Nobody asked but in today’s video I am sharing some popular IKEA products that you shouldn’t buy. Im also giving some alternatives to these items since Ikea has such a massive selection of things. Mixing higher end pieces is definitely the key to elevating some of my suggestions. You can find lots of decorating ideas if you search for specific ikea pieces on the internet so don’t feel like you have to buy everything from Ikea.

The sinnerlig pendant was designed by Ilse Crawford. It’s simple, and everyone has it. But it’s because it’s already iconic and an Ikea classic. I agree with you that there are other IKEA pendant that are nice or nicer than Sinnerlig, but I still think it’s a valid piece of design

Do a version for parents!!! Cleanable but still beautiful! My biggest struggle with furniture is my children 😅 maybe I’m doomed to not have great furniture

Isn’t the issue…. When buying IKEA furniture, you have to get it early before everyone else does? The other light fixtures you advice are new, what makes that your neighbors don’t have that already hanging on their ceiling.

If I was getting the Alex, I’m purely looking for functionality that doesn’t look awful. My office space/desk isn’t going to be meant to be seen all the time, it’s going to be meant to be used. But I would be open to alternatives on that. My desk in my company’s office is made out of folding table legs, old solid core doors, and old metal filing cabinets. We needed lots of space to spread out large prints, sturdy, and cheap. I’ve been at the company a little over three years and apparently these setups have been here 20. They’re not glamorous, but they are extremely functional.

The sheep skin rugs are Australian so I think they’re probably ok.

Were you a fly on my wall in my bedroom!? That malm bed killed my TOES!!! Also the headboard started falling apart after a few months of us leaning against it

  15. xia kala on September 5, 2021 at 11:16 pm

Everyone I know has a Kallax. I liked Billy more, but Kallax has the ultimate storage capacity for books. I own two of the big ones and it holds our books perfectly. I will soon need a third one. It’s not my favorite style but the ones I really liked for the amount of books I have were more expensive than all my books combined. I generally can’t find many ideas for too many books.

  16. Steffi Iwas on September 5, 2021 at 11:17 pm

How comfortable a bed is depends on the matress and the slatted frame (mostly). Or are you lying directly on the bedframe?

  17. Nyllil on September 5, 2021 at 11:17 pm

What’s with the horrible pronunciation of "Kallax"? It has two L’s in it, not one.

And are you kidding me about the Strandmon? The Färlöv is fricking ugly as hell and mega clunky.
I have a small living room and my Strandmon in Lingbo isn’t clunky at all and looks way better than the monstrous Färlöv.

And Malm came in 2 variants. A lower version and a higher one to put those drawers underneath. And ye, I stubbed my toe several times on my Malm bed, once really badly. It was also really tiring to get out of the Malm, since I had the low one. Now I have the Hemnes and it was such a change.

    That’s your opinion
I love every item from ikea

  19. Yana Dunne on September 5, 2021 at 11:19 pm

Hey Arvin, would you add in a living room besta TV stand and also the fjallbo shelf unit? They would be in separate parts of the room, not one beside the other. Thanks. Really curious what your take on this one is. Thanks 🙂

  20. grizem3 on September 5, 2021 at 11:21 pm

    you are juvenile, disliked

  21. Abigail H on September 5, 2021 at 11:22 pm

FYI – Ikea is discontinuing the Farlöv line. I was waiting for months for the white covers to come back in stock before finding that out. However, what I was able to do was order just the frames, and I got covers from a third party on Etsy. It turned out great, and I found that you can get covers for pretty much any ikea sofa on Etsy in any color/fabric you want. I found that this is also an awesome way to make your ikea sofa not so obviously ikea – get a custom cover.

Sheep are actually a large food source in other areas of the world, so probably taken from sheep being slaughtered for food, same as leather is from cows.

  24. Little Miss Muffet on September 5, 2021 at 11:26 pm

Don’t buy anything from ikea. It’s overpriced cheap stuff.

I’ll buy a curtain rod from there. Even the quality of their curtains have gone downhill. So I wouldn’t even buy that

  27. TheSoupdragon1968 on September 5, 2021 at 11:32 pm

Honestly! An interior is a very personal thing, yes buy both old and new, mix and match, don’t buy a room full of IKEA…. But he is talking out of the back of his head!!?

  28. Gabe Travis on September 5, 2021 at 11:35 pm

I used to own the Malm bed. I loved it and I’m incredibly stylish. I think you are trying too hard to be trendy and that’s a horrible designer trait. It’s not always about the "piece" but what you do with it. You seem to only prefer simple and I think that’s your taste…simple. Broaden your decor horizons.

  29. mzcyberbat on September 5, 2021 at 11:35 pm

Those sheep skin things are not soft enough. Don’t buy IKEA sofas. They are really uncomfortable.

  30. David Boucher on September 5, 2021 at 11:37 pm

Disagree on the Kallax, as I like simple, basic, utilitarian furniture — and the Kallax is perfect for storing vinyl records.

  31. Bonnie Voyage on September 5, 2021 at 11:38 pm

Why does he have so many thumbs down? this guy is so funny!!!

  32. Mathilde B on September 5, 2021 at 11:38 pm

I have this black tv bench. You can’t really see the devices I store there (dvd player, broadband box…) because they’re black. I’ve put the other stuff in storage boxes to make them more easily accessible and keep the appearance sleek. So for example if I need a dvd, I just pull out the box and then put it back in.

  33. Opera Mom on September 5, 2021 at 11:39 pm

Hate to tell you… but you probably need to review… recheck Ektorp sofa was Discontinued! In its place Uppland. Omg.. sister bought waaaaaayyyyy nicer! Perfect for homes with family .. basically perfect dupe of pottery barn PB sectional. Why? Way improved! Now with Sinuous coiled springs plusher seats, deeper depth, higher height, easier on and over slip covers. It’s beefy, can sleep and lounge on it now and 10 year warranty!!! Hated Ektorp… but this sofa… WOW!

The Strandmon chair is so confortable I actually sleep on it instead of sleeping on the bed when my back is really hurting. Personally I feel that it is much more elegant too.

Arvin stops in the middle to montage a drink of wine. 0 fucks given. I give 10/10

  38. leeleescraps on September 5, 2021 at 11:45 pm

Alex drawers are popular with scrapbookers & crafters for their craft rooms. It’s cheaper than custom & give more money to fill them with more crafting supplies.

  39. April on September 5, 2021 at 11:45 pm

NAUR the Fjallbo is one of my favorite sets, I love the industrial look of it and I would totally buy that tv console lol. I love that whole set and wish they had full size matching desk like the writing desk they have. There is a definitely a way to style it better. I don’t really care if the things are hidden inside it tbh. I think it can work if you have a modern (not rustic) loft space with industrial vibes. Alas, I live in a log house and I don’t want to do traditional LODGE decor so I’d like to incorporate a bit of industrial to it at some point.

  40. Tammy Ng on September 5, 2021 at 11:46 pm

i have kallax! hahahaha oh dear…

  41. Julienna SK on September 5, 2021 at 11:47 pm

10:25 I guess that this chair is so popular because it feels so comfy to sit there. We tried it in IKEA and we looooved it. So cozy. Haha, I almost fell asleep there. Sadly, we have no space for it, living in a small apartment… 🙁 The alternative does not look as nice and also is not so comfortable for your back.

I was disappointed by this video – you should write better titles for video. I thought, you are talking about things that are damaged / not working properly. Maybe "DON’T BUY THESE FROM IKEA – better alternatives from household designer" would be better video title and save time for people, who are rather interested in technical details than fashion. 😉

  42. Jamace Dickerson on September 5, 2021 at 11:48 pm

Just bought a bunch of Kallax to build a bed frame. 🤷🏽‍♀️. I like them better then the other options. 37 going on 17. Lol

  43. Harry Hagan on September 5, 2021 at 11:48 pm

nah, KALLAX shelves will always have a special place in my heart.

  44. V M on September 5, 2021 at 11:49 pm

I thought you would offer some reasons to avoid certain pieces, not just talk about whether the item is ‘stylish’. Some things are very functional. Not all pieces not to make a statement.

  45. AD 28 on September 5, 2021 at 11:50 pm

🤷🏿‍♀️entire home is basically Ikea… except I did get a good couch from somewhere else

  46. Benjamin Hernandez on September 5, 2021 at 11:50 pm

I’m on a Malm bed. As a basic sofa base, it works. I got a firm queen mattress from Costco to go on top and added the drawers. It’s fine.

  48. Senshi00 on September 5, 2021 at 11:51 pm

Thank you, glad I saw this before buying Kallax. The alternatives you mentioned look so much better and would fit my room better as well.

  49. Katz on September 5, 2021 at 11:53 pm

The first thing I would say is, buy what you like and who cares who else has it. Make your home the way you want it. I don’t know anyone that has the same things I get. And if I did, I would still buy what I like.
Everything at IKEA is customizable. Go to IKEA hackers and get inspiration. So make it your own. It just depends on what style you are looking for in your space.
I do agree on the big pattern bedding. And you should never never NEVER do this on your sofa either. Get that for the throw pillows. I found the perfect sofa and it’s the Lindome. There’s no fussy back cushions and it come in two beautiful colors in velvet. It’s not a lint magnet like some of the other fabric sofas. It’s classic and well made and very comfy. And the price is good.
Oh and by the way, I work at IKEA and I don’t have everything IKEA. I don’t even know anyone that would buy everything from just one store.
