CAMPING WORLD & OTHER NATIONAL RV CHAINS ARE SELLING THE DREAM BUT WHY SO FEW RETURN BUYERS?
CAMPING WORLD & OTHER NATIONAL RV CHAINS ARE SELLING THE DREAM BUT WHY SO FEW RETURN BUYERS?
What do you think would happen to the national RV chain stores if the first-time RV buyer market were to dry up and they had to depend only on repeat customers?

I have bought 3 units from Bartow Florida camping world and on A scale of 1-10 they are A20
I remember going to Paris France and the tourist outside coffee shops and restaurants were overpriced and overall rude to the point you ask yourself how do they stay in business. It’s because every day a new tourist stops there and they don’t have to change. I think the same goes for the RV market in general are and think the same way. It’s sad but they don’t care because if that person doesn’t come back another in knowing first time RV buyer will come. They will think that because they are big and a chain everything will be better and that’s the never ending rub. That’s how I see it
As always, Wingman great sage advice for everyone out there. Keep up the wonderful advice and up to date information.👍
What’s your thoughts on Thousand trails?
How are dealers getting away with this you ask? simply no accountability. Until that happens, which I do not see in the foreseeable future this will continue on for years. You can beat your head against the wall for so long before you have no choose but to accept it. The dealers know that.😩 my wife and I have been camping now for 37 years and have bought many campers, including one class A motor home. I honestly think the industry was better then.
Visited Camping World Saturday. No place to park because their inventory overflowed into customer parking area, walked in and a salesman that was acting FORCED to stand at the door accosted us, not a good vibe.
You can get screwed by ANYBODY! You can get treated wonderfully by ANYBODY! It’s up to the buyer to differentiate between the two. If the deal sounds strange at all, run screaming from that dealer!
I love this channel. One of only a few I subscribe to. In some ways the honesty scares the heck out of me, while at the same time it’s encouraging. Interesting what’s been happening to Tiffin lately. Sad actually. Decided against a Tiffin for a Newmar but have to sell a few more aluminum cans! 😂. Living in central Florida there are some big RV dealerships. We have opted to work with Independence RV. Reviews look good, “zero” pressure and many of the employees and mechanics have been there for decades. Not sure you’ve heard of them but maybe someone else on here has. Be well.
Absolute Nitemare – We put a down-payment on a motorhome at camping world and waited 8 weeks for them to fix some items before seeing on the news the location had closed. They cashed our check but never once called us to give any updates. After calling corporate about a dozen times we finally got in touch with the new location. Another 8 weeks later we finally got the motorhome but the items never did get fixed in the 16 weeks. True story.
Somewhere around 5 years of ownership, RV owners that bought brand new, NOW realize it’s a serious money pit. The residual value if they try to sell on their own or worse yet trade it in sucks so bad, the owner wont make that mistake again. From top to bottom, the RV industry knows it’s a one and done business model for the most part. One and done = good sales experience. But parts/service/warranty repair is often polar opposite.
It’s been this way for DECADES. They are selling you a dream and a lifestyle. Dreams and lifestyles tend to be very expensive. Once the dream is over, the one and done business model looks for the next dreamer. Problem is, social media is shining so many truth lights on this industry, the dreamers are closing their checkbooks.
I’m doing all my research on buying a rv and still can’t find a dealer in texas that I can trust. Help it’s not easy to trust anyone !!!
Dealers have to play the hand that the manufacturers deal them. I used to deliver gas to convenient store, when the price went thru the roof, I got blamed by the customers, I was called everything in the book accept an old milk cow. I was the scapegoat for the frustration they were feeling.
Stay away from the big dealers they have so many up charges after msp and try to sock it to the people and if they don’t know they will pay for all these add ons because they think they have to have them
Not to this topic, but for what it’s worth, I wanted to report what I see at my local Camping World in New Hampshire. For the last couple of years, they have had only 5 or 6 RV’s on their mostly empty lot. But over the last couple of months, they’ve had a couple of dozen class C’s and A’s. They even have a couple of conversion vans, something they told me they didn’t sell. (Maybe they are trade-ins?) They are overflowing with RV’s for sale. Just an observation.
Was looking for our first rv @ CW…during the review of a selected unit for is to buy, I noticed they were charging me around $1800 for a "traded-in" extra inspection fee, in addition to the dealer prep fees…later during the dealings, I mentioned the unit was going to be a test drive for us and if we liked RVing, we would trade it back in and get one we really liked, newer and better than that used one. The seller told me, "Oh, we don’t take trade-ins…? Huh? So why are you charging me an extra trade-in prep fee? Crickets…we bought from a private party…then I learn from the Wingman and already know, CW is NOT getting out business!
I bought once from CE back in 2018 B4 everything got crazy got a better price then smaller dealers but never again. I keep getting CW dealers reaching out to me trying to get us to buy something from them but I would never buy from any CW ever again. Would rather give my business to a smaller dealer but would never buy new as you get nothing out of buying new especially that MFG’s and dealers don’t want to work on your warranty issues
Still trying to find y list of dealers that u this posted
I went to a Camping World to get some accessory and walked through the sales showroom. Every office had a customer and the overflow was out on the floor with sales people. I ran through a few units on the floor and was flabergasted to see the poor quality on display. Sagging ceiling material, loose trim everywhere, a closet door laying on a bed with a piano hinge with 1/8 inch screws that were suppose to hold it on but obviously didn’t. Will the chickens ever come home to roost? I doubt it. What’s that old saying? "There is a sucker born every minute". Too Bad
I think you’re doing great.
RV dealers and manufacturers aren’t going to change a single thing until the American consumer pulls their proverbial head out of their backside and stop encouraging their poor quality products and exorbitant profit margins by continuing to purchase their junk. For every person that does their homework and refuses to buy new there are 10 people who walk into a dealership and go gaga over the units and lose all sense of rationality, overpay for terms longer than they will last.
I’m gullible because I drove over 200 miles to buy from a highly reputable small family owned dealership for my first purchase. They were very nice, gave me 10% off on everything other than the rv which was $2,000 less than everybody else out the door. Got a call the day after to ask how it towed with the curt independent suspension(they wanted to know honestly from a buyer perspective) and how the trip went (high wind). Got a card from them hand written by my salesperson. Didn’t push me to buy unneeded bs! The finance guy was surprised I didn’t ask for a bunch of free addons, well you don’t get hassled for bs when you are $2000 below everybody else. Give me a sewer pipe and some wheel covers my man!
09:03 Last fall I received a call from a couple wanting help with initial appraisal of some motorhomes they were looking at. It would be nice if those who are very confident about how well their RV’s are maintained had actually done a stellar job of always maintaining them. The very best unit out of the short list of them that they had settled on looking at, all of which had owners that claimed they were well-maintained, had several maintenance-lacking problems. Most of these were in respect to areas and details that the owners may have had no awareness of at all, and even the new buyers thought were of minimal consequence–until, after buying it, it turned out that it was unable to make it through this first winter without a leak having gotten started into a closet area where it was able to do plenty of damage before being discovered. Most "well-maintained" claims have no particular definition and should be taken with a grain of salt.
Luckily I watched and researched enough over 2 yrs to find the right Rv for us at the best price. Unfortunately a lot of people don’t do independent research. I was actually going to drive to Cheyenne Rv but they sold the one I wanted and actually got lucky and found a little better price and closer at Couch RV nation in Ohio. Thanks for all you info videos
I research everything l do so l didn’t make most of the mistakes these people do plus l have bought tons of automobiles and it’s basically the same thing
Does camping world allow overnight boondocking?
you just posted a video yesterday about an old couple who was taken for a ride by the so called smal lRV dealer like you recommend .your full of crap as of now thanks
We just bought our third Rv ..went to a private party and had to drive from Sacramento ca to Phoenix Az to get it. This is after having our 2021 bought back by the manufacturer, that we purchased from a big Dealer in California who provided abysmal service and after the sale service.
That’s the best opening in the last year,I had to pull over to stop laughing. Thanks you made my day and most likely the whole weekend
Hi Wingman
I just started watching your videos. Very helpful. I got no Rv/camper so far. I’m 60+ single female with 2 adorable puppies. I’v been thinking of getting a camper van with bath and lithium battery, no propane stove and not more than 20 feet. Any advice pls? Don’t want to spend more than 100k
Thx😊
I have a brand new 2021 forest river model 3051 less then 500 miles on it with some upgrades. Never camped in. By the time we were able to go our health went bad. Need $100k for it. Needs gone asap and located in Indiana on the ohio line. Pm me if serious
Can u suggest 2 rv dealers in the south? Looking for toy hauler 30 footer…
I have friends that say they got an excellent deal whether it was buying a car or an RV. The reality is they got suckered and paid more than they should have. Have you ever heard the dealer say "You will never get a better deal somewhere else". Most dealers are know all the tricks and even the illegal ones. I once had a dealer switch h the interest rate on me when I got to the finance dept and all they said was "Oh sorry about the mistake" they were hoping I would not read the contract before signing. I been buying car and rv’s for 50 years and I know most of their tricks, they kept coming up with new ones. Here is a new one I came across a few years ago. After the agreement on price and interest rate when I got to finance they said that if I would buy the extended service warranty for $5000 they could get me a bette interest rate that it was a special promotion. With the lower interest the extended warranty would be almost free so why would I not take advantage of that. I saids no I think I will get my owe financing now. Remember the dealer will tell you anything to get the sale even if it is illegal. Like the wingman said look for a small family own business for the best deal and service. Do your home work compare pricing nation-wide. You don’t need to to buy local just to have a service center close by, the reality is when you break down and need service it will be a mobile tech or a service center outside your local area maybe thousand of miles away. To this day I have never broken down in my driveway or local area.
Do you recommend d the RV Dealers that youtube inserts into your clips????
Why would they expect return buyers…it’s because the product life cycle for their cheap RVs are about 10 years. Why I chose an Airstream…hope it’s the only one I buy.
Why would you buy new? I am looking for an older depreciated unit of good quality and thoroughly inspected.
Mr Wingman: once again your showing your ignorance. An Rv dealer is just like an auto dealer. But low and sell high. I’d be willing to bet you have never purchased an Rv at camping world. In my opinion they are a great starting point. A Hugh selection to chose and compare from. Yes there things to stay away from and questions that need to be asked, weather a small or big dealer. But to say people are ignorant by going to a big dealer shows your level of knowledge.
Financing is the only reason people choose Big RV retailer’s.
People want the champagne on that beer budget. Then comes the sales pressure and not being able to say “no”
Service will only get worse because retention with the younger generation is very difficult. Therefore most of the employees will have very little experience.
Good luck to all! 😀
I very much appreciate your passion for helping us ignorant folks learn what to watch out for before we end up making huuuuuge financial blunders!!!
My first class had tires that looked brand new. Camping world said yep look like new. First trip went to tire shop to check air pressure. Bad news your tires are 10 years old. 😂 yes crooked? But my fault for lack of knowledge.
Haven’t these people figured out 21st century technology and have access to Google and YouTube? “Duhhh..l don’t know what to do!” 🤦♀️😱
I don’t want to help someone who doesn’t take the time to at least try and help themselves! I see them all the time on the various page and forums l frequent .
“I’m buying a blah blah and know nothing about it. Please tell me everything l need to know.” 🤣🙄
Some people have no life and try and answer them. I have no such inclination or time for people like that.
Camping W would not do warranty work on a friends camper that he bought there. They told him to call the Manufacturer and get warranty on his roof.
Hey Allen…I enjoy your videos but I think you over generalize the gullibility of first time rv buyers…the majority buy rvs responsibly, and have adequate purchase experiences…having talked to probably 100’s of fellow rivers over the 40 yrs I’ve been camping very few have had any of these horror stories you present. I know these stories get more clicks on YouTube than happy stories of satisfied rivers, but maybe once in a while you could deliver a story that is more the norm for rvers.
The most common thing I’ve heard about Camping World is they treated us so well on the sales end, but when we needed service they sucked. Pretty much sums it up!
I found that CW service was OK for installing stuff you buy from them, but worthless for much else.
I would add that you can’t call all Camping World locations as bad. Our local stores have very high ratings and many long term employees. But, I agree with buying from an independent dealer. We bought from Stoltzfus RV and marine in West Chester, PA. Our salesman has been there 37 years and the service department has similar long term employees. It’s a great dealership that’s employee owned and treats customers like family.
Parkway RV in Ringgold GA. Is where I got a great deal
1 of the 2000 parts of puzzle is,,, very few pepole know the value of the penny… Just the way it is when folks wake up after 50 years of hard work to find out that alot of their efforts add up too very little…
Yes that some can afford this or that,,, but a larger portion can’t… If yha fail too plan your plan will fail…
Thanks for sharing Allan,,, All of us appreciate your efforts at keeping things in check the best you can in hopes that it saves 1 or more pepole from falling into a bear trap…
Some people may not get it. Keep it up.
MOST RV dealers are totally dishonest, especially the finance manager and salesman!! 4:21
Wingman, here is a video that does a very good job of explaining bad practices of some dealers. Hope you concur. (https://youtu.be/06C2SlpvKOY)
