Hanging a Hammock in a Minivan (an experiment)

Hanging a Hammock in a Minivan (an experiment)

Can you hang a hammock in a minivan to sleep in? I rented a minivan to try it out.

Do you suggest a single or double sized hammock?

I do like the diagonal lay in that empty van. As you set it up, the first thing I noticed and was going to mention in my comment was that can’t be good for the door seals, but you discovered it right away. Your concern for the hatch hinge may be unfounded. Since the rope/paracord is going around the body putting shear stress on the hinge, you should be fine. The hatch puts much more stress on the bolts/welds than the hammock. I know you’re supposed to lay diagonally in those types of hammocks, but I do like to lay on my side mostly, so I just make myself into a "Z" shape and that does a pretty good job of flattening out the hammock. I have 2 years 4 months in a hammock so far, but it has been difficult for me to get out of a double the past month after injuring both knees in a backpacking accident. I slid off the trail hundreds of feet above a creek after dark while my left foot initially stayed on the trail. Can you say wishbone. I’m only mentioning this because an injury can make sleeping in a hammock difficult. I now appreciate how sleeping on an elevated sturdy surface does have its advantages above and beyond the pressure points they create. One of the benefits of sleeping in a hammock is there are no pressure points IMO.

I’ve never slept inside my own Toyota Sienna…but now you have me wanting to try it! My best naps have been in hammocks! They are awesome!

hi I know its been a year and you probably know that paracord stretches and will eventually snap over time

Congrats on your weight loss!! Also that is a genius idea ๐Ÿ’ก makes me wonder if/how two people count do this in a vehicle. I may or may not be considering van life lol

Terrific video, thank you so much! I too want a Toyota Sienna (or a Kia Sedona) to live in and to sleep in a hammock. This is the 2nd really good video I’ve seen about hanging a hammock in a minivan. The other vid showed how to modify the hammock and also how to hang it without the straps/ropes being visible from outside the van. It’s by Captain Knots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFUASin4Bh8

    ps, new subbie here.

Hey, I love your hammock idea! Have you made any adjustments? Have you enjoyed living in a minivan?

I have a herniated disk and have been sleeping in a hammock for YEARS. Every time I sleep in a regular bed my back pain flares up. You have got me really wanting a minivan now. Lol..
