Agree with some, esp multitude of pillows on a bed and oversized lighting, but picking on/criticizing accent walls seems like a broken record to me. This criticism pops up every couple years, yet the accent wall persists!! For good reason—most people do it more for themselves for the pop and variety, not so that they can seem "cool" to others. Some of the examples you showed were just beautiful and so well done. I think the discernment should be more about the quality and choices, not the feature itself.
I use my stool when i blow dry my hair (bad back lots of hair)…and it is white leather basket weave look and teak (it’s fabulous). Nuff said? lol I reduced my pillows to 43. lololol the oversized lighting looks like a spaceship haha
Can’t put your feet up on a curved sofa
Glad that someone finally said "Enough!" with the pillows. I have never been a fan of masses of them….I always wondered what people do with them at night. Throw them in a pile on the floor? Always seemed kind of silly to me.
Who has counter space for decor? I have a middle class suburbia kitchen, and I’m constantly fighting to declutter the counters, not add vignettes. And accent walls work for people who are great at accessorizing or who consulted a professional because those are tricky on their own.
You def need something outside of some tubs without any place to put your products
What’s your opinion on Johnathan Adler?
I have aquasonic and love it. It’s the only system I’ve found available to the public that filters microplastics. It also makes your water taste better.
Good morning Nick. I thought of you and LOL when I saw that round white boucle couch last night on Murders. Love your channel!
I live in scandinavia. We have an exellent style worldfamous for its simplicity. And thats whats work in the long run.
In defense of accent walls: Nick, I hear you, they became super popular 15 years ago, but I disagree that it’s a design element that’s stuck in a particular era. First of all, it’s a renter-friendly (easy to repaint) and an effective way to create visual interest in your space, especially if you don’t have/can’t afford quality artworks for your walls. You, yourself, appear to have a lovely deep blue accent wall BEHIND YOU. Just sayin’!
Bathroom stools… if you have one of those stand alone soaking tubs, where do you put your shampoo and stuff so you can reach it? The tubs are beautiful, but it seems like you need some other piece of furniture to make them functional.
What I would love to see is functional stools for the bathroom that are also stylish. Why do so many disability aids have to be so ugly?
Stop saying milking stool!
Thank you for including pillows.
I particularly find excessive pillows on beds annoying – where are you supposed to put them when you go to bed – on the floor ?
😂Love your side comments though Some people need stools for mobility issues. ie: to sit on for safety reasons. 😂Cacophony of pillows- cacophony relates to loud, harsh discordant sound.
More like: a plethora of pillows
Don’t you have an accent wall behind you?
Well, a smaller bathroom stool (what you reference as an "antique milking stool") IS necessary. I use one that I simply have near my tub, next to my toilet. Yes, you got it. It is a more attractive version of the "squatty potty." Say what you will but the squatty potty DOES work. My stool (no pun intended) is a more attractive version of the squatty potty.
So many decorating tv shows end up filling up rooms with so much visual cutter, Waste of money OH YES. My gradmother would always comment,,, who’s gonna dust all this stuff
I’m still hoping for really nice looking "milking-stoles" that do not decay, bc sitting in the shower is really nice and if you want, it’s useful for shaving 🤷🏼♀️
lamps in the kitchen….no thanks…..unless you have so much money you don’t cook and your kitchen is just to look at
I hate lamps on kitchen counters.
Pampus grass alert. Went to Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay. In the Flower Fantasy there was a huge arrangement with dried pampas grass, thought of your advice Nick. You are 100% right, even there.
Great video- and good reminder that accent walls are Not necessary for a well designed room LOL
My wife uses one of these in the shower to put her foot on to shave her legs. Many showers have a built in bench for this, ours does not.
I’m trying to pare down all the ‘stuff’ we seem to have. It’s a bit of a balance though. I’m trying to donate as much as I can. I hope to end up with beautiful things that were gifts and photos of people I love. I find that I can actually ‘see’ my house better now there’s not so much in it!
Ok. I can get on board with the stool in the bathroom. I love taking baths, and a stool would be very convenient for putting a glass on or my book.
I thought stools in shower are for shaving your legs:D
"Very 2005!!!"
I know this is not stand up comedy, but Nick is so funny! I cracked up more than once.
Not loving the one pillow on the bed though.
came to the comments specifically for the accent wall reactions and feeling affirmed. guess a lot of us are "so 2005" and cool wid it!!! The examples he showed in the vid were beautiful. Also, isn’t that wall in the back of Nick’s apartment technically an accent wall with molding? It looks great!
Whoa some super judgement happening here. I think it depends on the book entirely.
I feel seen (pillow comments) 🤣🤣🤣 but it’s true lol!
I love accent walls no matter what. Forever and ever.
I think those little stools next to bathtubs could be a hazard.
Your short video about "know your design style" — really important but can you do a video that homes in on less "perfect" renditions of design styles? I mean, I see Japandi, etc. But that’s not real life. And it’s soulless — all of those perfectly designed spaces.
But there are stylish homes that are so inviting, and REAL, and yet….it isn’t clear what the style is. For example this tour from Apartment Therapy. This woman’s home is perfection (in the sense that it isn’t Architectural Digest, and it’s 600 sq ft, and it’s still comforting and super stylish). But what IS it?

What is it with Americans and these couches placed against the bed? I mean, why? And why there? I just don’t get it.
Haha, "antique milking stool". But I like those, they look so rustic! 💖 😂
So, the slat accent wall i’ve mulled over for the past year…nix. gotcha 😢
Omg Nick hmmm is that a accent wall behind you ? 😂
About the bathroom stools. I see it more like a side table/end table. I need something to put my phone/glass of wine/book on, when I am in the bathtub. If you have a ledge for that, awesome! That’s preferred. But sadly, until we renovate our bathroom, we don’t. So that’s really helpful. But i would not use it just for decor only.
Agree on all the other stuff, tho.
I literally want my house to look like an episode of Star streak TNG. I think you would hate it. 😂
Who unpacked my living room lamps? Um why did you put them in the kitchen?
Table lamps in the kitchen counters are ridiculous. If someone only buys take out or frozen meals heated in microwave, one might add a table lamp for looks. But if one cooks, however careful, there is some splatter and fine mist of incredients on the pan as fat. That will float in the air to anything on the counter. Table lamps with fabric shades will become very fast stinky, spotted disasters. Also one of Nick’s sample pictures has a table lamp near a sink and faucet. Imagine to wash a cookie sheet etc that do not fit in the dishwasher and try to avoid not splattering the lamp.
I think the oversized lighting is one of those things that only looks good in really large spaces, and even then some of the examples of "good" ones feel oppressive
i have an accent wall as i love darker colors, but the whole room dark would not be smart as i’m told by so many people….too much goth vibes i’m told. It is the focal point, the windows are on that wall with boho curtains. So Nick Lewis what sayeth thou?
I love you and your channel so much, @Nick, and yet, I still love pillows. All the pillows, all the time. Couch pillows, bed pillows, chair pillows, floor pillows… pillows, pillows, pillows. Do they annoy pretty much everyone, including my dog? Yes, yes they do. Does an egregious amount of pillows make me stupidly happy? Again yes.
This is so true. They all need to go.
Lamp in kitchen not my jam
