Camping on Hunts Mesa Overlooking Monument Valley in Arizona: Fun Foto Tips & Trips Episode #37

Come join us with Toney Begay from Monument Valley Safari as we go on a once-in-a-lifetime camping trip on Hunt’s Mesa that looks down on Monument Valley. Toney is a Navaho guide with over 40 years of experience. This was his playground ground growing up. We traveled on old coal mine roads and roads the Navaho used to bring the animals to pasture. What am I saying? I wouldn’t call most of what we traveled on “roads!” Most of where we went was rough terrain, jagged cliffs, and rock faces. I couldn’t even pick out the road when it was right in front of me. He took us to a stunning overlook and dropped us off to enjoy the sunset while he set up camp and started dinner. He picked us up after dark and took us to our campsite. He gave us a wonderful dinner of steak cooked on the grill and chicken, corn, potatoes, and chilis cooked under the coals of the fire. We went to sleep in the tent he set up. At 4 am, he woke us to the Milky Way spreading its arms across the sky and we took some quick photos, then back to sleep. We got some quick shut eye before Tony woke us again for an incredible sunrise at Tom Tillis’ favorite place for sunrise over Monument Valley…Breakfast, and then a trip down the Mesa. Can’t wait for you to see this video.

Thanks for posting this. I am planning at trip out there in the middle of April this year and looking at an overnight trip up there for 3 adults looking to photograph the Milky Way. I hate to book this far out. How far out did you book this? We have 6 days in the area so hopefully we can work something out when we get there. Great photos thanks again

Wow, just watching your truck do this drive made me nervous. I’ve never been to this area but we love MV. I think I’d hike this instead of drive it though. lol I just about died when you had to drive back in the dark! Wonderful video though, thank you for sharing it.
