Joel Bray and Jennifer Koper say yes and offer expert advice on how to achieve this cozy and textured look!

Joel and Jennifer’s trick to mastering this style is approaching it with a boho aesthetic. It’s important to consider the thickness of the rug that will be layered over carpet. Joel and Jennifer suggest choosing a lightweight rug to avoid a tripping hazard, like a Berber rug as opposed to sisal or seagrass. Get their tip to prevent the rug from shifting out of place, and find out how to position the rug in relation to the room’s furniture. Watch the video for the full scoop!

I really want to change the look in our living room, but our wall to wall carpet is half inch thick pile. I tried a lightweight area rug which I loved the look of but it did not work out. At all. I had furniture on 3 of the 4 sides to keep it down, but then it sank in funny, but no furniture and it shifts a lot. Thanks for any advice you can give.

I want to add a rug under my king size bed over my ugly brown carpet. the rugs I like are SO expensive, and my room isn’t big enough to  have a separate sitting area with rug to add texture…. what is the smallest I can go with a king bed? Can I do a runner just at the base?

Great video wondering with wall-to-wall white carpeting in the living room and dining room will be OK and look nice to put a oriental area rug or is that a mistake or outdated

ok so my wall to wall carpet is quite thick not shag but not berber. should i skip a rug in that case? i’m afraid a thin rug with furniture on it will melt into the carpet. ???

Just make sure the sofa and chairs can set on the edges of rug, or you will constantly be adjusting the rug. It slides and wrinkles every time it is walked on.

Need an area rug to protect carpet against cigarette burns. Wife has TBI and drops them occasionally. Can you suggest a material? And yes efforts to get her to quit didn’t work, so no sarcasm please.
