How a Coleman lantern is made.
More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman. And the company he founded would change life in America.
The Coleman lamp was invented by 1909 and the famous lantern in 1914, and since that time more than 60 million of the lanterns have been sold throughout the world. Coleman is the market leader in lanterns and stoves for outdoor recreational use, and it has created a loyal consumer following for a broad range of insulated food and beverage containers, sleeping bags, backpacks, tents, outdoor folding furniture, portable electric lights, and other recreational accessories. The company’s Powermate unit produces portable generators and portable and stationary air compressors. Coleman also makes and markets book bags, backpacks, and related products under the Eastpak and Timberland brand names. Coleman products are sold in more than 100 countries worldwide, with international sales accounting for about one-third of overall revenues. Although its stock is publicly traded, the Coleman Company is controlled by Sunbeam Corporation, which owns 79 percent of the company.

Hope this is one of the companies that continues making their lamps in the USA.
I’ve got half-a–dozen of them in the garage…only one right now without a broken globe…but not counting the glass and the mantles (they become ash, after all) I don’t think I’ve ever broken one, and they always have worked for me…just clean fuel, and a few pumps…great tools that are dependable! Now, if metal things would quit hitting them in the truck bed, and breaking the globes! 😉

It’s always been Coleman green -except when it was Coleman red, or sears blue or sears gold or Coleman tan
O why why I thought they only made the coolers here I guess they make the lanterns here as well. That’s awesome I live here in Wichita ks
Made in Wichita Kansas USA, They can be found pretty cheap used, but often need cleaning and minor repairs. Propane and now LED had taken over the game. Coleman white gas /camp gas is hard to beat .
So, Coleman lamps are basically a rip off.

I love these i was in mexicali when the 7.2 earthquake hit the city turned the power to check lines for 2 or 3 days it was really dark at night one neighbor had one and it lid his whole house after that i started buying them cant pass them at garage sales

I’ve used Coleman products for work and play for over fourty years, I have 15 lanterns, oldest is a 1949 228d… Works still. Found it in the dump with a near mint 1959 200a, that works too, they all work! My wife just bought me a new 639 c. Never had a brand new one before.
1 bought a lantern when i was 18, im 46 and still use it regularly. Now i have 3 lamps.2 vintage, the one i bought and a 3 burner and 2 burner stoves and today i just got a catalytic heater off e bay. They all reside in my homade camper now and get used all the time. Still american made and still the best camping option out there.
I saw a useful tip online the other day. It was suggested to put a few turns of electrical tape on the bail where it hits the fount. That will stop the bail from dinging the piant every time you set the lantern down and the bail falls over.
I think today the quality control has gone down and they use cheap parts but still feed off their brand name. I bought a Coleman Northstar lantern in 2003 and after 5 years the Piezzo ignition module just disintegrated. Cheap crappy plastic. This shouldn’t be in a £170 lantern. I can still use it but have to use meths to light it.
I’ve got the one my parents used when we would camp from around ’79 or ’80. Still works well and holds pressure. I even have the box it came in. I also have the Coleman stove we used for camping. Both excellent products
It’s a wonderful feeling when you get one you feel like you want to go camping of go outside to turn it on ,I have 5 when the power went out my neighbors were using flashlights and I was using my Coleman lantern and they were wondering why I had do much light.
They used to use Thorium in the mantles years ago. They switched to Ytterium because it wasn`t radioactive.
Still make in America and made to last unlike most things today thanks coleman keep up your craftmanship it shows in your product!!
I think everyone should have at least one of these and a good supply of fuel and mantles, and be familiar with how to use it. A stove that runs on the same fuel as your lamp is a good thing to have on hand as well. A very simple step every household can take for disaster preparedness as well as recreation. I think after the recent situation in Texas we can see the utility of a non-electric light that can run on a variety of fuels (gasoline, white gas, and even clear kerosene) that puts out a large amount of light as well as quite a bit of heat. I’ve rarely had to use these indoors in emergencies so always be mindful of ventilation and have a working battery powered CO detector. I’ve never had a coleman lamp set one off although you can smell it running a little.

Earliest camping memories are of dad lighting the coleman lantern and it lighting up the whole area. It always made me feel better. That signature smell and hiss of the lamp working too.

I have 5 Coleman lanterns & 1 Coleman stove, all purchased from 1980 to 1991. They all still work. I had to send my model 275 (purchased in 1983) back in 1994 due to it flooding when I went to light it. Coleman fixed it for a dirt cheap price & sent it back in record time. Needless to say, I’m very happy with my Coleman lanterns & stove.
Every one should buy one , they’re USA made and they last for ever and you’ll never know when you may need it , it’s America’s history that you can hold in your hands and can get you out of bad situation .
Picked up a 1970 220F at yard sale, works great for hunting season and power outages.
Loved my coleman lamp but those mantels were so delicate. Knock the lamp too hard and the mantel will be a puff of chalky dust.
Sadly, lanterns like this are just about a thing of the past. Even propane lanterns are rarely ever used anymore. Wasn’t long ago that when you went to a sporting goods store like Academy, you saw a whole aisle of gas or propane lanterns. Not anymore. You might find a few lanterns sitting somewhere in the camping section. But battery and solar powered lights have taken the place of this piece of History. As an avid camper myself, it’s been years since I’ve used any kind of Coleman lantern. I still have four of them sitting, being unused. I just can’t bring myself to get rid of them.
I have to ask. Why are the globes not made by Pyrex anymore? These made in china ones crack when will sometimes crack while the lantern is on!

coleman lanterns are just the best.. I’ve had a few over the years and never let me down.. so reliable.. you can stick yer new fangled lanterns that take batteries . old stuff are the best.. better built and reliable..
I love anything coleman. I have a miniature coleman keyring lantern and a micropacker. I wish i could afford one of these! I just love them.
I have several. The oldest was made in ’61. It still works great. How many other products last that long?
I sold these for over a decade nice to see the rest of the story on how, where and the history.
