Great ideas! Can you do a show just on what you would change about a space? It really helps me understand your thinking when you do that. Thanks.

I am tasked with designing a pre architect floor floor for an architect on a lot 10meters wide by 20meters deep. It has to include parking for a large pickup truck….a challenge for me never having built shotgun or small houses before.

Our living room has 1 long wall with the stairwell across from it with 1/2 wall, 1 wall with window and the dining room across from it. I am so confused on furniture placement. It’s mainly used for watching TV so can’t seem to find the balance.

I wish I could send you a copy of my long but narrow living room/family room. I just don’t know how to separate the two. Is long and narrow but what makes hard is that the entrance is the beginning of then living room 😁

  6. Alex DudeMeister on August 24, 2021 at 9:56 pm

For a ***Fireplace in the Middle*** can you place chairs/sofas perpendicular to the fireplace and then use the wall opposite the fireplace to hang the TV? Viewing the TV when it’s placed above the fireplace forces me to crane my neck for long periods of time… Comments are MUCH appreciated!

I live in an apartment and the main room is dining/ living room very narrow. But the most awkward part is that the walls are not even, so that creates an uneven division through the space. I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to renovate the space and accommodate the furnitures 😭

I love your statement, “Perspective is everything.” Yes, it is. This is an awesome video. I love each of the illustrations and showing how to utilize each space to the fullest. I am trying to purchase a new home and it features such a living room – dimensions 21 x 11. I am actually looking forward to this as one end also acts as a passage way to a dining room. If there is enough space I intend to place a desk on that end. I am so looking forward to that space.

What do I do with a huge, box in my lower level that the previous owner used as a gym. He was a trainer. I want to put a wine cellar, and a sauna here. But that leaves a lot of room unused. Any ideas.

my problem with our long narrow room is that of the the longer sides is slanted so our dining area is bigger and it’s difficult to align furniture. i dont have the measurements but try to draw a trapezoid with 3cm and 6cm on the shorter sides and the longer sides are 10cm and (the slanted one) is almost 11cm

Hi Lovely, how would you decorate a living room and dinning room combined in 11m2? I’m clueless on how to do it properly 😔😔😔

  14. Lois Coburn on August 24, 2021 at 10:08 pm

I’m a pro at finding homes with awkward spaces.
My current delimna is how to decorate a small open concept livingroom. It has one wall large enough for a sofa with tables at each end. The opposite wall is shorter because of a fireplace that is at an angle; cutting off the corner. A wall of windows including an exterior door (this door opens into the livingroom) leading to a deck take up the entire wall adjacent to the sofa wall and fireplace. Due to the open concept layout, there is no 4th wall. The space is fully opened to the dining area.

I’ve put the TV on the wall with a console table underneath and an accent chair floating at an angle facing slightly toward the sofa and the wall of windows. My thoughts on this are that it brings the chair close enough to the sofa for a conversation and allows a view of the deck and lake outside without blocking the passageway. The space is really too small for a 2nd chair.

Suggestions for other possible furniture arrangements or wall decor? The fireplace mantle is too high to put the TV above. I’m considering attempting to create a gallery wall to camouflage the TV and am clueless what to put on the wall behind the sofa.

Hi Julie! An awkward space is: bay windows in living rooms (and other rooms). How do you fit window treatments there? What furniture can you put there? What do you do so it doesn’t look like wasted space? I live in Vancouver BC in Canada and this is a super popular “feature” in many homes. Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Still struggling w/ my space. 20 x 14 w/ a corner fireplace and 3 doorways. Would love any ideas you could provide!

  17. Shabnam Abdullah on August 24, 2021 at 10:10 pm

Hey! So happy to learn about awkward spaces, its been very enlightening. My apartment main door opens into the middle of my living room (which is 16 x 25) on one side of the long wall and a wide opening/ passageway into the dining room area on the opposite wall. On the narrow side there is a full french window looking into a small balcony that further looks into a garden while the opposite wall is blank. I have white marble flooring. The problem is that the door not only divides my room but also enables passersby or visitors to look through and through into my whole apartment if i open it for entrance.

Your tips are very helpful! Can you give any advice on furniture placement in a 1200 sq ft 1960 ranch house ? The layout is so awkward with windows and sliding doors all along the rear to the back yard and only 3 small windows in front. It’s an open living room , dining room and another room ( with doors) from the dining room ?? Ugh!
Living room has wood paneling and either side of a floor to ceiling red brick fireplace with mantle.
I know it is specific but I have no idea where to place what , or what that extra room is even.! Haha
Maybe more people have these older small homes that need advice. You would be my hero ! ❤️ Thanks so much. I love your videos , they are so helpful!

  19. Liz on August 24, 2021 at 10:13 pm

I also would like to see this video with focus on smaller places with wood stove (small fireplace) and television setups, and open concept from kitchen to dining to Livingroom. My long narrow space is 12ft wide. Bedrooms doors are on the left long wall starting 6ft from end wall. and on the right a long wall with windows 4.5 feet of the ground along the wall. I’m thinking of putting what looks like a wood stove at the end of the narrow space either in the centre of the wall, or to the right at the end of the wall (maybe in the corner). The ceiling is sloped with the higher end to the right wall. Not much room to play with here. Love your videos, I’ve learned so much. Thank you.

  20. Susan Song on August 24, 2021 at 10:13 pm

Love this video since I have the long living room. Only thing is I feel like two sitting areas would create more of a coffee shop look. What do you think?

  21. Lisa T. on August 24, 2021 at 10:15 pm

Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge. Your channel is everything. I am still hoping you could provide more insight or assist with furniture placement in a small duplex house where there is an awkwardly small rectangular living and dining room where there is a fireplace in the middle and adjacent to the stairway wall. I am specifically confused about where to place the TV and the sofa. I initially planned on placing the TB above the modern fireplace but considering your design rules against TVs over fireplaces, I am seeking guidance on setting up my space. The living room is 207L x 148W. On entering the house (which lacks entryway) the fireplace os facing the door in the right corner of the room which is attached to the stairway wall further right. I am concerned about where to place the TV and have a walkway at the same time. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Julie, I love your videos thank you for doing them! I have a problem, I have a narrow living room (but not as big as the ones in this video) with a fireplace in the middle and the door on the same side as the fireplace and do not know where to place the tv and sofas, I want to buy new sofas but as I can’t work this out i can’t buy, I want to plan in the best possible way, please help, if you could do a video showing some examples that will be very helpful. Non of these spaces were awkward. How to organize a kitchen, where you don’t even have space to put a full table with chairs around it. That’s the challenge, not these huge houses.

  27. ldsw on August 24, 2021 at 10:25 pm

Great ideas for handling these long and narrow spaces.

I have to deal with two of them in my townhouse. My living room is 9.5’x19′ that faces NE in the back of the house and my primary (master) bedroom is 10.5’x19′ that faces SW in the front of the house. The bigger challenge for me is the living room with seating. I don’t know why the builder (company no longer exists) decided to make the living room is a foot narrower than the master bedroom. I managed to hold on to the promotional floor layout sheet for future reference that I received 20+ years ago (TH was built in 1999 + purchased in 2000). I also compared and confirmed both room sizes from my own measurements.

I’m in the process of refurbishing my living room, but with a slightly different arrangement with a sofa and two chairs instead of a (sleep) sofa and loveseat as before. The longer side is a long pony wall that is angled on one side (dislike this setup since I have to fold under a corner of the area rug on that side in the dining area). This pony wall separates the living room from the dining area, which is 9’x11′. The other side of the room has a 6′ sliding glass door and a 36"x72" window with a 5.5′ wall separating them.

I have to say that it’s not easy floating anything in such a narrow living room (I do float seating in the family room (15’x18′) that is way more spacious than the living room). The only option appears to be floating chairs in the living room on the shorter wall where the loveseat used to be. I will likely have to consider a sleep sofa again in this new arrangement since I have converted the smallest bedroom into a home office that I use regularly.

I would change having the television the focal point of any space. Just my personal opinion.

I love how these tips seem so simple but without the nudge it would not have clicked for me

    Thank you Julie!

I appreciate this video so much! I have an apartment set up exactly like this.. The living room is joined with The dining room. We had just moved in and rushed to buy furniture. However I bought furniture that I envisioned to go together but it definitely does not. The two sofas go well with the table but not the small sectional…and the table is way too big for the space we have, seating 6 people…and to top it off its a rectangle not circle.. so at least I know now that circle will be the way to go! I have a lot of work to do to fix this and from this video at least I know now where to start and feel a little relieved for where to start 😌 One hang up I’m having is that my husband wants his work desk out in the main ideal living room area, in the corner of where the set up would be. Julie, do you know if there’s a way to make a work desk work in this kind of area? If not, I might have to just ask my husband to move it to our bedroom.

  42. Norma Tu on August 24, 2021 at 10:42 pm

wow my awkward long and narrow living room is set up like the space at 6:10! My open dining area faces towards the fireplace, and I’d rather have my TV where the TV is here, instead of above the fireplace because that’d be too high and strain my neck. I was hoping to put a cute peel and stick wallpaper on either the fireplace wall (left and right of the fireplace) or on the TV wall as a Focal (not accent 😉) wall… but now I think I can make both walls be focal walls and put the peel and stick on both walls!

Not sure where to put my IKEA Billy bookshelf in this space though. That’s what I’m still unsure of.

I’ve learnt quite a lot from your series, thank you so much. Talking about long and narrow living rooms, I’m about to move into one and it has a fire place in the middle and two large windows both at the front and back. My dilemma is where to put the television. Please help🙏🏿

  46. J Jpp221 on August 24, 2021 at 10:44 pm

Believe me, people with 1,000-square foot living rooms and grand pianos are not watching YouTube for design hints, they are hiring decorators. Can we focus on some more average, middle-class homes please?

  47. Beth on August 24, 2021 at 10:47 pm

Please do a video for a living room(small) with a door on every wall, a fireplace, and an opening to the stairs. It is a nightmare. I want to move because there is no comfortable way to arrange furniture.

  48. Kae’s Alkaline Kitchen on August 24, 2021 at 10:50 pm

Can you do one for small rectangular bedroom.
My bedroom is roughly 11×20 and I need help expanding space

  49. Rysse Lpz on August 24, 2021 at 10:50 pm

What about awkward open concept homes that open directly into the living room via double doors. Right side are bedrooms and bathrooms. The left side is the living room kitchen. Therefore the area is naturally long and narrow. Bedrooms and bathrooms open directly into the living room or kitchen respectively. No proper flat wall for a TV. My dilemma 😫.
