Guilty of all charges 😆 My advice for 20 year olds: (1) stay on trend – if you care – through accessories such as pillows, curtains, rugs etc. Buy neutral furniture pieces such a sofas and dress them up with color and patterns. (2) Everything looks so much smaller in stores – do not only measure but stage it out in your space (I used existing furniture, boxes etc – even plans cannot properly convey the feeling of space). (3) Actually spend some time living in your space to see how you would like to use it, how the light comes in etc. before you furnish. (4) Buy smaller, functional, modular pieces so you can reconfigure rooms based on your changing tastes and needs (am always recycling pieces and refreshing rooms like that!) (5) change out your rental (fluorescent) light fixtures and shower heads – will make it much more personal and luxurious. Also add lots of ambient lighting. That’s it. Love your videos. At 68 I would say to my twenty year old self- don’t start sleeping pills, save more money each month, travel more when younger, wait to buy better quality items, get rid of toxic “friends”, treat elders and listen to them they have lots of good advice.

Less is more. Not every surface has to have something on it. Learn to see the undertone of colors. Invest in quality statement pieces rather than a lot of cheap smaller ones. Start with neutrals and change accessories if you must. Your house should tell your story. Give it time.
20 year old self – do not buy the red plaid sofa, even though it looks like it was designed by Ralph Lauren for your new husband. You are going to get tired of that fabric quickly. Also, buy tightly woven matetial for all furniture, otherwise it will start unraveling. Do not buy floral linens. Again, you will tire of them quickly. And finally – do not accept wicker headboards, even when free. Your hair will get tangled in them. 😆
I’m so happy you guys made this video! I’m 20 and I’m moving into my first college apartment. I can’t change the beige walls, floor, or the yellow/ orange toned veneer wood desk and dresser that the room has so I’ve been binging interior design videos looking for tips. I want to get some long lasting pieces to transform the space, so thank you for your advice. Have you ever thought about doing a video about decorating for college students in their first apartments and how to make a nice space?

I turned 29 this year and we have moved quite recently to Houston and in the process of redecorating. What I love this time around is the fact that I had a plan for each room in the house, I’ve always been a measurer so that has never been a problem for us. But not having a plan actually leads to random purchases that "might" work in a particular spot or you’ll make it work somewhere else. lol. I would tell my younger self to enjoy the process and not try to rush it with buying budget friendly stuff just because you need to fill up. this is what I’m doing this time around. Taking my time to buy the things I love even if it means waiting and saving up some money first.
I wish I could tell my 20 something self that one day I would be more sentimental than I was then. And one day, the person who made me that thing, or gave me that thing, would be gone.

Save, go to France. Ship your furniture. Mahogany bedsteads for children, for eg.
Rouen for antiques.
Oh I can relate!! I used to buy the "in stuff" that a year later became the "out stuff" !! Now in my sixties I have moved to a new apartment and honestly not many furniture did make the journey with me. My dilemma now is trying to find furniture that I like, are classy and beautiful and not too expensive. They do not have to last me decades. Just to the end – my end 🙂 and I have some money left to travel and do the fun stuff too beside a beautiful new home that I love. Wish you many many more 22 years together and keep on giving us more of this good stuff.
my advice is; have fun. when you’re young you can get away with funky things that as an older adult makes you look childish. my first solo apartment was super tiny, a micro studio lol, I was so broke and I didn’t have a lot of space so I had boring things that were functional and some hand me downs but my curtains were where I had fun, I had some curtains from bed bath and beyond, there were stripped ones that were very colorful, I had 3 windows, 1 was the striped ones, the other 2 were colors from the stripes, then the bathroom and closet doors I removed and put curtains up so I had more space and I used a color from the striped curtain as well, it wasn’t totally my style but it was fun and bold, something I wouldn’t do now. I also had dressers from ikea, it was fin, I didn’t want classic stuff or things I knew would last for years and years because I knew I wouldn’t live there forever and I wanted to get married and have a family eventually so I didn’t invest money in things that might not fit my future location. I got things for the moment and not a future I wasn’t sure I’d have. Now I have a family and a house and we’re taking our time to decorate. anyway, for my 20yo self, I’m happy I didn’t spend a lot of money on things that I knew I didn’t want to keep later and I can get things that are stylish and functional for where I live now and I’m not just using things because I have them. we are kind of doing that with our bedroom furniture but we’re not stuck with a ton of older furniture that doesn’t fit our personalities or house that we brought from our single lives.
I moved in with my wife. She has a home she refurbished prior to my moving in. The flooring, lighting and hardware are all wrong and don’t even work together. It drives me mad! Trying to figure out how to work around those feature is so hard! She won’t change them either… It’s her home and she likes it that way and has her own opinion on design and mine is totally different. It makes it hard for me to feel at home. What’re you gonna do about that problem, nothing.

The most important thing that I learned (and had to be reminded of) over the years is to measure the space, doorways, and even the halls that the furniture must pass.
I had two episodes where I bought a sofa that I ended up paying to have the sofa hoisted over the apartment balcony — the first time during the initial delivery and again when I moved out of the apartment,
The second time happened decades later when a sofa could not be delivered to the intended room. This sofa was too tall for the ceiling over the landing and could not stand on its end so that it could be carried downstairs to my basement family room. I ended up having the sofa picked up and returned for a refund…fortunately…minus the delivery fee.

To answer your question, Advice to myself in my 20s, I know you love colors but that red couch and those orange walls will not age well together love lol instead go for colors in decorative art and items that are not so uh permanent. Also be patient with choosing what works. I like many others in this comment section was an impulsive buyer , still am in some respects lol always felt in a rush like “must have this now.” No little lady, relax , wait 24-48hrs after you first see that thing, whatever it is and then ask yourself if you still want it, this works with most items, clothing, and pretty much everything you want to instinctively purchase. We’re in a place where we have to use whatever we have
I would tell myself don’t buy "forever" furniture. Early on in our 33 year marriage we invested in a large oak bedroom set and an antique, extremely heavy oak Jacobean style dining room set, with the intention of never having to invest again. It’s true, they’re good as new. But I’m so tired of trying to decorate and update my house around them. And God forbid I mention painting anything, LOL! My husband still loves them which is why we’ll be stuck with them for the rest of our lives.
Loved blue and green Walls for over 20 years. Now Im 53 and need chalkwhite walls all over to calm down😊

I always avoid trends. If something is hot at the moment, great style, great color, I will not buy it. So have always wound up with something nobody else wants, but I like it and ask myself, what will this look like in 20 years. I LOVE Joanna Gaines’ barn doors and they make good sense, but I would probably go with a pocket door, and never shiplap, could be beadboard?

I would tell my younger self to nor feel like you must get on board with each distinct decorating style just because they are currently popular. I’m talking about my Mediterranean phase; Southwestern phase,, antiques phase, etc. Fortunately I didn’t always have the money to get 100% invested with all of these phases!
If you buy an electric recliner make sure there is an outlet nearby to plug it in 😬

The mistakes are part of the fun too. For most of us that’s how we learn right
We had themed rooms as a kid. A theme around one thing. In "La Chambre des Marins" it was a ship’s brass porthole. The room was panelled in oak and the Chintz curtains were sailing scenes (charcoal greys and dark blues). One wall was wine red, as were the window frames. My father was a very bold decorator. Parquet floor, and Persian rugs in the same colours as the curtains and wall. The rugs determined the rest. Also read garden designers on colour. The eye picks out the theme. Decide the colour and play on.
I remember you once showed pictures from when you were young, I think it was a video about how much you moved, and everytime I see both of you I think "she looks the same as back then, she’s gorgous, hasn’t aged a day and he looks better now, better hairstyle and glasses complements his face ☺ you look great, you seem great people who are made for each other 😉
Hi Valentina and Jack. I just want to say that I love your videos because it’s wonderful to watch the dynamic between the two of you. Jack is such a sweet husband, so full of compliments for you.
I’m in my mid forties and still have young kids, we’ve traveled quite a bit and have move (most likely) more times than you guys have.
In my 20s I was a bit of a nomad and wasn’t furnishing my home much but with 4 younger kids starting in my 30s, I’m happy not to have invested in very expensive pieces that would bring me stress if scribbled on or used as forts. So one advice I would give to people with kids is to buy pieces that you’ll feel comfortable the kids will use and possibly misuse, these may not be forever pieces!
I’m hoping to have a kid-free space soon where I can have some classic design pieces to enjoy now that we’ve moved (again) to what will be our long term home.

My best advice would be to spend more money on your mattress than your couch. … ..you spend a third of your life on it…. and your back will thank you in your in your old age
OMG, my beautiful couch with the carved wooden legs did not fit through the door! The back legs had to be cut off (ouch!) and reattached. Did I learn? No! The next couch was curved and you could remove the legs, so it had to fit, right? After getting it stuck in the staircase, I had to hire movers who punched a hole in the plaster, then it fit lol.

There’s no substitute for well made furniture. Wait that extra month or two of savings to buy the real deal instead of the particle board version. Or have a plan to graduate from the cheap stuff and feel good about giving that stuff away when you have the money to replace it.
Definitely buy classic and quality! Also love the real plants advice, there is a plant for every level of plant parenting!

This video is hilarious. To think! To think Valentina, of all people, was just slapping neon blue paint on the walls. I am not going to claim I didn’t go through the same phase, but the queen of black and white running through her house slip-slapping colors willy nilly is quite an image.
Take care of your antique pieces and don’t sell them bc you’ll want them again later and you won’t be able to find them for the anywhere near the price you did!
