7 days without shower that’s when I go f*k that. I do enjoy watching van life videos but no way I can live in a place smaller than my bathroom.

Nice video and great scenery. 0:23 As someone who has had a brain injury, I cringed. I suggest that you NEVER hang out the window like that. One slip and you will be in a world of hurt- for life. Not to be dramatic, but if for any reason she swerved, pothole, flat tire, etc., you could die. So not worth it.

7:55 Anna is looking at her with a bit of understandable jealousy. The Ram is definitely the way to go if you can swing it. Longer wheel base will drive smoother too.

    Electrical System concerns- Ram:

In the Ram looks great but make sure those two batteries are getting vented. If they are deep cell, they will usually NEED TO VENT to avoid the build up of dangerous gases- in that enclosed space. With sealed batteries I think it is less important- but definitely verify this by asking a few professionals and doing some searches. I was an Elec. Engineering major- but not a battery expert- it’s common sense though. Also, make sure that the inverter is properly grounded – ideally to earth or an electrical ground point (not just ground on the devices.) This is well known in the electrical trade. Inverters are particularly tricky. Street performers often use deep cell batteries and inverters for their amps. Grounds are connected but they can and do get shocked- sometimes really badly. Think of the scenes in a movie when the singer grabs the hot mic and it shocks him/her…same concept. Whoever installed your gear is probably an expert…but I would certainly have it reviewed by an unbiased electrical expert. Should not take long for that person to have a quick look and give you an opinion. Make sure none of that shower water gets anywhere near any outlets or electrical components.

Heat is the other concern. Your inverter is right there. It too needs air circulation to work efficiently. It’s never a good idea to cram a bunch of electrical components next to each other- then seal them in a small space with no air circulation. If it were me, I would probably cut out 2 5" holes and install two fans. One that blows air IN and the other that draws the hot air UP and OUT the roof or that nearby window (just like a bathroom exhaust fan.) By doing this, not only will it be safer but your electronics will last a whole lot longer w/less fire risk. Put some metal shielding on the lid (bottom of your bench seat.) All that heat will dry up that wood and it can eventually catch fire.

Install a CO2 detector inside the van.

Use re-freezable ICE PACKS instead of ice when possible. Even if you use bagged ice, put some packs in there too. They will stay cold after you remove the ice bags…or just buy a RAM!

When I retire, I think I’m going to get me a Ford Transit Van conversion and eat MREs all day. Then, just go to a nearest 24 Hour Fitness for bathrooms and showers.

This reaffirms that everything is a trade off. If what you do works for you and you’re happy then that’s all that matters. As long as you’re ok with the trade offs you’re making then have at it.

    Hassle type of living

  37. Saundz on November 26, 2021 at 12:30 pm

I have rented out a van for 10 days and I had a little of both world since it was a convertible set up in a small van but storage was the compromise. I believe that if you are fulltime living in a small van storage would be very importante but in a weekender not so much.
I’m working on my transit connect plans and as of now I have fitted in a cassette toilet, a tiny sink, drawer refrigerator, an exterior shower, electrical both solar and campsite. Storage is minimal in my plans but still doable and some extra storage can be managed on the roof. And being a little more of a minimalist can also help.
