Couple Spends 8 Years Living the Van Life & Backpacking Around the World

Lauren & Craig are a couple of nomads from the UK who have been living the van life and backpacking on only $20 a day for over 8 years. They’ve visited over 50 countries so far and don’t plan to stop their long term travel streak anytime soon.

They typically work for 6 months, and then travel for 1 year using the money they earned. They apply for working holiday visas when visiting Western countries, which is how they manage to work while they travel.

They also buy camper vans when they visit countries where the accommodation is expensive, which allows them to spend next to nothing on accommodation while living in a van (they sell the van at the end of the trip to make their money back), and they also save money by eating out less and not going out drinking every night.

On average, the couple spends $10 each per day while backpacking and/or when living the van life.

During their travel time (when they’re not working), they go travelling and backpacking in countries where the cost of living is cheap, like India, Nepal, Southeast Asia, Central and South America.

We love this couple’s sense of curiosity and adventure, and are excited to follow their blog – Non Stop Travelling – and follow them on Instagram, to live vicariously through them while they explore the world.

You don’t know if you could handle the physical aspects of your current travels at 50 or 60? Heck, I’m 49 and I would smoke the both of you up a mountain!

life is just so unfair. no such thing as working holiday visas for the rest of us – they wont even let us through the airport without producing a freaking bank/ financial statement.
    life keeps breaking my heart.

The amazing story is that they’re still together after 8 years and not the nomad part. I’d slip away in a dark alley somewhere in Istanbul never to be seen again if I had to do this only with 1 single other person.

What you’re doing is so fantastic. . You are as old as you think . There is no age that one peaks in physical ability . You peak when you decide , there are pictures of people weightlifting at advanced ages and they are stronger than in their youth !

The young invincible lifestyle will come to a crashing reality if they ever need medical care w/o employer provided insurance. And the break even lifestyle means they have little to no savings. Their peers will enjoy a much higher quality of life later in life because of the work and savings they invested in when they were younger.

If you’re struggling to hike at 26, the key is to become more active – not less. Start running.

As someone who has traveled the globe for 56 years, I have found that 98% of all people are decent, it’s the 2% you have to watch out for wherever you are. The Canadaneese are no exception.

Great video, 8 years in 5 minutes, very time efficient. I could save a bundle if I limited my total spending to $20 a day, love it! So far I’m just a day hiker. This past weekend I went to Smith Rock, one of the natural wonders of Oregon.
