I’m currently planning my house: My entryway is the only way into my house, and the only place in the house where I can store my travel/garden/winter/sports gear. So it has to be a super functional mudroom with loads of floor to ceiling storage, a raised dog shower behind the front door (could move that to the bathroom, though I like the idea of getting rid of muddy paws, soggy jackets & dripping umbrellas directly by the door) and a large dog kennel with comfy dog bed, food, water & storage above. Thats the room where I will leave my huge Goldie for an hour or two if I have to, so I only plan for a small bench directly by the door and would hide the rest behind closed doors (including the valet/drop off station). Most mudrooms are planned like a long hallway with storage on both sides, mine would have the kitchen directly around the corner and a long ‘dead end’ with a small window for natural light (approx 150 in long) on the left. Any ideas how I can make it a bit more welcoming & personal? I fear that it looks like a stark white dressing room when opening the door. Only possible areas to put something (if it works with the dog …) is in the window, above the bench & maybe above the dog shower – none of which is visible when entering, so maybe not the best first impression …

I bought my first house out of emotion. for so long I tried to copy the previous owners decor. I had a hard time keeping it up, I finally realized that their style doesn’t fit my life style. I am learning to decor w kids, keeping a classy and elegant style and functional at the same time. Your videos have helped me so much to understand and learn more about myself. I’m so grateful for your channel. Thank you Julie

This was very helpful Julie! In looking at this video, I’m wondering if I could add a small seat of some kind upon first entering my home to sit on to put on/take off my shoes. I have a very small entry way which leads straight into my living room area. It’s a small 3×4 foot space that is not carpeted and then the living room has carpet. The seat would have to sit up against a very small wall and would need to sit on the carpet. What type of seating might you suggest using or would you?

Julie the view from my front door is a stairs on the left that turns to the right. Open under the stairs. With a small open archway to the left. Through the archway is a tiny space that opens to the lest to the office to the right coat hooks then left door to utility room. It’s thw wall beside the arch and through the arch I feel I don’t know what to do with. Love your channel. Lovely work.

I have odd window and door area. Kitchen and family room combine. Window close to sliding door. Should all the curtains be the same? Kitchen window too? Thanks appreciate any help.

This is great. My rooms get stale. I usually rearrange a room with each season to establish new patterns (storage/routines/art). I am addicted to repurposing spaces and learning them again. It’s just like trying new plants in your garden once I better understand a particular space and its potential to be maximized.

love your videos Julie – have a question. If you have an entryway(foyer) that extends to a stairway that is very open. Would I put a single chandelier or would I add a second one as well and how big can they be?

  17. Anya T on March 3, 2021 at 10:54 pm

Oh Julie. This is probably your best video ever. I’m binge watching your videos, while I’m trying to get some housework done. This video is a constant distraction!!! Lol.

Hi Julie, this was so helpful. My entry door directly opens into my living room. I am struggling with the placement of the chandelier as I want to keep ceiling fans as well.

whoa–I am literally in the middle of trying to think of what to do with my entryway–and I see that Julie just dropped a vid on entryways…

  29. colleen theuerkauf on March 3, 2021 at 11:16 pm

Thanks for the video Julie! Perfect timing. I went “shopping” in my house and gathered a narrow 48” table, my grandfathers brass koi fish lamp, and a couple of ceramic pitchers and placed the table perpendicular to my front door. Everything is open concept and this made the perfect landing spot at my front door. I added a woven basket on the lower shelf. Thanks for explaining the concepts to keep it beautiful and simple.

🙋 hiiiii…I absolutely like the videos.. I’m considering a home gym in a upstairs bedroom…. I’m interested in how a professional designer choice of colors, window Treatments, and cooling options to create a space within a space.

Really enjoyed this video as always, Julie! I always struggle with my entryway for creating a space to take shoes off as we don’t wear shoes at home and I want the entryway to "organically" suggest to visitors to remove their shoes. So I learned a lot from this video with all the seating area. I really liked the suggestions for bold entry way. I am assume that the design theme would flow with whatever the rest of the home design, meaning that the furniture or design theme of the Living and dining room would dictate what kind of style the entry way right? The new home that we are planning to buy has a long entry way that opens out to the living room on the right and an open kitchen concept to the right. How do I create a bold entry way especially for the ceiling or wall. How far would it have to extend to delineate the entryway?

Thank you for your content Julie! I was wondering if you could help us know how to style a home with beige tile floors. It is a rental and have to work around it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Love your channel. I have a Backyard that is 30′ x 30′ square. I would like to turn that into a small outdoor bar with over head lighting and seating for about 4-8 people. It’s not big but I would like to see if you have any designs for someone with a small budget.

  40. Bev. Sarkonak on March 3, 2021 at 11:25 pm

Hello Julie! You have taken awkward to spacious areas of entries and made them functional and gorgeous. Thank you for this video, such an inspiration to self decorate my areas – a small bungalow. Thank you once again.

    Hi Julia,
I really like your work. Can you please get in touch with me please.

  42. Jane Reinhardt on March 3, 2021 at 11:29 pm

My new house entryway is very long and only 5′ 1" wide. I also have a fairly long outdoor covered hallway/tunnel leading to my front door. Maybe 8 feet long, which I plan on blocking off with a wrought iron gate to prevent solicitors from reaching my front door. Maybe I can put my entry console table outside in my passageway to my front door in this approx 8 foot long 5 foot wide space.

Need solutions for furniture layout for small media rooms and ways to add stadium seating.

  46. Goofy J on March 3, 2021 at 11:36 pm

I enjoyed this video more than alot of them. My entry way is really small. I was fortunate to find an antique hallway tree that has a drawer and has space for umbrellas. I use it for my extra canes and had a custom key holder made that guests can lay their keys in.

  47. Tee MMM on March 3, 2021 at 11:36 pm

OMG 😲it’s like you read my mind. You open my front door and boom the stairs. This is a great help. Thank you 😊💓☺💗💛💖
