Hi Ms. julie, i have a combined living and dining room with the main door in between the two areas, do i need to create a small foyer or partition wall as a stopper for the door upon entry? thank you very much for sharing great and very relatable ideas.

P.S. I’d LOVE to have your large coffee table book 🤗

Julie, have you ever considered writing a book or a blog with all of these design tips? I found myself constantly taking notes during everyone of your videos. Having you tips in writing would be amazing!

This was so helpful! My space is tiny and was thoughtfully designed architecturally. The video helped me on issues like how much it needed to coordinate to look cohesive and how to differentiate. Thank you!

Got so much inspiration from this video thank you!
I do have one question, I own an apartment that only has an open plan living and dining and only 2 light outlets on the ceiling and I can’t move them…the dining one doesn’t quite sit above the table so should I still use a pendant or more of a semi flush? Would love your help!

Just purchased a home with an open concept living/dining room. Picture a large rectangle. On the south wall in the living area, I have a fireplace and to it’s right is a built in double shelf unit . On the east wall there’s a slider to a deck. The west wall is short because it opens to the entryway, thus a "corridor" is formed from the entry to the primary bedroom area. ( no, you can’t see the bedroom from the entry). The north end of the living room is open to the dining area. The dining area is adjacent to a galley kitchen and has an open stair case to the lower level. This stair case is near the entry. I’ve got it planned for the dining space and I’m pleased with what I have in mind but the living area with the north end open to the dining space has me stuck as to furniture placement. How far out into the "corridor" do I come with furniture. Maintaining the recommended 36" is no problem. I like to have the sofa face the fireplace, armless accent chairs on the east side facing the TV. I’m keeping the area in a mid century vibe. Can you give me suggestions on furniture placement ? Side note: the current owner have a marshmallow leather sofa (92" long facing the fireplace) and a marshmallow love seat,( 80′ long )on the east side facing their TV).

I would love to float my living room furniture, but then I have nowhere to plug in lamps beside the seating because it is way too far away from the outlets on the wall. 🙁

  16. Vicki Gonya on January 21, 2022 at 3:55 pm

I love the cluster of same colored pendants in different shapes. Thinking that I Dea over my dining table on one end. The table is hugh, pottery barn large black that I’m refinishing dining room is 11×11 so very small. Doing setee against the back wall and positioning it close to the windows on one end. Do you like the idea?

Enjoy all the Julie Khuu regardless if they are applicable to me. The cadence of the video from room to room allows me to focus in on objects before you cut to another room. Because you linger longer in the areas you are discussing, i dont have to constantly stop video and go back a few frames to catch that moment again and again. I really appreciate that. I have a very uniquely awkward small open living space that has sat empty for three years because it is that awkward. I am emotionally paralyzed for fear of bringing out the worst in it. I look forward to more problem defying strategies. Thanks a Bunch!

I Love this video. I just purchased a house and it has an apartment layout where kitchen is the first thing you’ll see on the left side upon entry. It has an open floor plan too. Is it Ok to put a divider or a hall tree in the front door so I can have a little entryway space? I just wished I have a traditional kitchen at the back of the house, but it is what is available now and I love the location of the house. I am just not used to this layout where kitchen comes first.

  22. Peachy Cat on January 21, 2022 at 4:04 pm

You need your own TV show!

  23. Blair L. on January 21, 2022 at 4:04 pm

Some people mentioned that the benefits of open floor plan is to observe everything and everyone at the same time, if u have kids or elderly that u want to keep an eye on.

Some other people are used to having rooms with purpose, dining for eating, kitchen for cooking, living for watch tv and gathering, etc.

So it’s back to the living habits of the clients. As a designer, i always ask that before designing layout for the house.
But for limited space, such as apartment, i suggest open floor plan, for a spacious feeling.

Dear Julie 💜💙💚 amaaazing once again… I am finalizing my space right now, I spent hours and days sitting in my headquarters learning about myself through your videos, knowing my space due your wisdom, reconnecting with my 6th sense. Total of 3 years to have a clarity, but sooo worth it. It was like a masterclass I had studied and now I feel at peace with what I know and therefore have created. Thank you, teacher 💜💙💚 love and abundance to you and your family 🌸

Lots of new builds have galley style open space living room kitchen areas with formal dining in a completely different room. Would love this aspect to be addressed, especially with corner fireplaces and the entryways cutting through the space. I’ve never felt so cramped while having so much space. you are stunning and I love your channel. Thank you!!!!

Love your video, Julie. Thanks for sharing your tips. Very helpful.
We just acquired a property so we are starting from bare living spaces. Hope to find the best one from your videos.

What if it goes straight from kitchen to living room? There’s not really a “dining area”. For a townhome

  33. Alexis Childress on January 21, 2022 at 4:20 pm

Can you show how to design a living space with a fireplace by the main entrance?

  34. Lainy on January 21, 2022 at 4:20 pm

Love, love, love your videos! Are you planning on doing an Awkward Space Solutions on rooms in a turret or tower? I love all the windows in those rooms, but find furniture placement difficult whether it’s to be a reading room or a bedroom. No matter how the room is used, I don’t want to turn my back to the windows or the view.

I loved this video Julie. So informative and helpful. Love the case studies as well. Thank you. I would love to see a video that piggybacks on what you described about lighting. I have an open floor plan with high ceilings. Would love to hear or find tips about what types AND where to find lighting for high ceilings over a dining space.
Wishing you a happy and successful 2022!!

Very informative. Thank you for all the examples. My new home is open concept. Would you say a ceiling fan with a light is just as good as a chandelier over the living room space?

  42. Barry Hoven on January 21, 2022 at 4:32 pm

Good Evening Julie. Happy Pre-Thanksgiving. I have an awkward space conundrum for you. We have a three season room that is rectangular. We are using it as our dining room because it sits just beside our garden.. There are two awkward problems. First the light in the middle of the room is a ceiling fan. I call it the “old southern parlor ceiling fan”. It is white and boring with tulips shaped lights. Whats worse it is not centered on the table it’s centered in the middle of the vaulted ceiling. There is a L-Shaped walk space through the room so centering the table in the room is impossible. The second challenge as it is a sunroom there are more windows than walls. It makes hard hanging featured artwork difficult. The easy thing to do would be using the wall above the windows before the vaulted ceiling begins. Unfortunately that would give the room a ski lodge feel or a grandma’s tchotchke’s on a shelf room. Yeck! I have been trying to convince my spouse we should use thin monorail lighting system and point mini spots onto the table and possibly mini pendants over the table but he balks at that idea.

Additionally, our table is rectangular but it can convert into a larger square table to accommodate eight chairs.

How do you suggest designing a small den area as a family room

  44. IveGotThis on January 21, 2022 at 4:32 pm

Hi Julie I’m stumped where to put the tv. My focal point in my open space LR is a fireplace. The tv has to go above the mantel or too the left of the fireplace. There’s no other walls. If it goes above the mantel then what do I do with all the cable wires and box? 🤔

Can you please do a post on dressing rooms? Not a room made into a dressing room. That’s too easy and annoying. but maybe expanding your small closet into a large walkin wardrobe. That’s what i am trying to do now. I will lose a big chunk of the bedroom but it’s a dream of mine. Or behind the bed dressing room which is becoming big.
