Hello everyone and welcome back to this week’s episode of Red Elevator. Today I will be going in depth about kitchen design mistakes that you need to avoid when designing your dream kitchen. It is imperative that when you are designing a kitchen that you take into account the flow of the kitchen and how many people will be cooking at the same time. I highly recommend that you install two kitchen sinks, as having a prep sink is very useful. A recommendation that I always make is to take your kitchen cabinets to the very top of the ceiling which is a lot nicer and more pleasing to the eye. Don’t be afraid to eliminate upper cabinets, if you have enough cabinet space, it makes a much better looking and more high-end kitchen design. Also when you are planning your kitchen design write down all the items that you will be housing in the kitchen and find a specif place for each and every one of them. If you plan your kitchen in advance you will definitely have a better looking and certainly a more functional kitchen. Enjoy this episode!

I found this very valuable. I’m here for more. Thank you. New Subsrciber

I hate, hate, hate when people decorate with an eye for future resale. Unless you’re flipping the house, you need to decorate for your own tastes and lifestyle. 9/10 when you sell, trends will be different and purchasers will be looking for what is best going to fit their own style or can easily be renovated to that or what’s trendy at the time you actually sell.

    Perfect 🥰

  4. greenapple11 on October 8, 2021 at 8:03 am

Great video! But one can never have too many recess lights in the kitchen. I’m making mine illuminate like yankee stadium! 🤣🤣🤣

  5. CzyTV on October 8, 2021 at 8:04 am

Love the video! Definitely the cabinet height!

  6. Brad Sanders on October 8, 2021 at 8:04 am

Just subscribed to your channel Nina… Fantastic content! Question: Where can you purchase the large globe lights around minute 5:20 of this video? Thanks so much!

  7. iBelieveInGod on October 8, 2021 at 8:05 am

Totally agree with all your tips
    Based on daily life experiences
Even we decided in our next house prep kitchen has to be must.

  8. Susana Lopes on October 8, 2021 at 8:07 am

I’ve been following your videos from the other side of the pond for the last couple of months since I’m having to make decisions for a whole house, new build, with no experience . Your insights have been wonderful! I’m so inclined to go for the split globe pendant shown on your video ( for that kitchen you’ve designed)however they are contrasting against a black and white background, they look fantastic there , unsure they will work against an white wall/ cashmere cabinets?? I would really value your opinion. Thank you

Nina…I just put a match to my kitchen ‼️🤣🤣🤣
Starting over tomorrow. I ❤ you!

  10. Henry Canizales on October 8, 2021 at 8:10 am

Hi Nina, you look amazing in that dress 👗! Had to watch the video twice, couldn’t pay attention to what you were saying the first time!! 😉
Great suggestions, kitchens are my favorite to redo.

  11. thiddi Khan on October 8, 2021 at 8:10 am

Hey I follow you a lot, I have a question regarding kitchen Reno. I have small kitchen so I opted not to add island in my kitchen as it’s a narrow kitchen and physically only 1 foot wide island was the only possibility). My cabinets are about to arrive and I am already regretting not having an island. How should I feel better about it 😞

  12. Adalberto Rodriguez on October 8, 2021 at 8:12 am

You’re always so accurate in your videos! I have followed all your advice when designing my kitchen and I hope it will turn out great, I hope I can send you a picture or something once it’s ready in a couple of weeks.

  13. David Draguta on October 8, 2021 at 8:15 am

I love your videos, it teaches me a lot… hopefully soon I get to do what I love ( design kitchens and baths)
Thank you for your beautiful work!!

I would love to be your plumber. Still waiting for your call beautiful.

  15. Christine Kim on October 8, 2021 at 8:17 am

Love your videos! When you say range, do you also mean cooktops? I saw a nice one in your video so wanted to make sure these still counted!! We’re building a new house and I can’t decide if I want a professional style range OR a sleek modern cooktop (heavily leaning towards the 36” wolf gas cooktop that seems to disappear into the countertop and with the apron knobs) and matching oven. I feel like I am getting older and need to think about having to bend down constantly to get into the oven 😂

  16. Michelle on October 8, 2021 at 8:18 am

I am I the process of having a huge kitchen remodel. I really wanted a second sink, and my designer talked me out of it!

  17. Delynn Addams on October 8, 2021 at 8:20 am

Less hand movement. You are awesome.

  18. Tiarra B. on October 8, 2021 at 8:21 am

❤️Loved this video!!!!! These tips were so great! I especially loved the one about lighting! Statement lighting is so KEY to elevating a space and it’s too often overlooked😭😭😭 Question: I noticed you have a pot-filler in your kitchen. Do you utilize it often or would you say it’s more eye candy? I’m almost sold on them, but not 100% sure….😬😬😬

  19. Fortuna figueroa on October 8, 2021 at 8:21 am

Thank you! My kitchen is white with silver.

  20. ಕನ್ನಡ KannadaFirst on October 8, 2021 at 8:22 am

That makes a lot of sense.

  21. Kit Buys on October 8, 2021 at 8:22 am

Nina I love these videos! Can you please run through the pros and cons of induction ranges in kitchen design? I feel it’s too modern sometimes but I have breathing issues and natural gas ranges pollute the air. I like a cozier feel like French country. Just don’t know how to bridge it.

  22. Dragonfly On the Wall on October 8, 2021 at 8:24 am

Second sink!? Loool …you do realise we aren’t all rich with big houses right?
    I live in London! Lol

You may have a big house & money, but you really should give advice that carter’s for the majority lol

  23. Liz Howard on October 8, 2021 at 8:26 am

Yay!! Finally I heard someone else say you don’t need upper cabinets! Totally agree! I was one of those with 9 foot ceilings with cabinets that did not go to the ceiling. I had my contractor put in a soffit above the cabinets which gave them that “custom” look. No dust, no baskets,no fake plants. Unfortunately I can’t get past “resale value.”

  24. Grace Gardner on October 8, 2021 at 8:26 am

This is a wonderful video and top notch professional advice that most designers have not figured out yet. Though I prefer upper cabinets. One thing I don’t like are stoves in the center island. I hate it worse when they put a large ventahood above the island instead of a down draft. I like your kitchen layout Nina. It is similar to what I have done.

  25. iBelieveInGod on October 8, 2021 at 8:27 am

Haha cant agree more on Lightings 🙌🏻
I love lights more lights natural and bright daylight lights
Without sufficient lights i feel house feels dead

  26. Krista Anheluk on October 8, 2021 at 8:28 am

Thanks, getting ready to build a house and the kitchen IMO is the most important room

  27. Lao X's House Building Tidbits on October 8, 2021 at 8:28 am

This is one of my favorite subjects, and I agree with everything you said, Nina, especially about the range and the upper cabinets. I have seen buyers backing away from beautiful houses just because the kitchen range is not in proportion with the kitchen, and to change that would require replacing of all the cabinets which can be expensive. Also, I have seen 10/11/12 foot ceiling with the upper cabinets going all the way to the top and they look just absolutely beautiful.
I would like to add a few points:
    1. I prefer a range oven rather than wall oven. Wall oven looks nice and it is easier to access, but here in Canada every time we cook turkey or roast beef we have to open the windows even in the winter, because the smell just lingers for days. With a range oven we put the exhaust fan at low speed and the house smells fresh and clean.
    2. Speaking of range hood, I suggest getting one that is one size larger than the range itself (obviously you can only do this when building a new house or a complete kitchen reno). For example, if you have a 36" range you should get a 48" range hood, a 48" range you should get a 60" range hood, and so on. The 6 inch overhang on either side of the range can drastically reduce the amount of overflowing fume when you are stir frying.
    3. I prefer putting the dishwasher on the left side of the sink. I am right handed, so I normally hold the dirty dish in my left hand and a sponge in my right hand to wipe off any leftover before putting the dish into the dishwasher. If the dishwasher were on the right side of the sink it wouldn’t be as convenient.
Well, these are my personal preferences but I am open to other suggestions.

  28. gala daftary on October 8, 2021 at 8:28 am

This is a big country. Lots of other places that are not NY or LA have lots of space as well.

  29. Haethena Zeana on October 8, 2021 at 8:29 am

Hi Nina are you going to talk about laundry room??? Do we need à sink or not !!

  30. Shann13ful on October 8, 2021 at 8:29 am

The faucet!!! So true it’s not highlighted enough, and there’s so many choices! Can you a whole video on faucets? That’s would be awesome

  31. Xenia Argyropoulou on October 8, 2021 at 8:29 am

Thank you so much for all this advice!!Could you please tell us if not including an island in the kitchen design is a huge mistake or not? thank you in advance! you are amazing!!💌💌💌

  32. Sandy G. on October 8, 2021 at 8:29 am

Nina the microphone is picking up the clanging sounds of your bracelet(s), it’s distracting to me.

  33. Akeida Barrow on October 8, 2021 at 8:33 am

Ok NINA the fashion!!!! Also kitchen limbo is bad, love the courage to embrace a kitchen that functions to my needs I found out the hard way during pandemic need a prep sink more space for foot traffic ppl swamp the island youre always gonna need extra seating

  34. DAHJ on October 8, 2021 at 8:36 am

I disagree with the two sinks. We built in two sinks last time and only the prep sink was used. So I’m doing one massive sink this time around:)

  35. Rose Polzien on October 8, 2021 at 8:39 am

Great video 😊 could you please make a list or suggestions of those affordable beautiful ranges that you mentioned in the video please

  36. monica joy on October 8, 2021 at 8:40 am

I so enjoyed this video. Great advise.

ME AT 35: HOW MANY KITCHEN DESIGN MISTAKES WERE MADE IN MINE ? LET’S SEARCH FOR A VIDEO

  41. Interior Contractor on October 8, 2021 at 8:45 am

    Wow

  42. 5610winston on October 8, 2021 at 8:45 am

Informative, but clearly not intended for the 10’9" by 7’9" galley with 8’4" ceilings in my 1934 cracker box.
I have to make do with the space I have and have contrived an arrangement with two work triangles, but the aisle is barely wide enough for two people to pass. Cabinets to the ceiling is a great idea, though reaching anything more than six-foot-eight above the floor is awkward and a step-stool is a trip hazard at best.

  43. Sam Park on October 8, 2021 at 8:47 am

Great video! Would you design with 2 or 3 pendant lights for a 10 feet long kitchen island? Looking forward to watching your videos. 👍🏼

  44. JESS of ALL TRADES on October 8, 2021 at 8:48 am

    Really informative video 👍🏾

  45. Wendy K on October 8, 2021 at 8:48 am

I’m not a designer but did my due diligence before building our house and I’m happy to find out my kitchen design covers most of the very good points you make… even with a limited budget, I planned for each of my drawers and what I would store in each one of them and their placement

  46. Miss eee on October 8, 2021 at 8:49 am

Can you share the brand/paint color of your black lacquer kitchen cabinets? They are beautiful.

  47. Yolanda Caban on October 8, 2021 at 8:51 am

Good ideas. I’m in the process of remodeling my small kitchen and don’t know where to start. Thank you

100% on uppers to the ceiling! We are currently building a granny flat and I did the same in there. I would love to do a zoom call with you on some areas I’m second guessing?
