REALLY needed this video! Thank you! Looking for an area rug for our home in Hawaii and worried about moisture and it holding up with me working out on it. Love the texture of jute. Can’t imagine laying on my bareback working out on it. LOL Thank you for the advice!

Does anyone know what style you would call the rug at 8:12? It’s beautiful and I think it would fit myspace well but I have no idea what to search for to find something like that

I have a small living room that is a pentagon, almost triangle (diagonal corner fireplace) and I have no idea how to put a rug in it. Parallel with the fireplace which is the focal point? Parallel with four of the five edges?

Thx for the content Nick ❤ could you please make a video regarding vacuum robot friendly rugs 😅. It’s really a challenge for me knowing, as they can not climb over a specific thickness like 1 cm which excludes a lot of interesting fluffy thick rugs 😢.

I bought an antique-looking rug in soft blues/teals/lavenders/fuchsias to coordinate with my Tiffany’s “Magnolias and Irises” print. The rug is 5×8’. Problem is, I think it’s a tad small. I have three pieces of furniture (love seat, and two plush chairs, all shades of blue), with the loveseat against one wall, and the chairs are at an 📐 at each opposite corner. (Front legs of all pieces on the rug, of course.)
I’m thinking of adding a bigger, solid low pile rug to go under the print rug. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I have a beautiful rug that I want to use for our living room when we move but I am pretty certain it will be slightly too small for the space. How do you feel about layering rugs? It is a beautiful patterned wool rug so I thought maybe a more neutral jute underneath it? And also what about using rugs on carpeted floors?

the room I’m working with is 15’6" x 12’x9". I feel like that’s in between the small space and large space. If you want to make sure the rug doesn’t cover up the floor, are you thinking leaving 1-2 feet between the edge of the rug and the walls?

I will never understand rugs in the kitchen. Frying pan splatter, drops of water and the occasional dropped pork chop make rugs in the kitchen unsanitary. I like to make my house pretty but it has to serve my lifestyle.

I cook. Three times a day almost every day. If you order all your food in already prepared go ahead, but if you make bread, fry bacon or cook spaghetti sauce, NO! DON’T DO IT!

Living room rugs are problematic for those of us who eat in front of the television. Sad to say I am one of those people. And I’m not always a tidy eater either. Buttered popcorn is hell on rugs. Vinaigrette thatvfrll off your salad on the way tonyour face is tough too. You can vacuum and shampoo rugs but get grease on it and you are in permanent spot territory. After a couple of years the rug looks like it has acne. So when choosing rugs for living rooms take some advice from someone who has replaced a few. Get something that will disguise small spots that will not come clean. Never wear outdoor shoes on the rug. Become a vacuuming as fanatic and invest in a shampooer. I am looking for a rug right now knowing that in three or four years it is going away for good but I have doubts. I know right now that will have a spot just where I sit every day in front of the T.V which is only cleanableable with a nuclear bomb. The pile will be flat and dirty where my immaculate feet rest. There will be a clearly worn path from the kitchen to the couch. Even the wool rugs I spent a fortune on couldn’t stand up to constant use. They looked far better than the synthetic fiber rugs but I had an infeststion of carpet beetles that even frantic vacuuming didn’t deter. They left a few small holes before I discovered them and went on a crusade to murder every last one. But the damage was done. Currently my floors are bare. Inelegant to be sure. The place echoes a tiny bit which is very annoying. But my walker rolls smoothly over the bare floors, they are easy to keep clean and spills and mayonnaise are easy to mop up.. I’ ,looking, but I don’t know if I am going to lay out a bundle of money during this inflation when everything is in short supply for a disposable rug and a hand knotted, wool rug, though gorgeous, is not affordable right now. I am getting used to bare floors until prices come down or my income goes up. The latter is highly unlikely.

  33. Sarah Batchelder on May 28, 2023 at 1:46 pm

Ok y’all did this man just show a 5k rug and label it as a "investment" ?! A rug is not a technical investment especially one that expensive it is truly a waste of your money. There are so many amazing durable stylish rugs for under 500$ now that spending that type of money on a rug is just foolish. I’m speaking as a financial advisor so please this isn’t a stock this isn’t something that is going to gain equity so please steer clear even if you "have the money".

Hi Nick! I’m thinking about buying a rug for my living room but I don’t know if it should also fit under the furniture I have in front of my sofa (aside from my coffee table). So should it fit under or should it stop right in front of the furniture. Thanks!

Nick, what do I do in my dining room? I have a larger dining room set (cherry hand me down from grandma-means a lot to us so gonna keep). We have it seating 6(large family), but there is a leaf that we don’t use. Anyway, rules advise to use 8×10 or 9×12 area rug underneath. Problem is that my room is only 11×11. The rug only leaves a few inches of space on the two sides. Walkway side ha about 16inches on each side. Do I keep the 8×10, or size down a bit? 5×7 was too small.

Also, my living room is having same issue. I had 8×10 with my sectional placed with front legs. Kids kept knocking the couch back into the window and curtains, so I purchased 10×10 to place entire sectional on it. Now it is not centered and leaves a lot of floor space in between the fireplace and is bothering me. Looks as if I need to put front legs only on it again. Thoughts?!??

I work at a natural flooring retailer and jute is absolutely not ideal for entry ways. it is not durable and actually the only natural material we dont recommend for high traffic areas. for entry ways you want something like coir. Places where mud gets tracked in Seagrass flooring is also decent as you can brush the mud off once it dries. Jute and sisal will ruin with any kind of moisture,

In living spaces with moderate foot traffic sisal and seagrass are best, in places with low foot traffic you could have jute but honestly, we hardly ever recommend jute due to it being so easy to ruin.

I have noticed that lots and lots of people who should be more aware (like designers or some of these youtube influences) seem to reccomend jute as something to go where there is high foot traffic and its simply wrong. If you want natural for high foot traffic go for sisal and seagrass.

  40. BreakingBoxes on May 28, 2023 at 1:57 pm

jute looks really hard and uncomfortable to stand on w/out shoes?

  42. bp996959 on May 28, 2023 at 2:00 pm

stay away from viscose blend rugs,, they are very problematic ie wont hold up and esp diff and expensive to clean because of the wood like fibers in viscose that dont like to get wet..

Nick, I follow you and love your thoughts on design but you didn’t talk about bringing cohesiveness from one rug to another. I have a transitional type living room (with some antiques) plus a foyer and another area in it with a French oak sideboard and I already have the gorgeous olive green sofa with gold highlights I must work around. Tried using the same rug in two sizes and sure didn’t like that matchy matchy look..sigh, how do I pull it together then tie in the other rooms? That’s another video!

  48. Yun A on May 28, 2023 at 2:04 pm

Hello there, I have a yellow toned hard wool floor in my room, black bedding, some black/brown bookshelf and a light brown night stand, which colors are good for my room?

  49. coloraddiction on May 28, 2023 at 2:04 pm

Random question, has anybody else felt that a certain color keeps following them, and they keep thinking its okay and then hating it? For me it was the burgundy rug of my childhood, all the way to the wine and burgundy of kitchens that sent me rushing to replace all my accessories with matte black. In my previous kitchen there were sort of redwood looking cabinets so the burgundy matched, but once we left that space, after a while, it felt like those colors were haunting me and I had to change them. I don’t know, just a random thing 🤷‍♀️
