Historic New Orleans Architecture | Creole Cottage Home Tour

Historic New Orleans Architecture | Creole Cottage Home Tour

In this video, Andrew and Kayla, tour guides with Free Tours by Foot, take you on a walk through a historic New Orleans creole cottage home. MORE NOLA TOUR VIDEOS https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpNEdLF6RWV3oDPK7SD9GOttlhvaGBsh2.

Creole cottages are a staple of New Orleans architecture and this style of home is very synonymous with the city. Kayla, who is also a local real estate agent (contact detail below) walks you through one such home that happens to be on the market at the time of this video’s publication.

You’ll likely be charmed by all of the historic features in this house, from the wood floors to the 6 fireplaces, and all of its hidden nooks and crannies.

This video is not just for those considering buying a home in the city but is also intended for those who are looking to understand better what they might be renting when they visit the city.

That would have been coal gas used in the house until the late 50s. It burns dirty. I suspect the ceilings were almost black black.

  2. Fredrick Taylor on February 15, 2022 at 10:26 pm

I love watching your tours. And the house tour was just as fine.
Please do more . I will be watching . Thank you !

Is this in Treme’? I’d like to know about the original owners!

  5. MommaS on February 15, 2022 at 10:28 pm

Stop encouraging outsiders to move in. They think they love a certain neighborhood and then they fight to change it. They don’t usually understand New Orleans, the culture or the people.

  13. SA From NC on February 15, 2022 at 10:42 pm

Is that house on Esplanade ? (question answered, I knew I had seen that house…lol) Awesome house and example of that type of home in NOLA.
Would love to see some shotgun houses. There are some great examples of those types of homes in Lousville, Ky. as well.

  14. Jeanne Clark on February 15, 2022 at 10:43 pm

I love house tours! Especially when the homes have been kept as historic as possible. This is a great way to learn colloquial details about different house styles–thanks!

  15. Sue S on February 15, 2022 at 10:43 pm

I love your channel. This video was so good!! Wow that home was gorgeous! Love the staircase. The decor was beautiful and gave us so much to look at. That backsplash in the kitchen was so pretty also.

Was all this brick really exposed originally or is that a modern affectation?

  25. Seaside gma on February 15, 2022 at 10:54 pm

I loved this charming cottage ! It is truly. delightful that the love of historical values shows thru✨

  26. Keir McCoy on February 15, 2022 at 10:56 pm

Really interesting to see inside a historic home and get a different part of NOLA than tourist areas. More home tours that touch on the architecture would be really cool.

  27. nokesbob2 on February 15, 2022 at 11:00 pm

Oh yes please. More of these. I read James Lee Burke and his books are centered in New Orleans and his description’s make me feel like I’m there. I also know there are a lot of authors and actors that live there. Famous chefs. I would love to see and hear about all of this. But seeing the actual housing of the area is a huge thing. Thank you for including this.

  28. Jaime Flowers Ashley on February 15, 2022 at 11:02 pm

I LOVED this! Moar homes, please!

  29. Petter Zachrisson on February 15, 2022 at 11:03 pm

Is exposed brick a historical thing or was the brick covered in plaster or wooden boards?

  30. Michelle Morrow Allen on February 15, 2022 at 11:04 pm

Gorgeous house! In the downstairs “reading nook”, I especially loved seeing the picture of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in my beloved hometown.

    Love your videos:)! ♥️♥️♥️

  32. Amber Hallacy on February 15, 2022 at 11:05 pm

So yeah, I’d have to have those fireplaces made functional…my OCD would drive me up the wall, otherwise. Gorgeous historic house!

Love the house tour and history; I just wish the cameraman would show more of the surroundings instead of mostly focusing on the hosts.

  39. James R on February 15, 2022 at 11:11 pm

    0:57 Cars driving backward????

  40. Jeff Forbess on February 15, 2022 at 11:14 pm

Gorgeous house. Couldn’t pay me to live in Tremé. NOLA is historically one of the highest crime per capital cities in the US, often rivaling Chicago in murder numbers. Be careful where you look. We have a tendency to treat NO like a kitten. It’s a Tiger. That’s what makes it special.

  41. D.Y. Phillips on February 15, 2022 at 11:15 pm

What happened to the bathroom and bedroom?

  42. Flaming BagOfCrap on February 15, 2022 at 11:16 pm

She reminds me of an elementary school teacher and I’m a wake n baker. I’ll sit quietly with my juice box as she teaches us about Nola. Not a problem. Maybe because she’s animated? She rocks her facial expressions.

  43. Denna V on February 15, 2022 at 11:16 pm

I loved this episode so much. Please do more of these showing the flavor of each Neighborhood. We plan to purchase a small cottage or apartment in the next year so this is so cool to get your local perspective.

  44. maria yolanda diez vera on February 15, 2022 at 11:17 pm

    Love it so well preserved

  45. maria figiel-krueger on February 15, 2022 at 11:18 pm

Thank you for this tour- it’s spaces like these that many tourists really want to see and don’t have the opportunity. I REALLY appreciate you showing it to us. I absolutely LOVE the historic nature of these houses and you two are the best guides. THANK YOU!!!! Cannot express enough how much I enjoyed this

  46. Sharon Claridge on February 15, 2022 at 11:20 pm

This was fascinating to watch – The architecture is very different to what we have here and it was lovely to see how they had kept little pieces of the history while making it 21st century useable! Does the US have an equivalent of Listed Buildings like the UK? Like a prohibition to changing some (or all, depending on the grade) of the features of the building. I’d love to see more interior house or building tours, this was great 🙂

  47. Kev York on February 15, 2022 at 11:21 pm

I have the same house as the one on the shelf !

  48. Joshua Wilson on February 15, 2022 at 11:21 pm

I’ve been in love with this cottage for months! So great to see these details outside of a photo 💜
